Story

Rajanna story is set in 1950 in Nelakondapalli village in Adilabad district and revolves around Mallamma (Annie), an orphan girl who is taken care by an old man. Mallamma has a natural gift of singing but she is opposed by the Village Dorasani (Shwetha Menon). The young girl couldn’t stop singing and so, the dorasani kills the old man and with the help of music teacher (Nasser), Mallamma however escapes from the place and heads to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru to inform about the village’s difficulties to get freedom from the Nizam ruling. The Dorasani and her men set to Delhi and locks her and the music teacher in a room. When Mallamma looses all hope, her teacher reveals about her father Rajanna, revolutionary leader who struggled for the people of Nelakondapalli .

Performances

The entire first half runs mainly on the character essayed by child artiste Annie and she has delivered a wonderful performance. The young girl in the role of Mallamma has given a controlled and power-packed performance. Annie has stealed the show and is sure to bag many awards for the film.

Nagarjuna is terrific as Rajanna and he has delivered one of the finest and refined performances. His expressions and mannerism in Veyyi Veyyi song are unmatchable. Kudos to Nagarajuna for taking up such character that has much importance to young girl and stays true to the script.

Sneha as Lachamma is perfect, Swetha Menon as evil lady is apt. Nasser and Sammaeta Gandhi are good. Others like Pradeep Rawat, Supreet, Sravan, Ajay, Hema et al are adequate.

Technical Analysis

MM Keeravani’s music is truly an asset for Rajanna. The background score is too good and he lives upto his expectations. Gijjigadu, Veyyi Veyyi are the best on-screen. Cinematography by Shyam K Naidu and Anil Bhandari are on top notch. Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao’s editing is flawless. Ravinder’s art work is perfect reminding the Nizam era with village sets. Visual effects are tacky. Vijayendra Prasad’s direction and story are laudable but the screenplay is predictable at times. The production values are standard.

Analysis

Raanna’s plot line is interesting and it’s the narration and the actors fine performances that keeps you glued to the big-screens. The film offers loads emotional and patriotic scenes. Nag enters the screens 10 mins before the interval and the post interval scenes are an exciting watch. Rajamouli’s mark style is visible in action episodes and in songs and it’s just a treat to watch. Vijayendra Prasad’s script is good but the screenplay could have been tighter since it’s predictable. Keeravani’s music is the soul of the film he has elevated the film at many place with his re-recording.

Films like Rajanna are made rarely which are based on the history and revolutionary struggles for freedom. Rajanna has a heart drenching story and is an emotional galore. Rajanna is one of the good movies in the recent times.

Final Verdict

Nagarjuna and Annie’s performances, Keeravani’s music, Rajamouli’s action episodes, Vijayendrs Prasad’s story and the team’s sincere efforts make Rajanna a good watch.
