Masthi Review

In one single film the scores of human bodies sliced like vegetables is not an achievement for the director like Shivamani and producer of reputation Ramu. It is disgusting to see Upendra holding the long sharp edge weapons. His new hairstyle is also awful. In the name of rowdy 'Masthi' only at a few places director Shivamani touches the heart. In most of the cases he pierces in to the mind and heart and disturbs your nerves.

In the remote village the siblings Rachappa (Shashikumar) and Siddappa (Upendra) born to the family of folk singers decide to bring down the pressure of work for their father. Rachappa comes to city and gets a good job. He earns the confidence of the people and works for the innocent. He is not liked by a group of disgruntled persons. On the day of felicitation to Rachappa and festival day the rowdy gang bounces on Rachappa and kill him in front of his family. Innocent Siddappa becomes very furious and he takes courage to put down a few persons in the opponent gang cutting one of the legs of key person. Siddappa is arrested and here in the prison he is called as 'Masthi' because he looks like rowdy of Srirampuram in Bangalore. From here the anti social activities inevitably becomes the part and parcel of the life of Masthi. Masthi is the wanted man in the opponent gang. He is also eagerly wanted by the lady love Bhoomika (Jennifer Kotwal). Against all odds she is ready to marry Masthi. Life is not cool like others in the society for Masthi yet Bhoomika is hell bent. She even dresses like widow in the presence of Masthi to prove how deeply she is in love with him. Masthi gives up his weapon and horrible work for the sake of Bhoomika. But the opponent gang is thirsty to demolish the underworld empire of Masthi. Bhoomika is murdered in this fight to finish. At the time of cremation of Bhoomika the hell breaks out in the graveyard. Masthi losing everyone becomes mentally. He is sent to mental asylum.

The reckless and ruthless attitude of director Shivamani has gone beyond limits. In the temples, serene places, roads, public places and the protagonist in Ayyappa costume you find the long sharp weapons doing its duty.

Why did Upendra pick this type of role? He should know first that the opening for the film is not enough. This type of action film is short lived in the minds of people. The film should run for a long. With bizarre of action scenes he fails to bring the family audience to the theatres. Jennifer Kotwal has done well. In the dance and emotion sequences she is very capable. Ramesh Bhat, Shashikumar, Umasri, Satyajith, Kishore and Pavithra Lokesh are apt for the roles.

No good tunes from Gurukiran. He picks the tunes shamelessly from already family songs in Kannada. Nothing is memorable after you come out from the theatre watching this film. Giri has done a great job in the camera department.

Underworld film of this type is a bane to the society.
