'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge' started it all as the acronym DDLJ became synonym for the movie. Yes, there was HAHK [Hum Aapke Hain Kaun] too before that but people still preferred to call it by the full title.
This was followed by KKHH [Kuch Kuch Hota Hai] but using acronyms really became fashionable with RHTDM [Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein] and K3G [Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham] where the makers intentionally chose to publicize the film by their short forms. Since then there has been no looking back as one after another the use of acronyms became a norm, most recently being that of the biggest film of the year 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' that is known more as KANK.
But the cake is now taken by the sequel to 'Dhoom'! When everyone thought that the movie would be titled 'Dhoom -II', Yash Raj Films have kept it simple by simply calling the film 'D2'. On the lines of Hollywood blockbusters 'MI -I' and 'MI - II' that are known more by their short forms than 'Mission Impossible Part I and II', the makers of Dhoom too have kept it simple, hence paving the way for many more sequels to come.
Did we hear D3 and D4 knocking the doors?
