Shutter Review

Shutter which got rave reviews in the popular film section in IFFK, should be appreciated for a good script, which throws many suspense elements at regular intervals, some well defined twists, a perfect execution by Joy Mathew, and some appreciable performances will force the audience to be glued to the proceedings.

Shutter tells the story of a Gulf Malayali Rasheed (Lal), how his life changes or how his belief changes in two days under a difficult situation forms the core of the story. Rasheed decided to engage his daughter Nila (Riya Saira), sighting her so deep friendships with her male friends. And also decided to start a business in his one of the shop room, which is not yet rented. Incidentally that room happens to be his and friends’ regular party place.

However he fell for a sex worker named Thankam (Sajitha Madathil), in his friend Nanmyil Sura’s (Vinay Fort) autoriksha. And they take her to that Rasheed’s empty room. After locking them inside Suran went for getting some food. However he along with his traveler Manoharan(Sreenivasan), a film maker who dreams to make it big in the film industry, arrested for drunk driving that makes Rasheed with Thankam locked inside the Shutter. There Rasheed realizes the real value of the life, and he slowly understands that his beliefs may not be correct. And he happens to understand them through the life outside that shutter.

The script from Joy Mathew is perfect while it details each character and executes some fine twists. Same time satirically questions many issues in our social life. Cinematography by Hari Nair able to get some nice shots. Background score by Ranganath Ravi was really suiting the mood.

Coming to the acting Sajitha Madathil’s performance as the sex work deserves its reorganization in the State Award as the second best actress. As a sex worker she has seen more life and people, and her observations at right places are expressed with ease. After ‘Prabhuvinte Makkal’, after ‘Theevram’ Vinay Fort once again comes up with a perfect job as the auto driver. Sreenivasan too excels in his job same goes for Lal as Rasheed. The casting of Shutter should be appreciated, that all leaves a mark. And everyone has a real role to play in the proceedings.
