First weekend performance of latest release Two distinct films released last Friday - SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM and PROVOKED. While SLBB looked safe due to its multistarrer appeal, popular music and good vibes that the film's subject was generating, PROVOKED was always meant to be a dicey preposition due to its dark theme and minimal publicity. Nonetheless, both the films failed to create any major impact at the box office as neither SLBB nor PROVOKED opened to a heartening response. While poor beginning to PROVOKED was as expected (it is a kind of film that would have worked mainly on word of mouth), the response to SLBB was disappointing to say the least. SLBB was always expected to open in the middle range and then hope for better days ahead based on its merits. Hence a lukewarm opening was disappointing but not threatening since it was expected that the film would pull through by the time the first weekend was through. Sadly none of that happened as the film met with such horrific critic response that revival from that point on looked very difficult. Coming to the merits of the film, it actually does boast of a good storyline but surprisingly 90% of the media was unanimous in calling it a dud. Call it a joint call or just a coincidence but the fact remains that SLBB has opened to the worst reviews this year, followed closely by only DELHII HEIGHTS, the film which released a week earlier. It is sad to see that the good effort put by both Bobby Deol and Upen Patel is not being seen by many and if the film's trending doesn't move towards stability soon, it would turn out to be a loosing venture for everyone involved. Last week's movies Jimmy Sheirgill, Sarwar Ahuja and Sanjay Suri, the lead actors of DELHII HEIGHTS, KHANNA & IYER and SAY SALAAM INDIA would certainly want to forget if these films ever happened to them. The biggest disasters ever of their career [except for debutant Sarwar who would be hoping that this was just a bad dream], each of the lead actors have a BIG flop to their name now. The saddening part is that none of them is to be actually blamed for the poor response to their films since they did all they could to come up with good/convincing acts. It's the film/promotion that failed them which meant that 2007 had 3 straight losers added on to its tally. While DELHII HEIGHTS failed to even cross 50 lakhs across the country, KHANNA & IYER is a mammoth disaster by just about managing to cross 5 lakhs! Regarding SAY SALAAM INDIA, the less said the better since the film's collections were in few thousands, let alone even touching 1 lakh at a single center! From the past With zero competition challenging its might, NAMASTE LONDON only grew from strength to strength as it went on to add on another 9.5 crore. Now this is just a 40% drop over its first week total of 15.5 crore, something which we predicted last week looking at the trending and a good word of mouth that the film has been generating ever since the first show of the film commenced. Though first week indicated a final total in the range of 30-35 crores, an excellent second week combined with lack of any major competition till the arrival of TA RA RUM PUM on April 27 means that the film has good potential to cross 35 crores. The film is doing exceedingly well up North India as it collected further 1.5 crores in Delhi after an opening of 2 crores. Even in Mumbai, it has been on stable grounds as indicated by its 1.25 crore + second week figure after collecting 2.25 crores in the first week. At 25 crores and still pulling in audience in hordes, the film is now already a semi-hit with a potential to be an all around hit if it maintains the trending as reflected in the second week. Mira Nair's THE NAMESAKE has turned out to be a surprise box office success. Opening to a moderate response, the film recovered well by the time first week came to a close. After collecting 1.25 crores in the first week (decent), the film ended up garnering an even better response in its second week as it showed a jump in collections to bring in another 1.4 crores with its total now exceeding 2.5 crores. The only film which has shown such consistency in the recent past has been VIVAH though the magnitude of collections has been a lot higher. Nevertheless, the success of THE NAMESAKE marks the acceptance of a new kind of cinema which actually cannot be classified into a particular genre. Boasting of superb performances from Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Kal Penn, the film also comes as a shot in the arm for UTV which didn't have a particularly good start to the New Year with the poor response to HAT TRICK. With films failing around it left, right and center, VIVAH marches on towards the silver jubilee mark as it collects 15 lakhs, exactly the same amount as in last week, in its 21st week. Coming back into the Top-5 charts, the film's marketing, release strategy and product placement deserve to be considered for a case study across management institutes. The film is still running at over 50 cinemas with its total inching towards 32 crores. In the future An action/drama, romantic/drama and a comic/drama makes for the offering that Bollywood has for the viewers coming Friday. The films we are talking about are BIG BROTHER, LIFE MEIN KABHIE KABHIIE and BHEJA FRY. There is some uncertainty over the proper release of BIG BROTHER across good chain of theaters and it may eventually arrive only on single screens. Long in the making and with not much promotion for the film except for the television promos, BIG BROTHER has its chances mainly up North. LMKK is a Vikram Bhatt film and since he has a series of box office disappointments behind him, the film seems to be facing a hushed up release with not much promotion backing it up. There are not many expectations of an opening from this youth multistarrer. Third release of the week is BHEJA FRY and though the film comes with just 2 weeks promotion behind it, an attractive title followed by an impressive ensemble starcast may make this whacky film the first choice of moviegoers at least in city multiplexes [its target audience]
After OCEANS 12, get set to meet SOAL 13
When released, OCEANS 11 and OCEANS 12 made history. It won't be wrong to say that the franchise only gave impetus to the trend of making ensemble cast movies. Over here in Bollywood, things are only becoming bigger and better with actors throwing their dreams of a solo starrer out of the window and agreeing to be a part of a film boasting of an ensemble cast and setting. SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA is an example of one such film. The film takes a step ahead by releasing before OCEANS 13 while boasting of a cast comprising of as many as 13 actors. Led by veterans Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Suneil Shetty, the film stars hot-n-happening Abhishek Bachchan along with young blood in the form of Vivek Oberoi and Tusshar Kapoor. This is not all as the film also stars Arbaaz Khan, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Rohit Roy and Aditya Lakhia in pivotal roles along with ladies Dia Mirza, Aarti Chhabria and Neha Dhupia who complete 13 important characters of the film. Will there be another film with 14 cast members soon?
Box office analysis-October 12 , 2007
First weekend performance of latest release Every year, there is one week like this when 2/3/4 films release on the same day and all turn out to be box office disasters of equal proportions. In fact it is hard to figure out which of these films is a bigger trade disappointment than the other since the collections all over at all centers and each show are near to negligible. The weekend gone by saw history repeating itself as each of the four films - GO, CHODDON NAA YAAR, ITS BREAKING NEWS and 50 LAKH saw literally empty theaters on the first day itself. The writing was clear on the wall - audience was in no mood to even give a chance to any of these four films that had nothing going in their favor. GO came very near to Ram Gopal Varma's AAG and as expected, it was a field day for those who had seen the film as well as those (which formed majority) to rip it apart even if that meant doing so without any rhyme or reason. This Gautam Kumar debut film was definitely not bad but when the tide is so strong against a film maker and the pre-release buzz is all negative, there is nothing that can save a product. Add to it a predominantly new cast and crew and the battle is further lost. CHODDON NAA YAAR was a strange film in itself and hence there was no surprise when audience gave it a cold shoulder without even giving it a dekko. Also, those who saw it hardly had a good word to say about this mumbo-jumbo of horror meets KAAL meets adventure meets some mish-mash which just didn't make any sense in entirety. In the end, a no-show for Jimmy Sheirgill who can only take solace from the fact that he, as always, got decent to good reviews for his work. IT'S BREAKING NEWS and 50 LAKH were so dry before their release that sheer unawareness amongst the audience about the films hardly came as a surprise. Result? Empty theaters all around for the two films which won't even get into a second week running. Last week's movies DIL DOSTI ETC. has turned out to be a surprise earner at the box office. It's first week collections have been 1.5 crores which is good enough to make this small budget film reach the safety mark. Debutant director Manish Tiwary's realistic film laded with humor found an audience amongst youngsters and found stable footfalls throughout it's first week. While Mumbai had 40 lakhs to show, Delhi was decent too at 20 lakhs. Delhi NCR further contributed with another 20 lakhs odd hence making it a good success up North. Released at selective number of prints and carried forward at a good number into the second week, the film has made it's mark in spite of close to dozen releases in the month of September. At 3 crores, JOHNNY GADDAAR is on a sticky ground as of now. Though the number is hardly flattering, some very good appreciation from audience as well as critics raises some hopes of a decent second week. As expected, the film saw maximum collections from Mumbai (80 lakhs) with Delhi at 33 lakhs. Low cost of the film would ensure that the film covers it's costs at the least but the sad part is that this Sriram Raghavan directed caper hasn't got it's box office due. Even if word of mouth sustains it in the second week, the BHOOL BHULAIYAA and LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG onslaught at majority of multiplex screens would force JOHNNY GADDAAR an early retirement. From the past Two weeks back it didn't quite seem that DHOL would follow the MALAMAAL WEEKLY route. Well, at least the first couple of weeks have indeed followed a journey in this direction. Just like Priyadarshan's earlier comedy, even DHOL has seen a reasonably good second week with only 45% fall. Earning 5.5 crores more, the film has now crossed 15 crore mark hence becoming a semi-hit right away. The film has done quite well in centers like Mumbai and Delhi where it has netted 80 lakhs each more in the second week. One more good week like this and DHOL could well gain a higher status. MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER is a huge disaster with collections falling by close to 90%. With mere 30 lakhs in the first week, one can easily see the kind of billing film would have after two weeks. Extremely disappointing to see some good act going completely unnoticed. In the meanwhile DHAMAAL continues to create some rock solid 'dhamaal'. The film can finally wear the HIT tag for itself as this Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Javed Jaffry and Ashish Chaudhary film has sustained excellently in it's 4th week to see a negligible fall (less than 10%) from it's third week. An added 3 crores in the collections means that the film has now crossed the 28 crore mark and would comfortably cross the 30 crores milestone. From 70 lakhs last week, Mumbai has barely dropped, as indicated by 65 lakhs in last week whereas Delhi has in fact jumped from 30 lakhs to 35 lakhs. A clear cut HIT now, it is a second successive success for Riteish after HEYY BABYY. Even for Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi, it is third big money spinner after the twin success of Munnabhai. HEYY BA BYY is now in it's last leg and may sustain only for around a fortnight more. With close to 50% fall and only 40 lakhs more coming in, HEYY BABYY has crossed 51 crores but it unlikely to reach the 52 crores mark. CHAK DE INDIA is turning out to be the VIVAH of 2007, though on a higher side! While VIVAH was busy collecting in lakhs on a consistent note once it went past the first 4-5 weeks, CHAK DE INDIA has taken the crores route. In it's 8th week, the film has done phenomenally well to actually show a jump in collections and netted another 2 crores. The film stands neck to neck with year's biggest money spinner, PARTNER, at 62 crores but would cross it easily this week. In the future While this week's BHOOL BHULAIYAA is a T-Series film, LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG has Yash Raj Films backing. As are the indications BHOOL BHULAIYAA is going to be a clear winner as far as the opening weekend goes. Superhit music, presence of mighty Akshay Kumar, presence of Priyadarshan (who can even make a DHOL a blockbuster), a successful theme (the film has been made in numerous South Indian languages and has been a success every time) and a complete family film appeal are just a few reasons which might make BHOOL BHULAIYAA as the first choice of cine goers. On the other hand LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAGA has been pretty 'thanda' ever since its promotion began. Presence of actors like Rani Mukherjee and Abhishek Bachchan is a little too predictable when it comes to a Yash Raj Film, the music has not caught up at all in spite of being pleasant, the buzz is clearly missing while the film's theme sounds serious. The film should pick up and that too purely on the basis of word of mouth once the BHOOL BHULAIYAA wave settles down.
Shilpa's 12 lakh perfume tops ruby necklace/Cartier watch
Shilpa Shetty's recently launched perfume S2 raised an amazing 15,000 Pounds Sterling (more than Rs. 12 lakh) for charity, at a special auction held in the UK last week. The proceeds from the event will be going to 'Anamika'; a charity organization for underprivileged children in India. Fashion tycoon Danni Passi purchased the fragrance in the auction, while Shilpa attended the event to lend her support to the cause. It can be noted here that the 15,000 pounds bid by Passi, surpassed the 9,000 pounds mark raised by Shilpa at British MP Keith Vaz's charity event last June. Shilpa's publicist Dale Bhagwagar said, "She is thrilled that her perfume has managed to raise this amount for charity. What's remarkable is that the sum raised from auctioning the S2 perfume topped other auction items, including a diamond and ruby necklace and a Cartier watch." The proceeds will be used towards restoring to underprivileged Indian children, their basic rights to survival, protection and development. Meanwhile, Shilpa's musical 'Miss Bollywood' continues to enthrall audiences across Europe. After its stupendous success in Germany, the actress is currently performing shows in various cities of UK almost on a daily basis. "Her recent shows in Manchester have got her a standing ovation, an overwhelming applause and loads of critical acclaim. So much so, that the organizers are planning to squeeze in two extra shows in UK for this week," said Bhagwagar.

First weekend performance of latest release As of today, there is no clear verdict on the box office performance of SARKAR RAJ. The trade is keeping it's fingers crossed to classify the status of SARKAR RAJ before the first week comes to an end. And all of this is happening courtesy the film's big release. Though one expected a 70%-80% beginning for the movie, it was mainly because films belonging to the genre of SARKAR RAJ usually open at around 500-600 prints. However, the point to be noted is that contrary to what was widely anticipated, the film wasn't given a mid-size release but instead opened on a huge print count (~800). This means that the occupancy level was bound to be on the middle side since multiplexes with a house full indication (where 12-14-16 shows are running) would have been a little too much to ask. Reason being that SARKAR RAJ has a kind of subject which would certainly enthuse people to venture into theaters but not the way a RACE or a JANNAT did (both of which also boasted of chartbuster music). On the other hand an advantage of a huge release meant that even a 50% opening (which obviously increased to 70-80% over the weekend) ensured that a recovery is certainly on the cards. Now due to average to good word of mouth (no one is calling it a bad film though the words 'must watch' are missing), the film is safe but it would be some sustaining power over the weekdays that would decide the fate in the long run for SARKAR RAJ. If the film enjoys a healthy second weekend (something where competition does come in handy because of MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP carrying good reports), this Ram Gopal Varma film may manage to approach the HIT status. But again, it is a wait and watch situation! What is definitely working in the favor of AAMIR is VERY POSITIVE word of mouth. And this is surprising since it is coming from not just those people who have watched the film but even those who haven't (a rarity)! How is that possible? Well, it is the 'There is this movie called AAMIR and it is getting a good response. Have you heard about it?' factor! The film has been appreciated on all counts and it would be criminal if exhibitors choose to ignore it in weeks to come. It's my personal request to the multiplex-vallahs - 'Please Please Please give it a chance for at least another fortnight. I promise it will catch on for sure!' What happens to HUMSEY HAI JAHAAN - the third release of the week? Well, fate of a film is known after very first show when let aside the 'aam junta', even critics give it a cold shoulder and don't even bother reviewing it. Get the picture? Well, it is going to be one of the Top-5 lowest first week openers of the year gone by! Last week's movies In the week gone by, two major films had released - HASTEY HASTEY and WOODSTOCK VILLA. Well, status is as follow: HASTEY HASTEY is a disaster while WOODSTOCK VILLA is a flop! Jimmy Sheirgill may be showing complete conviction to the best and the worst directors of the world but his films haven't been so kind to him in the past few months. HASTEY HASTEY has added on the list of his disasters but that may not really be bothering the young actor much who is fast getting rid of his backlog. The film managed to earn a mere 75 lakhs and this is where the buck would stop. Call of the situation? Jimmy Sheirgill should now be doing only those projects which are big banners; even if that means that he is required to be a part of multi hero brigade! Let's talk about WOODSTOCK VILLA now. There were newsbytes around how Sikandar Kher's entry alone had cost 1.5 crores for the film's producers. Well, if that's indeed true then the film should turn out to be a big flop since the first week collections read a mere 2 crores adds, just 50 lakhs more than what a single scene in the film had cost the makers. Neither Mumbai (35 lakhs) nor Delhi (25 lakhs) were impressive at all and the second week should witness heavy fall in collections too. However, the good news is that Sikandar has come in for appreciation which means that Bollywood (thankfully) gets a rugged hero in the mould of Sanjay Dutt. From the past While films have been failing left, right and center, JANNAT has been standing tall with more than 4.5 crores coming in the third week. This means that JANNAT has now made 30 crores in 3 weeks flat and is still counting. The film collected 50 lakhs each from Mumbai as well as Delhi. What is heartening though is that Emraan's fan base and Pritam's chartbuster music is ensuring steady collections from smaller centers as well which is contributing to very good total even in the third week for the film. Single handedly Emraan Hashmi has managed to knock off the combined strength of Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. So much so that after 3 weeks of it's release, it is quite obvious that the box office performance of JANNAT would outshine that of TASHAN which is now living it's dying moments. While TASHAN has made close to 31 crores in 5 weeks and is now breathing it's last at the box office (it's VCDs are already out on stands at a dirt cheap price while the DVDs are expected to follow soon too), JANNAT is all set to outshine it. With the kind of graph that this Mukesh Bhatt production is showing, gathering 2 crores in next couple of weeks is pretty much on the cards and the long term trending indicates that TASHAN's final total would be certainly left behind by JANNAT. BHOOTHNATH is continuing to do well in the middle range and takes only 55% fall in spite of number of releases after it's arrival. The film is still dealing in crores and netted another 1.25 crores + in it's 4th week. At 25 crores, it is an above average success and the highest collector for an Amitabh Bachchan solo in the recent times. In the future Four films release this weekend - MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP, SUMMER 2007, DASHAVATAR and ZINDAGI TERE NAAM. While ZINDAGI TERE NAAM isn't even getting a respectable release and isn't expected to run beyond it's first weekend, it would be difficult for animation film DASHAVATAR also to find any takers. SUMMER 2007 looks interesting but would surely be marred by bad release and publicity while the only silver lining of the week is going to be MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP. Expect an opening on the middle range to grow quite well over the weekend for this Priyadarshan-Akshaye film which is all set to be a box office success.
