Percept Picture Company has 16 Kids

Don't be amazed. Percept Picture Company became popular with Children's cinema with tow major hits in two years. They have delivered a motion picture Makdee that became very popular with both kids and adults. They ventured into animation films for the first time in India and the attempt was the most unexpected success of the year 2005- Hanuman. The unprecedented success in Children's cinema has encouraged them to come up with a yet another motion picture once again for children titled 16 Kids. The film is sure to have more than 16 kids playing various characters in the film. It is expected to tap the market for Children's cinema that has gone unnoticed for several years now. There is nothing known about the story or the star cast of the film. All that is known is that the film will hit cinemas across India in October this year. The film is meant to be an entertainer for both kids and adults. Another major project for Percept is Pirates by Priyadarshan.

Box Office Analysis-November 16 , 2006

First weekend performance of latest release Though trade seems to be a trifle surprised while looking at the sustained run of 'Vivah' since the day it has released, readers may remember that we had mentioned in the last week's box office column about the film picking up pace just as the release day came close. The emotional chord seemed to have struck, especially while looking at Sooraj Barjatya's humble interviews all over the satellite channels and it was just the word of mouth catching up about whether the final product was actually worth appreciating. The good part is that the film opened well [70% +] everywhere and has been having a sustained run as the days continue. While majority of films take some kind of fall with Monday's arrival, in the case of Vivah the collections are sustained which means the family crowds are patronising it and hence the film is being seen even on weekdays. The film is on its way to become a comfortable hit, what with the number of prints being increased in the coming week. Though the collections may not sound enormous when compared to the kind of crores that are being generated for all biggies these days, what needs to be kept in mind is that only 100-150 prints of the film have been released and that translates into a very healthy print average. An open week ahead would only help the cause. 'Apna Sapna Money Money' was always considered to be a good enough film to challenge 'Vivah.' Though there was no clash per se due to different genres of the films and print numbers being different, what cannot be negated is that ASMM too opened quite well, especially in Mumbai and has seen decent revenue coming in the susbsequent days. This medium budget film has enough laughs to keep its investors happy and make them laugh all the way to the bank. Yet another comedy has struck gold this year and should ensure the recovery within a week's time. Good run of a week or two more and the film could be called a comfortable success. Ritesh Deshmukh gets a 10/10 for his performance while Chunky Pandey gets his meatiest role ever since 'Aankhen.' It is good to see the actor make an impressive comic comeback as a Nepali-Pathani don. Sangeeth Sivan too has negated all the criticism for both 'Kya Kool Hain Hum' and ASMM and has enjoyed the last laugh. 'Deadline' was the least talked about film on its release and it continues to be so till date. Though the film has been given more or less a thumbs up by the critics, it hasn't really found the kind of audience it truly deserves. The film has some powerful performances by its lead cast and if it had been better promoted and had arrived with lesser competition, it could have done much better. Still, due to negligible competition coming Friday, the thriller should hope for a good word of mouth publicity for better results. Last week's movies While doomsday seemed in sight many days before the release of 'Umrao Jaan' itself, the opening day was nothing but a shocker. With near empty houses all around, it was a horrifying sight for this JP Dutta magnum opus. Any hopes of a turnaround were negated by the fact that word of mouth wasn't anything great, which further spoiled whatever chances the film had. The person who would be most impacted by the film's disastrous response would be Aishwarya Rai since she is the central protagonist in the film. Though she has delivered one of her best performances ever, the fact remains that her film didn't pull in much audience, thus putting a question mark over her standing in top bracket of Bollywood heroines. A six crore opening week was hardly a pleasant sight, especially when even a 'Tom Dick and Harry' earned as much in its first week. The only place where Umrao Jaan managed to touch 1 crore was Mumbai while in Delhi it earned 60 lakhs. In fact Delhi NCR [Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kaushambi, Faridabad] contributed as much as 50 lakhs. From the past Even with 'Umrao Jaan' and to a little extent 'Jaan-E-Mann' as the competition, 'Don' held quite decently in its 3rd week and took an expected 50% fall. With another 6.5 crore week, the film closed pretty much close to 45 crore, hence bringing it en route to the superhit mark. The film had another 1 crore week in Mumbai though in Delhi it was shockingly low at just about 50 lakhs. Nevertheless, cynics may choose to ignore the film's success but the fact is that it has overall done extremely well in each and every territory. Shahrukh Khan's gamble for doing something different has paid off well while Farhan Akhtar written climax is the factor that is bringing in the repeat audience. It was a case of losing breath with repeated hurdles and this is what happened to 'Jaan-E-Mann' as it finally lost out on steam by taking a 60% fall in it's 3rd week. With just another 3 crore coming in, the film is a flop as it stands at 25 crore. Ironical though, since a 25 crore total means that there were thousands of people who actually saw the film but the high cost at which the film was sold and the solid competition it faced from 'Don' meant that the film couldn't enjoy a box office success. A sad state of affair since the actors did their job well- Salman was appreciated by one and all, Akshay reinvented himself with a refined act and Shirish Kunder proved that he was a director to reckon with. But nutshell? Commmerically speaking - a flop! 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' completed 10 weeks at the box office and brought home another 50 lakhs to take the total in excess of 69 crore. Though it will be a stretch, the film should eventually reach 70 crores in a few weeks time. In the future Three stuck-in-the-cans films 'Unns,' 'Rehguzar' and 'Janani,' release this Friday. Apart from suffering from poor promotion, the films also have uncommon titles and zero buzz which makes it highly improbable for them to survive for more than a week, especially with 'Vivah' and ASMM doing well and 'Dhoom 2' coming in a week later.

Box office analysis-August 16 , 2007

First weekend performance of latest release: All talks revolved around CHAK DE INDIA in the weekend gone by. And no, for a change (thankfully), there weren't mixed reports that were making the rounds around the town. No one stood up and said that 'maza nahi aaya'! In fact it was heartening to see that both industry as well as audience was unanimous in hailing it as a landmark film for everyone involved. And no, it wasn't just a case of only critics giving it a 4 star rating and audience appreciating it just for an 'effort'. Instead the film has proved to be a wholesome massy entertainer with even commoners accepting it wholeheartedly with feedback ranging from very good to excellent. The film opened to a positive note and by the time Friday dawned, the word of mouth had spread like a wild fire. As the nation woke up on Saturday morning, the SMSs and calls were the order of the day as everyone acknowledged the fact that Shimit Amin and Jaideep Sahni had done which other film makers had mainly tried in the past when it came to making a film for the house of Yash Raj Films. They ensured that a film was made which stayed rooted to it's theme without being trapped in the world of glitz and glamour. A win for Shimit, Jaideep and of course Shahrukh Khan without whom CHAK DE INDIA wouldn't have been what it is today, the film has proved to be a surprise of the season and is poised to be a big hit in the coming weeks. The kind of product KAAFILA is, it wouldn't have met with a different fate even if it came as a sole release of the month, let aside a week. A film that came with a unique theme, it was hampered by substandard execution which proved to be it's undoing. The film's USP, Sunny Deol, was conspicuous by his lack of prominent presence in the film's publicity while his late entry in the film too didn't quite amuse his fans. The result was that a) film took a poor opening and b) it is garnering bad word of mouth that doesn't promise a rosy picture for the film's prospects. While CHAK DE INDIA was talked about for it's high quality and KAAFILA for the lack of it, THE BLUE UMBRELLA wasn't talked about at all. Now this is a scenario of the worst kind since it means that a) audience hadn't even heard about it's release and b) they were just not interested in giving it a dekko. Result? A near to negligible opening for this Vishal Bhardwaj film that could see it coming on home video sooner than expected. Last week's movies: When CASH opened last Friday, many talked about the film as being disaster of the year. It was always a good idea to at least wait for the film's first week and as things stand today, a 17 crore first week total isn't what disasters are made of. While Mumbai saw an excess of 2.5 crores coming in, Delhi was good too at 1.5 crores + with NCR bringing in another 75 lakhs. A high print count coupled with a good opening weekend has ensured that the film scrapes through to being coverage at the least. Sadly, at the moment it seems that 'coverage' is the box office status with which it would have to content itself since CHAK DE INDIA has opened to a tremendous response with all other movies in the running getting impacted in the big way. Anubhav Sinha should now quickly move to his next venture and forget the CASH making experience as a bad dream! Miracle, and only a miracle can save GANDHI MY FATHER from being a box office failure that it may turn out eventually. Opening to a poor response and garnering more of appreciation than good box office prospects, this Anil Kapoor production has just not picked up at the box office. In spite of very good performances, the film's collections were only in the tune of 2.25 crores with Mumbai being foremost at 75 lakhs. Delhi came second with 30 lakhs but that's about it. Even in the second week, there aren't many who are patronizing the film which means that the film would be remembered for it's class but would now have to search for an audience in the home video circuits. Releasing in a 'naya daur', i.e. 21st century, NAYA DAUR failed to entice audience to the theaters and couldn't even touch the 1 crore mark. At 90 lakhs and a slashed print count in it's second week, NAYA DAUR couldn't come remotely close to the kind of box office performance that MUGHAL E AZAM boasted of when re-released two years back. An unexciting promotion is the biggest reason for the film hardly creating a buzz. Also, the film hardly had a grandeur appeal which could have excited the audience to visit this film coming from the 50s. From the past: In spite of being in the running for third week and CASH proving to be a competition, PARTNER boasted of another 7 crores coming in. When compared to the week gone by, it may appear to be a 60% fall but if one looks at yet another great week bringing in the kind of collections that number of films bring in their first week, PARTNER is nothing short of a blockbuster already. While Mumbai enjoyed yet another 1 crore + week, Delhi had 65 lakhs to boast with NCR bringing in 25 lakhs more. At 55 crores and all set to cross the 60 crore mark, PARTNER would go down as one of those films that arrive as a hurricane, make a big mark, create a sensation all over and register themselves firmly in the history books. PARTNER would go down as a surprise blockbuster of the decade so far! The only other film that managed to record some good collections amidst all the competition in the week gone by was APNE. The film has been doing quite steady business even in it's 6th week with 30 lakhs more added to it's total. At 27 crores, the film is now looking at ending it's theatrical run. Still, for weeks to come the film would be seen by audience all over as it's DVDs have been out on the stands for around a fortnight and have been doing wonderfully well. In the future: On any given day, a Salman Khan film would have created more hype than the one starring Rakhi Sawant. Well, this Friday the trend may just change as BUDDHA MAR GAYA clearly seems to be in a much comfortable state than MARIGOLD. While BUDDHAR MAR GAYA has benefited from it's limited but good publicity of just three weeks, MARIGOLD has suffered due to being in the news for so long that it almost seems like a dated product. As of today, the film is carrying near to negligible buzz with hardly the kind of promotion which befits a Salman Khan starrer. Expect a poor box office start for the film. On the other hand BUDDHA MAR GAYA should open decent as the comedy featuring Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal and Om Puri has managed to attract good eyeballs.

Box office analysis-November 16 , 2007

First weekend performance of latest release Aah, finally the big day arrived. Weeks and weeks of speculations were over when the two biggies OM SHANTI OM and SAAWARIYA were unveiled for the audiences. Three things held good in an expected manner: a) Both the films opened between 80%-100% on Friday, b) Evening shows were affected at few centers due to Diwali celebrations, c) OM SHANTI OM turned out to be an entertaining watch while SAAWARIYA didn't! What wasn't expected though was marked difference in the kind of reviews both the films got. Though everyone believed that OM SHANTI OM would work for the audiences with or without favorable reviews, almost all media forums giving it a Thumbs Up came as a surprise even to it's makers. On the other hand everyone in the town believed that SAAWARIYA would get glowing reviews due to it's artistic flavor but this time around Bhansali missed on that aspect as well. No wonder, the film maker is mighty upset and has declared his angst openly. Coming back to the two films, OM SHANTI OM by no means is a great piece of cinema. Entertaining it certainly is but that's about it and perhaps that was THE sole intent of the makers to provide unabashed entertainment to the paying public. As things stand today, it would be a surprise if it doesn't turn out to be the biggest box office earner of the current year and in the process leaves beside SRK's own CHAK DE INDIA and PARTNER, both of which netted a little over 60 crores. On the other hand SAAWARIYA may barely scrape through though a second week crash is inevitable. SAAWARIYA is getting maximum flak for it's lack of storyline and fake characterization/setting due to which negative reports are piling up in heaps. However, the silver lining for the film is Ranbir Kapoor who may not have made what one terms as a smashing debut but still has made much more than just his presence felt. Last week's movies With all eyes on OM SHANTI OM and SAAWARIYA arriving on 9th November, no film was released last week. From the past JAB WE MET, which had two consecutive good weeks, had to live with lesser number of shows in it's third week due to the arrival of OSO and SAAWARIYA. However, it seems that it may just turn lucky in the fourth week with talks around reduced shows of SAAWARIYA in days to come. This would mean that after OM SHANTI OM, it may be back to JAB WE MET as the second choice for viewers in days to come. The film had a fantabulous second week with the makers increasing the number of shows to cash in on an open week. The film saw a drop of just 20% in spite of a huge number of prints and gathered another 9+ crores. At 21 crores (Mumbai being 1.25 crores from the reported centers, Delhi another 1 crore), the film is a solid hit and the entire industry believes that if not for OSO/SAAWARIYA hurricane which hit multiplexes last week, the numbers for JAB WE MET would have escalated further to give it a superhit status in a fortnight's time. Nevertheless, the bottom line is that Shahid & Kareena have delivered a success together, audience has loved (and not just liked) the film, the film is a money spinner and would be terrific on home video and satellite, Imtiaz Ali is born again after SOCHA NA THA and there are all chances for the film to be revived in weeks to come. NO SMOKING has crashed and how! No one actually seems to be surprised with a 90% box office fall of this Anurag Kashyap directed film which has now joined the league of one of the biggest disasters of recent times. With only 20 lakhs more coming in and collections barely coming close to 2 crores, this misadventure is better off forgotten. In terms of a fall, MUMBAI SALSA did follow an industry standard of 50% but that was hardly a consolation since the first week's collections were miserly to say the least. With barely 17 lakhs more coming in and overall collections just managing to cross 50 lakhs, a decently made MUMBAI SALSA has suffered a disappointing run. Fall for BAL GANESH was also less than 40% but just like MUMBAI SALSA, a very poor first week's run did it in. At 52 lakhs, this animation film is also a trade disaster hence making it 3 in a row for a single week. Meanwhile after a 60% in the previous week, BHOOL BHULAIYAA did quite well to stabilize itself due to zero release week and fell by less than 40%. At 4 crores, the film has sustained exceedingly well and now reads 51 crores, hence all set to be the biggest ever box office success of Akshay Kumar with HEYY BABYY just a few lakhs ahead. While Mumbai was very good yet again by adding 1 crore against 1.25 crores last week, Delhi saw a massive fall from 50 lakhs to 20 lakhs. The bad news is that the film would witness a steep fall in numbers because it was more or less discontinued due to OSO/SAAWARIYA occupying majority of screens. LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG has now touched 20 crores and this is where it's run would end. With 60 lakhs more coming in the week gone by, the film has turned out to be a commercial as well as critical failure. In the future Due to OSO/SAAWARIYA euphoria, no film was planned for release in the coming weekend. This should now be beneficial for two movies - OM SHANTI OM and JAB WE MET!

GOAL - A 16 crore earner before it's release

UTV Motion Pictures scores a Goal even before the match begins! * Recovers close to Rs. 16 crores cost of production before theatrical release * Satellite rights, music rights, in-film advertising, home video and territory pre-sales ensure that Company breaks even before theatrical release UTV Motion Pictures has scored a Goal with its latest release - even before it kicks off in theatres! UTV Motion Pictures' DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL in association with Bindass, produced at a cost of close to Rs. 16 crores, starring John Abraham, Bipasha Basu, Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani, has recovered its cost of production before its worldwide theatrical release on November 23rd. Syndication of satellite, music rights, territory pre-sales, home video, in-film advertising with brands like Reebok, Western Union, Gillette all of these have contributed to the cop recovery even before the film release. This is aside from the incredible media and promotional support offered by these brands. Reebok, which sponsored the clothing line in the film, will retail the Goal range across 535 outlets in India. There will also be co-branded window-displays in Reebok showrooms promoting the Goal collection, which includes apparel and accessories related to football that figure in the movie. The Company has also licensed the gaming rights for the film to Indiagames, which has tied up with FIFA to launch the Goal-FIFA challenge on the Games-On-demand platform. The star cast of the film has gone all out to promote it, featuring on leading reality talent shows like Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and Voice of India, and gracing premieres in Dubai and Mumbai, with a London promotional visit thrown in too. ESPN Star Sports will integrate the catch-line of Goal - Duniya Goal Hai - to promote English Premier League matches to be telecast on ESPN in the month of November. John Abraham and Bipasha Basu will promote the line on ESPN Star Sports through channel ID'S all through November when the channel will run a contest to select 5 winners who get to watch an English Premier League match in the UK. Closer home, UTV has tied up with Zee Sports to organize the Goal Bus Tour in Delhi. The entire Goal team comprising the lead actors and other players of Southall Team have visited malls, schools and colleges in Delhi and interacted with their fans.

Box office analysis-February 16 , 2008

First weekend performance of latest release Neither SUPERSTAR nor MITHYA were expected to shake the box office. While the former was hardcore commercial in appeal and hence was expected to open better, MITHYA belonged to offbeat genre and hence had a lot riding on word of mouth. The opening weekend response for both the films was on a lower side though MITHYA started showing signs of improvement as the days progressed. SUPERSTAR is not a bad film but Kunal Khemu has yet not achieved a status where he can pull a film on his own. Though he has come up with his career best performance in the film, he would have to love only on accolades for a while. On the other hand, shoestring budget of MITHYA may just about help it pull through. Though (unfair) comparisons with BHEJA FRY had a section of audience taken aback initially, this Rajat Kapoor directed film may just about manage to hold on it's own. Just like SUPERSTAR, here too the film's central protagonist, Ranvir Shorey, has come up with his best performance ever. Last week's movies RAMA RAMA KYA HAI DRAMAAA is a flop. With only 1.5 crores in its kitty and nothing in the running in the second week, the film couldn't do to Rajpal Yadav what MAIN, MERI PATNI AUR WOH did where he played a lead actor. The film was poor all over with Mumbai being the highest with 30 lakhs. There were zero expectations in any case to begin with hence there were no surprises too when the film turned out to be lukewarm and hence was pulled off in quick time. Yet another addition to the tally of flops this year! From the past There was just a glitter of hope that SUNDAY may survive a sub-50% fall due to minimal competition around. However that was not the case to be as the film did see a 60% drop, hence bringing home only around 5 crores. In Mumbai the film earned close to 90 lakhs while Delhi just about managed to cross 50 lakhs. Though a 19 crores total means that the film is managing to sail through (just about, as predicted last week), the fact remains that SUNDAY hasn't turned out to be the box office success it deserved and the industry hoped. SUNDAY has turned out to be one of the puzzling cases where it is hard to pin down a film's underperformance. A lot is being said about the film's poor climax or music but there have been countless examples where films have worked with minor aberrations like a weak climax or complete lack of chartbuster soundtrack. In fact in case of SUNDAY, there were quite a few exciting tracks. Also, the humor in the film was better than the kind we have witnessed in recent times and even seen being successful. Anyways, leaving the post mortem aside, the actual collections mean that Ajay Devgan would have his eyes set on U ME AUR HUM. Meanwhile Rohit too has GOLMAAL RETURNS coming up which should bring his stocks in the running again. HALLA BOL has folded up completely after a four week run with it's total coming to 16 crores. The film's DVDs are out and since they have arrived on Moser Baer with a price tag of less than Rs. 50, the makers can expect the film to get visibility on home entertainment circuits at least. All this mayhem leaves TAARE ZAMEEN PAR to be the hot favorite till date. The film saw a fall of only around 35% fall and gained close to 2 crores. At 56 crores, it has one more week to go for the kill as this week would be see JODHA AKBAR dominate the screens. WELCOME too brought in another 50 lakhs and is now sitting at 75 crores. The film's DVDs are expected to arrive before month end. In the future Will it? Won't it? That's the question dominating the film industry in the last few days. There is a lot in stake when it comes to JODHAA AKBAR. Though the opening isn't expected to be fantabulous due to 'thanda' promotion, if only some reasonable word of mouth catches up, it is going to be advantage for JODHAA AKBAR all the way. Reason? From now till all the way into March, there is no major film releasing at theaters. That's because till 21st March, the day when RACE releases, the only other film coming in the way of JODHAA AKBAR is Subhash Ghai's BLACK & WHITE (on 7th March). With as many as 5 weeks between the release of JODHAA AKBAR and RACE, this Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai film has a lot going in it's favor provided things heat on the opening weekend.
