'2 States' collects Rs.38.06 crore in opening weekend

Abhishek Varman's debut directorial "2 States" managed to collect Rs.38.06 crore in its opening weekend. The audience is loving it for its slice-of-life portrayal of two lovers from different states of the country. While it made Rs.12.42 crore on its opening day April 18, "2 States" managed a business of Rs.12.13 crore and Rs.13.51 crore on the next two days, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh. The movie, distributed worldwide by UTV Motion Pictures, released in nearly 2,400 screens worldwide. In India, "2 States" released in over 2,000 screens and internationally, it released in close to 350 screens in 30 countries. Starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor as the couple in love, with Ronit Roy, Amrita Singh and Revathy in supporting roles, the movie was not just marketed aggressively, but is also getting good footfalls in theatres due to positive word-of-mouth. Co-produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala, the film tells the story of a couple belonging to two different states. It is based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller "2 States: The Story Of My Marriage", and also shows the coming together of two families from distinct cultural backgrounds. It appears to be doing well in international circuits too.

2 States continues to be favourite of audiences

Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt-starrer "2 States" is in its second week and it has raked in about Rs.70 crore at the domestic box office. Close on its heels is “Revolver Rani”, which came out this weekend. “Samrat & Co.” and Subhash Ghai’s “Kaanchi” haven't struck the right chord yet. According to sources, “2 States”, which released April 18, has earned Rs.69.83 crore net in the country. Based on a bestseller by author Chetan Bhagat, it is directed by first-timer Abhishek Varman. “‘2 States’ is still leading. Among the new releases, ‘Revolver Rani’ is doing the best. It has minted approximately Rs.3.25 crore in two days. ‘Kaanchi’ has collected about Rs.1.25 crore and ‘Samrat & Co.’ must have earned not more than Rs.50 lakh,” Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said. Though Kangana Ranaut-starrer “Revolver Rani” has done relatively better than the other two films that released April 25, the movie's performance at the box-office is not as good as her previous film "Queen". “The buzz wasn’t that great. Even the songs are not good and promotions didn’t create much hype,” said Thadani. Tagged as a “complete B-grade entertainment” by its producer Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film presents Kangana shooting guns and acting more like a male hero. While “Samrat & Co.” shows Rajeev Khandelwal as an investigator in the detective movie, women empowerment-based “Kaanchi” is Ghai’s directorial after six years.

Thankful '2 States' broke stereotype about me: Arjun Kapoor

After playing the action hero in "Ishaqzaade" and "Gunday", Arjun Kapoor essays a loverboy in his latest release "2 States", and he can only be thankful that it has given him a chance to explore a different look and genre. He hopes the audience slowly becomes more confident about his work. "I am thankful that people have broken that stereotype about me in their head. I wasn't targetting becoming an action hero or a loverboy...the idea is that people should watch my work and with every passing film, they should feel more confident about me," the 28-year-old said here Friday at the Galaxy theatre. Arjun loves that his "2 States" character Krish is non-heroic. "The feedback till now tells that they have liked the subtlety of my character which at a selfish level, I aspire for. You see the front-footed texture of Parma (in 'Ishaqzaade') and attitude of Bala ('Gunday'), but you see the simplicity of Krish," he said. "He is not a hero, which is what I like about him. He gets stuck between his mother and his girlfriend and I like the idea of him being non-heroic," he added. Arjun will continue to do different things in his future films. "The idea is to move forward with every film and that the director sees something new in you. It has happened in every film, but in '2 States' it is very visible because of the subtlety of the character," Arjun said. He believes directors can look beyond a person to find things that the actor himself doesn't know exist. "My next 'Finding Fanny Fernandes' is also different and I believe that directors can find things in you that you don't even know exist. I didn't know I can play a small-town rowdy, but I did in 'Ishaqzaade'. It's upto the director eventually, what he sees in me," he said. "2 States" is based on author Chetan Bhagat's similarly titled novel and hit the theatres Friday. Directed by Abhishek Verman, it stars Alia Bhatt opposite Arjun.

Mahesh Bhatt picks Arjun over Alia in '2 States'

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who watched his daughter Alia Bhatt’s third film “2 States”, is happy to see her playing a different role. But it’s her co-star Arjun Kapoor who stole the filmmaker’s heart. “‘2 States’ - Alia is fantastic in a startlingly different role. But it is Arjun who stole my heart and made me weep. He is a star! It’s a winner,” Mahesh posted on Twitter Monday. The film, based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller by the same name, revolves around a Punjabi boy, who falls in love with a Tamil girl. The regional and cultural clash that it leads to is what forms the rest of the story. It will hit theatres Friday.
