Box Office Analysis-March 24 , 2006
First weekend performance of latest release If there was anything consistent about Friday's release 'Umar', it was the utterly negative reviews it received. It was hard to find any good word about this movie about senior citizens and constant comparison with 'Baghban' further resulted in a difficult outing for this Karan Razdan flick. There was no opening at all to talk about and the movie is on its way to die down in a week's time. Jimmy Shergill again finds himself in a situation where he gets appreciation for his work but box office success continues to play hide and seek with him. Still, he has 'Tom Dick and Harry' to look forward to that is carrying highly positive reports. 'Banana Brothers'? Well, there wasn't any release worth calling out in the first place; hence there is no question of any box office outcome! Released with minimal prints in few territories with zero publicity, it is one of the films that get released and done away with in a matter of days and not even weeks! It would be a miracle of sorts if the all India collections read even 10 lakhs at the end of first week! Last week's movies One look at the box office results of 'Malamaal Weekly' and one can't help but exclaim - "That's Bollywood for you!" The movie boasted of limited publicity while the setting was in a village [hence seemingly unfit for multiplex audiences, as claimed by some industry experts!] But this Priyadarshan, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri combo did wonders throughout its first week from Friday till next Thursday with consistent collections across the country and not just any particular territory or centers. The film's title has proved to be true for its producers as this low budget movie crossed its investment by a big margin in the first week itself after totaling a staggering 10 crores. After a multi crore 'Rang De Basanti', this small film now boasts of the second biggest first week grosser of the year 2006! 'Malamaal Weekly' has crossed the 1 crore barrier in both Mumbai [1.6 crores] and Delhi [1.1 crores] while in Ahemdabad it has been phenomenal with 75 lakhs collections. 'Jigyaasa' saw a limited release and even limited collections as it merely managed to cross 10 lakhs total. The movie is a complete washout and now out of theatres at most places after one week itself. From the past 'Teesri Aankh - The Hidden Camera' had a miserable show towards the end of second week as the collections were near to negligible at all centers across the country. With just around 70 lakhs added to its first week's total of 4 crores, the writing is clear on the wall for the film. A 'masala' flick that was completely outdated in today's times, the audience gave it a cold shoulder even before its release and the negative vibes coupled with lackluster product made it a forgettable venture for Harry Baweja. A big loser for everyone involved, as the movie would at maximum be able to sustain at some centers for a couple of weeks! Arrival of 'Malamaal Weekly was the only reason for 'Taxi No. 9211' to slid to the second position as the film is still going strong at number of centers, especially Mumbai where it has managed to total 70 lakhs + even in its third week. Even at other centers, big or small, it is doing decent business inspite of an urban setting and is now one of the biggest grossers for John Abraham and Nana Patekar. The movie has now reached around 16.5 crore and should come quite close to 20 crore mark, hence making it a comfortable hit! 'Fight Club' is virtually out of the rings now with negligible collections coming in 4 weeks after the film's release. This multistarrer that promised a decent outing has ended its run with around 6.5 crore in its kitty while a relatively unknown 'Mixed Doubles' too breathes its last at 1.25 crore mark! Emraan Hashmi's magic continues to get some money for the producers in an extended run of 'Aksar' as the total inches towards the 9 crore mark. At one point of time it seemed that the movie would just about stretch towards 8-8.5 crores, but its performance over last couple of weeks [though in small amounts] has helped the collections to be consolidated. 'Rang De Basanti' takes an extremely marginal fall in its seventh week [just around 15%] that is simply phenomenal. Collections continue to read in crores as the film continues to do superbly all over. Further 2 crores came in from cities like Delhi [35 lakhs] and Mumbai [26 lakhs], which means that now the film has crossed the 46 crore mark. Now it has dislodged last year's biggest success 'No Entry' from the Top 5 biggest grossers of the year while being just a few lakhs away from 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' that holds the 4th position! In the future Though three movies are slated for release this Friday, Being Cyrus, Eight Shani and Souten - The Other Woman, ironically it is the English film 'Being Cyrus' that is being most sought after, though in relative terms. Earlier titled 'Akoori', 'Being Cyrus' has been ready for quite some time but is now being released. An urban multiplex film, its special due to Saif Ali Khan, who is being said to be highly menacing and unpredictable in the film. The curiosity factor should get it a decent initial [in the range of 50%] but lack of any other notable release for one more week to come should help 'Being Cyrus' recover its costs. After 'Umar', Karan Razdan has two more releases this Friday - 'Eight Shani' and 'Souten - The Other Woman'. While the former is about supernatural and has seen patchy publicity, the latter is a social drama that looks a little dated. None of the two movies really give out much positive vibes w.r.t. their box office outing, though 'Souten' should read better collections.
Sunil Shetty is 'alert' 24 hours a day
Think twice before you try to get a little smart with Sunil Shetty. Because you may not know that he is a man who is alert 24 hours a day. Well, this is what is proclaimed by "Anna", a character played by Shetty in the film 'Shaadi Se Pehle'. A stylized don who travels in swanky cars, sports a MS Dhoni ishtyle hairdo with long black coats coming straight from John Travolta's wardrobe in 'Face/Off', 'Anna' knows to keep danger on bay. He has an oft-repeated one liner in the movie - 'Apun Anna, Chaubees Ghante Chaukanna [I am Anna, alert 24 hours]' that makes for some hilarious setting and is sure to invoke laughter in the theatres during the screening of comic caper. No wonder Boman Irani's character in the movie exclaims at his one liner - "So what do you do 24 hours a day, run a day and night chemist shop?!"
Box office analysis-January 24 , 2008
First weekend performance of latest release There were never any expectations from either BOMBAY TO BANGKOK or TULSI. Still, one expected at least a face saving opening for the former, though even that didn't happen. There was absolutely zero excitement around this Nagesh Kukunoor-Shreyas Talpade and the outcome was near empty houses all over. The film is en route to be yet another washout for the month of January. So what really went wrong? Well, it is the fact BOMBAY TO BANGKOK is a sheer bad product! Nagesh Kunoor films have seldom taken any box office opening and have instead worked only with word of mouth. IQBAL and DOR have been a testimony to that. BOMBAY TO BANGKOK was no exception but the film turned out to be such a pedestrian product from a film maker of the caliber of Kukunoor that word of mouth instantly turned out to be out and out negative. Result? Yet another film which keeps the industry in red. TULSI didn't even get a proper release and for reasons best known to the makers, Manisha Koirala, film's leading lady, was completely kept out of picture. A dated film, it never had a chance to make any difference to a bad start to 2008 and expectedly tanked on the first day itself. Last week's movies HALLA BOL had opened on a lower side but showed an upward trend over the weekend. Still as the week progressed, the film couldn't sustain itself and the result was that in spite of a huge release (over 700 cinemas), the film could only net around 11.5 crores. Poor. Reported collections from the city of Mumbai barely crossed the 1 crore mark while Delhi too was far from impressive, as indicated by the figure of 75 lakhs in collections. This Rajkumar Santoshi-Ajay Devgan-Pankaj Kapoor film has turned out to be one of the unfortunate box office failures in recent times. A good film which deserved to do far better than what it has eventually done, HALLA BOL would be out on DVDs soon. Hopefully audience would catch the film there and appreciate it's content. A film for the masses, HALLA BOL did get cheers, whistles and claps by those who watched it but sadly number of such people was on the lower side. Even though HALLA BOL would go down as a glorified failure, MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES won't achieve even an iota of that as it has turned out to be a disastrous cinematic beginning for newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi. With only 60 lakhs coming from the first week, MNIAG has been discontinued from majority of cinemas and would see a very quick DVD release. A lost cause, the film had pathetic collections all over, whether Mumbai (14 lakhs) or Delhi (4 lakhs). From the past As is the situation currently, no other film apart from TAARE ZAMEEN PAR or WELCOME is exciting audience to visit theaters. HANUMAN RETURNS is a washout with over 90% fall in it's third week. The film has barely touched 1.75 crores mark and it would end at this point. Meanwhile OM SHANTI OM and JAB WE MET have more or less ended their box office run. A pleasant box office surprise comes in the form of TAARE ZAMEEN PAR which can be termed as simply spectacular. The film is hardly taking a fall and even in it's fourth week, it has netted more than 7 crores. Amazing! At 46 crores, the film is a solid superhit and has chances of reaching a further level up due to SUNDAY being the only competition till JODHA AKBAR arrives way down on 15th February. For yet another week where it's collections have surpassed those of WELCOME, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is doing exceedingly well in Mumbai where it collected another 2 crores. Delhi is excellent too with 90 lakhs. Meanwhile WELCOME too continues to find an audience and considering it's fantastic opening, it has done quite well to fall by only 50% in it's fourth week. The film collected 70 lakhs in Mumbai and 30 lakhs in Delhi and Ahmedabad each. Bringing home another 4.5 crores +, WELCOME has now crossed 70 crores and sitting pretty at 71 crores. Already the third highest money spinner of all times after OM SHANTI OM and DHOOM 2, WELCOME has turned out to be big, really big, for everyone involved with it. In the future 2008 drought should be finally over with SUNDAY. The film promises to be a sure shot masala entertainer and the multi starrer feel is generating very good vibes. Director Rohit Shetty has a pulse for making massy movies, as evidenced in ZAMEEN and GOLMAAL and SUNDAY seems to be no exception. A comic thriller with a fine finish to it, SUNDAY seems to be just the right meal for Bollywood lovers who have been hungry for catching hold of an entertaining flick ever since the Christmas release of WELCOME and TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. Expect a 70%-80% start for this Ajay Devgan, Irrfan Khan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia flick.
Box office analysis-April 24 , 2008
First weekend performance of latest release HOPE AND A LITTLE SUGAR saw good reviews but pathetic collections coming it's way at the box office. Though this Mahima Chaudhary starrer doesn't have much to talk about when it comes to box office returns, at least if one looks at an opening day response, it has still managed to garner some good reviews in most newspaper/websites. Silver lining comes in the form of HOPE AND A LITTLE SUGAR being acclaimed as the best effort ever for both Mahima Chaudhary and Tanuja Chandra. Though the arrival of TASHAN coming Friday doesn't sound like a good idea for the survival of HOPE AND A LITTLE SUGAR in weeks to come, at the least positive reviews should help the film enjoy good home viewing once the DVDs hit the stands. Last week's movies U ME AUR HUM couldn't quite capitalize on the positive reviews it garnered. The film picked up over the weekend but the collections didn't escalate to a safe level as the week progressed. With a modest 12 crores coming it's way after the first week, U ME AUR HUM is currently on a shaky ground. A well made film, U ME AUR HUM had maximum moolah coming from Mumbai (3 crores) though Delhi wasn't much encouraging at barely 1 crore. Though lack of any major release in the week gone by could have proved to be an added advantage for the film, there are three factors which go against it. a) As per word of mouth amongst commoners, the film has been termed as a little too serious for comfort, especially in the second half, b) IPL is eating away all prime time evening and night shows and c) People are saving money for TASHAN. KRAZZY 4 saw a nosedive after a bumper initial as it started showing cracks the moment weekdays progressed. Though factors 'b' and 'c', as in case of U ME AUR HUM above, have hampered KRAZZY 4's progress as well, close to 16.5 crores coming from the first week means that the film is a safe bet. Released at close to 700 cinemas, KRAZZY 4 too did it's best business in Mumbai (over 3 crores) while Delhi was average at 1.25 crores. As per the current scenario, neither U ME AUR HUM nor KRAZZY 4 are promising much at the box office and are seemingly fading away though after managing to cover their cost at the least. Both the films should do good at the DVD circuits though with KRAZZY 4 having a definite edge due to it's comic feel. From the past SHAURYA couldn't survive in it's second week and completely crashed with close to 80% fall. With merely 35 lakhs coming in spite of very good reviews and positive word of mouth by those who saw it, it was the competition from U ME AUR HUM and KRAZZY 4 which proved to be too big a competition for this film meant for niche audience. At 2 crores, the film is now hardly in the running and gearing up for it's DVD release. On the other hand KHUDA KAY LIYE did throw in a surprise in spite of zero promotion and sustained itself in the second week purely on the basis if word of mouth. With a select release working in it's favor, this Pakistani film fell by only 30% and garnered another 50 lakhs. With 1 crore milestone being achieved, it is a sign of good things coming from across the boundary in months to come. After making good moolah in it's opening fortnight due to a big release and in the process exhausting it's audience in the A and B centers, ONE TWO THREE saw a major crash in the third week and fell by 85%. The film could gather only 80 lakhs more but whatever came into it's coffers after the very first week was a bonus. This is why if one looks at the overall 18 crores total for this medium budget film, it looks pretty much impressive. An above average success, ONE TWO THREE has added on to the list of comic hits in last so many months. Even in it's fourth week, RACE is dealing in crores, as can be witnessed from over 2 crores that the film earned from across the country. Though the fall was quite huge in the case of RACE as well (over 70%), the overall total of 61 crores has ensured that the film gets a big HIT tag for itself. Expect great sales for the film's DVDs as well which would be hitting the stands by April end. With RACE falling big in the week gone by and JODHAA AKBAR continuing to sustain itself, it would be a photo finish between the two films to win the box office 2008 'race' in the months gone by. The film collected further 21 lakhs and is sitting pretty over 62 crores. Now it would be interesting to see which of the two films outwits each other in weeks to come, though the balance seems to tilting towards JODHAA AKBAR In the future Till about 2 weeks back, it seemed that TASHAN would turn out to be THE film which would break the OM SHANTI OM record of 40 crores. After all the film had everything in it's favor - Yash Raj Films banner, Vishal-Shekhar's music and of course a deadly cast comprising of Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. With nothing but the best expected from this holds-no-bar commercial entertainer, it was pretty much cast on stone that the film would take a bumper initial all over and hence make OM SHANTI OM's 40 crores seem history. However, since Yash Raj Films has under promoted the film with a purpose in order to let 'audiences explore the film' by themselves, one wonders if the strategy is indeed worth it? TASHAN would indeed take a solid start due to a loyal set of movie buffs which would throng the theaters the moment it hits the screen. Nevertheless, it is slightly doubtful if this itself would be good enough for the film to break the first week opening record!
Box office analysis-July 24 , 2008
First weekend performance of latest release Sometimes all one needs to make a film a box office success is good music, very good publicity, beautiful actors and some attractive locations. Of course the content does the final talking in most of the cases but there are exceptions to the rule. KISMAT KONNECTION hits the jackpot by being one such exception. The film wasn't extraordinary; in fact it was one of the most ordinary works of Aziz Mirza but Pritam's chartbuster music aided by some spirited act by Shahid Kapoor, Vidya Balan and Vishal Malhotra saved the day for the fim. In fact not just the day but an entire weekend, as apparent from the huge start that the film took. Opening over 80% on Friday, the film sustained well in the same ratio on Saturday and Sunday as well, hence ensuring that the candy floss film sails away to success. Of course the film isn't bad at all (that's exactly the reason why crowds kept coming in even on the Saturday/Sunday); it is just that overall it isn't as impressive as the promos indicated. Last 30 minutes of the film make one feel completely indifferent to the proceedings but it is the effervescence of the first half which compensates for that. As of now TIPS and UTV are enjoying their second straight success together after RACE. With coming fortnight not really proving to be challenging enough and SINGH IS KINNG being far away (8th August), Shahid Kapoor can ensure yet another good HIT to his name after VIVAH and JAB WE MET! Ditto for Vidya who is now is making it three in a row after HEYY BABYY and BHOOL BHULAIYAA. What can one say about CONTRACT? The film hasn't even risen at all to show any kind of drop whatsoever. The film was 'thanda' on Friday and followed the same route on Saturday and Sunday as well. Adhvik Mahajan has got good reviews for himself but since the film has hardly been seen by many (and seems to be on it's way off the theaters in a fortnight's time), his effort may largely go unnoticed. Honestly, the film isn't a bad watch per se but the KISMAT KONNECTION (and JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA which is still going strong) made sure that audience preferred feel good over underworld! Last week's movies A decent opening at smaller centers (it's target audience) had raised hopes for MEHBOOBA. The star cast got the film it's initial at select centers. However, it was just a bubble which burst soon after. The moment opening weekend was through, the film crashed at the box office. Result was that in spite of being released at 400 cinemas (most of them being single screen though), the film could muster only 2 crores. Quite poor for a film which has been made on a very lavish budget. Mumbai had mere 40 lakhs to show while Delhi was extremely poor with only 10 lakhs. Unlike another stuck film like BIG BROTHER (starring Sunny Deol which had released last year after being in the making for 5 years and had still went on to make close to 7-8 crores), MEHBOOBA is all set to disappear in a fortnight's time. Ironically, this one is a huge flop which doesn't make a difference to anyone associated with the film except for the distributors who had invested in it. As for producer-director Afzal Khan, he has GOD TUSSI GREAT HO to look forward to (which by the way has debutant Rumi Jafrey at the helm of direction) From the past JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA has turned out to be a blockbuster at the box office. Not just that, it has also created a record for Imran Khan who now has the biggest grosser to his credit when it comes to a debut film. Sustaining itself brilliantly with increased number of prints in it's second week, the film has barely shown a fall in collections and collected another 17 crores at the box office. This brings it's two week total to more than 37 crores which leaves behind the collections of all those blockbusters/super hits in the last couple of decades which featured newcomers. The films that we are talking about are KAHO NAA...PYAAR HAI, MAINE PYAAR KIYA, QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK and ISHQ VISHK - each of which had it's main lead being seen in a lead role (in a commercial set-up) for the first time. Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shahid Kapoor - each of them had a great kick start to their career when the aforementioned films went on to be huge hits. The collections for these films (incidentally all of them belonged to romantic genre) were huge and turned the actors into a household name. The same has now happened for Imran Khan for whom JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA has turned out to be a great beginning. Collections speak for themselves as 37 crores in just two weeks is far more than what any debutant leading hero has enjoyed in the past. The film boasted of more than 4 crores in it's second week at Mumbai while Delhi had another 2.25 crores to add. NCR brought in another 1.25 crores which makes JTYJN a bona fide blockbuster in the making. With 50 crores collections being a given for this Abbas Tyrewala film, it now has to be seen whether the film goes on to top 60 crores, a benchmark set by the two biggest grossers of 2008 so far - RACE and JODHAA AKBAR! LOVE STORY 2050 is now officially a box office disaster. Incurring heavy losses after a (expected) massive crash in it's second week, it's publicity too has come to a standstill. It must certainly be heartbreaking for Bawejas who spent close to 3 years in creating this dream for celluloid. Yes, the effort was visible but audience, which has it's own parameters for getting enthused about a film, didn't quite worry much about what went behind the scenes. What was on screen mattered most and truly, LOVE STORY 2050 didn't quite succeed in that. Just like RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG last year, LOVE STORY 2050 too took more than 80% drop with a little more than 1.5 crores coming in. At 12 crores, the film is making a hasty retreat from theaters. Quite disappointing! While JTYJN was keeping people busy in giving it a second watch, YRF clearly gave up and got their act focused on BACHNA AE HASEENO instead. The man who would be most bitter by the turn of events should be Kunal Kohli himself since he hadn't quite made a bad film. On any other day with another production house and a different cast, his fantasy film may just have managed to sail through. However, the stars didn't quite favor him with JTYJN killing whatever limited chances that the film had. Result was another 70% fall and only 1.25 crores coming which brings the film's total to 22 crores. FLOP. In the future MISSION ISTANBUL and MONEY HAI TOH HONEY HAI are the two releases in the coming weekend but none of the two are expected to take anything better than a 30%-40% opening. Out of the two, MISSION ISTANBUL should open better since it has been aggressively promoted by producer Suneil Shetty. Also, Apoorva Lakhia has made a couple of well directed action films in the recent years (SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA and EK AJNABEE) that may just bring in the audience over the weekend. Surprisingly MONEY HAI TOH MONEY HAI has not touched even 25% of the kind of promotion which producer Kumar Mangat has done for his films like SUNDAY, ONE TWO THREE and even HAAL E DIL. The film's promos have been ordinary too and until and unless there is a trend reversal happening with the film turning out to be better than the promos, this Govinda starrer doesn't quite stand a chance!
