Box office analysis-March 27 , 2008

First weekend performance of latest release Months after the release of OM SHANTI OM and WELCOME, a film has managed to take a stupendous opening at the box office. RACE, the film which Bollywood was looking forward to after a relative lean 2008 (that only had JODHAA AKBAR making a mark), has got audience back into the theaters. The film has worked all over, whether A, B or C centers, and is drawing all segments of audience with family crowds as well as student community thronging the theaters. In addition, RACE has turned out to be one of those few films which has broken single screens v/s multiplex audience and taken an exceptional opening all over. The way things stand today, this Abbas Mustan directed film is all set to break the 35 crore barrier when it comes to first week's collections. If it does so (which looks quite positive as of now), RACE would only be the fourth film to do so after OM SHANTI OM (40 crores), WELCOME (35 crores) and DHOOM 2 (35 crores)! Abbas Mustan are certainly back in the 'race'! Last week's movies There was no new notable film release last weekend. From the past BLACK & WHITE has proved many a trade analysts wrong with the way it performed in it's second week. As indicated in last week's column, the film's collections were not up to the mark but certainly not horrendous. However, though it seemed that in second week BLACK & WHITE won't be able to recover from a disappointing opening, it wasn't the case to be as the film fell by only 45%. Now that's quite reasonable considering the fact that it earlier seemed all dead for this Subhash Ghai venture. Yes, an open week and tax exemption did help but at the end of the day what matters is the inflow of moolah. The film managed to get close to 2 crores in it's second week hence bringing the overall collections to a respectable 5.25 crore. For a moderately priced film like BLACK & WHITE, this is good money which brings the film to coverage status. Whatever comes from here is a bonus and Ghai would be happy that his film hasn't quite been rejected as some wanted him to believe on the day of the film's release. JODHAA AKBAR - Now the movie is turning out to be a VIVAH when it comes to trending and that too on a higher side since the collections are turning out to be quite consistent week after week. When compared with weeks before this, it's 5th week should be considered to be the best when compared with the rest since the film fell by less than 15%. Yes, you read it right - 15%! With as much as 4.5 crores coming in, the film has now crossed 58 crores mark and looks all set to make it 60 crores as the week draws to a close. Now that's commendable because while doing so, it would have achieved the 60 crore milestone in 6 weeks, something which TAARE ZAMEEN PAR did in 12 weeks! JODHAA AKBAR continued to be amazing all over with Mumbai bringing more than 60 lakhs and Delhi being quite good at 50 lakhs! Coming to TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, it too had just 15% fall, hence adding another 30 lakhs to it's total. As it approaches a 100 days run at the theaters, the film's collections stand at 60.5 crores. Now can we have the film's DVDs being out please? It has been quite some wait and film lovers are dying to own a copy for their home video library! In the future ONE TWO THREE is the sole notable release of the week and though RACE is doing super strong business at the box office, superb promotional campaign by the makers of ONE TWO THREE would ensure that the film doesn't go unnoticed. Promising to be a laugh riot, the film looks like a run ride in the offering. With exams season coming to an end and students looking at having a quota of their films, ONE TWO THREE should take a reasonable (50%-60%) opening at the box office. Now even if it does that, it has a real chance of making an impression since the overall product appears to be a mass entertainer which should manage to find an audience for itself courtesy word of mouth.

Sonakshi turns 27, gifts herself tattoo

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha, who turned 27 Monday, has given herself a gift for life - a tattoo of a star. The "Dabangg" actress took to Twitter to share a photograph of herself and her newly acquired inking, and posted: "Surpriiiiise! My birthday gift to myself is this tattoo...My guiding star, now always with me." The tattoo is placed above her collarbone. Daughter of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha, Sonakshi made her Bollywood debut in 2010 with the blockbuster "Dabangg" opposite Salman Khan. That set the ball rolling for her and she has since featured in films like "Rowdy Rathore", "Son Of Sardaar", "Dabangg 2", "Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara", "Boss" and "R... Rajkumar". Her bubbly and vivacious screen presence has been a boon to typical desi potboilers, but her differentiated performance in "Lootera" was widely lauded for being sensitive and emotional. Now, Sonakshi is awaiting the release of "Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty Films", in which she stars with Akshay Kumar. The film is coming out Friday.

Kali 27 Days Box Office Collections

Dulquer Salmaan starring action thriller Kali has completed one month at the theatres. The Sameer Thahir movie, which stars Sai Pallavi in the female lead, is Dulquer's first release of the year. Reportedly, Kali has made a gross collection of 13.35 Crores, from its 27 days of theatrical run in Kerala. The net collection is 10.76 Crores and share is almost 5.80 Crores. While considering the initial collection made by the movie, it has failed to meet the expectations of the makers. Kali was initially expected to emerge the top 5 highest grossers list of Mollywood. The movie collected Rs. 2.34 Crores on the first day of release, from the Kerala box office. The first 3 days were extremely favourable for Kali, as the movie collected Rs. 5.75 Crores within such a short period. Even though the movie received fairly positive reviews from all over, Kali failed to impress a major group of audiences, which badly affected the collections. So, the first-week collection was restricted to 8 Crores.

Box Office Analysis-February 27 , 2007

Mozhi, Paruthi Veeran rock The battle at the box - office this February has been a royale one. A host of films including biggies hit the screens and the race for supremacy was at its peak. Move over Pongal releases, the films that hit the screens this 'Valentine month' witnessed good crowds. The likes of Lee starring Sibiraj and Nila, Jayam Ravi starrer Deepavali, director Gowtham's Pachaikili Muthucharam, Prakash Raj's home production Mozhi and director Ameer's Paruthi Veeran hit the screens. Interestingly all the movies opened big. However, expectations were high on Mozhi and Paruthi Veeran. It was a perfect beginning for Studio Greens' Paruthi Veeran and Mozhi from Prakash Raj's stable. The former, a debut film of Karthi (Suriya's sibling), directed by Ameer has taken a fantastic opening all over Tamil Nadu. Usually, films of debutantes do not have a great opening. This film has successfully re-written the norms and opened to packed houses. It is witnessing housefull shows in rural centres too. The technical excellence in the film coupled with the stupendous performances of the stars has won the movie great accolades. Word-of-mouth publicity about this film is high and this film is not just being critically acclaimed, it is also proving to be a big commercial success. Not far behind is Mozhi. Prithviraj's elegant performance and Jyothika's effervescent histrionics as a deaf and dumb girl are the talking points of the movie. A noteworthy aspect of this film is the dialogues which combine sensibility and sensitivity. Director Radha Mohan's films have always been dialogue-oriented and his forte seems to be blending light-hearted humour in a shrewd storyline. Interestingly, both Paruthi Veeran and Mozhi carry good reviews and the good run is expected to continue without a hitch. Pachaikili Muthucharam shows Sarath Kumar, the mass hero, in a totally different light. While the attention grabbing factor for A centres is Gowtham Menon, for B and C it is Sarath Kumar. Not to forget, this shows Jyothika in a different role too and she has done her role with aplomb. The film is having a decent run. Shrewd publicity and persistent hardwork which is apparent in Sibiraj's performance have worked for Lee. This is Sathyaraj's first production and director Prabhu Solomon's second directorial venture, after he got a good name with Kokki. All these seem to have worked in the film's favour and the film is doing reasonably well. This film is safe stake and no one is injured in the game. Lee is reportedly drawing steady crowds thanks to the director and the producer who are opting for various avenues to reach out to the movie-buffs. Director Lingusamy's maiden production venture Deeppavali is doing well particularly in the A centre. This romantic and clean entertainer has won the admiration of the youngsters. A big plus of this film is the performance of the lead stars Jayam Ravi and Bhavana, music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and a climax which is not clich©d. Ezhil, who is known for his feel-good love stories, has arrived into the scene again with this film. Good publicity has helped this film's cause to a major extent. Meanwhile, though a Pongal release, Vijay's Pokkiri is still drawing good crowds. A remake of the Telugu blockbuster titled the same, the movie directed by Prabhudeva is a mass film and thanks to Vijay fans- the film has been maintaining a good run. A racy screenplay and action which is aplenty, has helped the film retain its charm despite many newfound competitors. There are enough and more ingredients in the film that keeps the audience happy-Vijay's action, a fast-paced narrative, an alluring Asin and peppy music. However, there is a threat now and it is all set to come in the form of annual examinations and the World Cup cricket match, which would kick off early next month. The cricket frenzy is already catching up and this is worrying news for those in the industry. But then, nothing can be predicted for sure at this stage. All that we can do now is this- Wait and watch! We will do just that and keep hoping that there is no slump in the collections for the films.
