300 Rly staff killed by trains every year, most of them while inspecting tracks
A railway employee dies in the line of duty on four days out of five, making his job statistically far more dangerous than that of security forces in some of India's most violent combat zones. An average 300 railwaymen have been killed in accidents every year over the past 4-5 years, S K Jain, Member (Engineering) of the Railway Board, told The Indian Express. Most of them were run over by trains as they patrolled the tracks to ensure there were no fractures in the rails, a major reason for derailments. While the railwaymen work at all times, in the scorching sun or pouring rain, the number of deaths has spiked at night and in winter, when they use flashlights to look for cracks. A total 285 railwaymen were killed in accidents in 2012, nearly eight times the number of personnel (37) that the CRPF lost fighting leftwing extremism. In addition, 800 railwaymen were injured while physically monitoring 1 lakh kilometres of tracks in the country. "Until a few years ago, over 400 people were being killed on average every year. We have been able to bring the number down, but it is still unacceptably high. A technological solution is needed," Jain said. The Railways has now reached out for a track-inspection technique patented by the South African Navy, which it hopes will help it do away with the century-old system of physically walking down the tracks. The technology, called Railsonic, involves the release of an ultrasonic wave along the rails every 10 minutes, the receipt of which by a receiver at the other end confirms the absence of fractures. The technology will be tried out on a 25-km stretch of the Konkan Railway. It will cost Rs 5 lakh per kilometre, and can be deployed fairly soon, officials said.

Hollywood blockbuster '300', which has registered record collections in its opening weekend in USA, is coming to India tomorrow. Before that, select audience in New Delhi would be able to watch the film today itself in an exclusive premier that is taking place at PVR Plaza. The event is expected to be graced by top celebrities of the city, Page 3 regulars and select invitees. A film based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians. The film stars Gerard Butler, Vincent Regan, Lena Headey and David Wenham.
Bosco-Caesar celebrate 300 projects choreography
It has been a long and eventful journey for Bosco-Caesar from their early days of dancing in college festivals to the current sequence of helming dance sequences for multi million dollar films with major stars of the Bollywood Industry. From their first film project of Mission Kashmir with Hrithik Roshan to their first music video production with Isha Koppikar dancing on the tidal waves of Indian Ocean. From multiple award winning advertisements to Shahid and Kareena foot thumping dance moves in Jab We Met etc are just a few examples of the new wave of dance movement that is sweeping the turnstiles courtesy of Bosco-Caesar. To help commemorate the fulfillment of 300 songs, advertisements and music videos across various genres, languages and aesthetic sensibilities Bosco-Caesar held a major bash in a popular Mumbai night club. It was also Bosco's birthday, which made it a double whammy for all the guests assembled. The party featured a galaxy of stars, celebrities, directors and producers of the Indian entertainment industry. Highlight of the party was Salman Khan who, inspite of making a let entry, more than made up for it by staying in there for close to one hour. Other celebrities who graced the event were Amrita Arora, Sophie Chodhary, Rosa, filmmakers Suneel Darshan, Kumar Taurani and Abbas-Mustan. Meghna Naidu, Aryaman, Karan Sharma, Atul Agnihotri with his wife, Hazel, Arjun Kapoor, Alim and cricketers Mervyn Dillon (West Indies) and Heyward (South Africa) also joined in. Abhishek Bachchan was missed though as he could not make it to the event. The '300' landmark was arrived after the completion of the shooting of the title track for the movie 'God Tussi Great Ho' starring Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan and directed by Rumi Jaffry. The fact that the landmark was arrived after working with two industry legends makes it even more appropriate. Says Bosco Martis, one half of the Bosco-Caesar duo, 'from college festivals to music videos to ad shoots and of course film songs it has been a challenging roller coaster ride. I would like to thank all the industry personnel who have supported us through the years'. He adds with a smile 'I am looking forward to celebrate 1000 projects in a couple of years'. Says Caesar Gonsalves, 'To say that dancing has evolved over the years is an understatement of sorts. The audiences have become more discriminatory and it has been a constant source of challenge and fun to keep in tune with the times and create moves and make the whole country dance to it.' After establishing themselves as the avant-garde Bollywood choreographers Bosco-Caesar are planning to open dance institutes in Mumbai and various cities in the world. Named Bosco-Caesar Dance Company (BCDC) they have already started operations in Dubai catering to the huge Indian Diaspora and have plans to open in London, Kula Lumpur and Durban early next year.
New Zealand quake: 300 missing, 75 bodies recovered
The New Zealand government Wednesday declared a state of emergency a day after massive earthquake hit the country’s second largest city killing at least 75 people and leaving 300 missing in perhaps the worst disaster in the country’s history. According to Civil Defence Minister John Carter, the declaration of a National Emergency reflects the likelihood that Tuesday’s quake may prove to be New Zealand’s worst natural disaster, the New Zealand Herald reported. “We felt it was justified in this case because of the devastation that’s occurring and the likely impact it will have on so many people,” the minister was quoted as saying. The quake hit the central city, a business hub of New Zealand, at 12:51 p.m. Tuesday when office buildings and streets were packed with people. In 1931, an earthquake hit New Zealand’s northern Napier city, killing 256 people. But Carter said until the toll and damage from Tuesday’s quake was confirmed, “it’s difficult to make those sorts of comparisons”. Carter said the confirmed toll so far, including those dead who remained unidentified, was at 75. “I don’t think it would be appropriate for me or any one else to speculate on that,” he said. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said there were now 55 identified bodies at a morgue, which had been set up at local military base, DPA reported. Another 20 bodies had been recovered, but were not yet at the morgue and had yet to be identified. Parker said it was hoped that many of those 300 missing people would be accounted for over the course of the day. Search and rescue staff also said many people remain trapped alive inside buildings destroyed by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake. More than 120 people had already been pulled from collapsed buildings as rescuers worked through the night under floodlights in the rain. Search efforts are focussed on around 10 buildings, where it is feared more than 100 people could still be trapped. These included a number of Japanese students who had been studying English in Christchurch. Fifteen people were confirmed alive in one building as rescuers tried to reach them through tonnes of rubble. However, police gave up all hope of finding survivors at Canterbury TV station building which was also collapsed. Police inspector Dave Lawry said he was “100 percent” sure that those trapped in the building, including a group of overseas students, were dead. Civil Defence national controller David Coetzee said, search and rescue teams could continue looking for survivors Wednesday night. Coetzee said hundreds of rescuers, including seven local response teams from across New Zealand, have been deployed. Defence Minister Wayne Mapp said about 1,000 defence personnel were deployed in the rescue efforts. A disaster assistance and relief team of 55 people from Singapore is expected to arrive Wednesday and 198 people from the US, Japan, and Britain Thursday. Prime Minister John Key said the quake had brought “death and destruction on a dreadful scale”. He said there was no question the earthquake would have a significant economic impact on Christchurch and New Zealand. “We’re going to have to go back and reassess every building,” Key said, adding that the earthquake was estimated to have cost $6-8 billion. The country’s flags were flying half-mast on all government buildings Wednesday to honour the victims of the devastating quake.
Baahubali' enters Rs.300 crore club
S.S. Rajamouli's magnum opus "Baahubali" has become the first south Indian film to enter the Rs.300 crore club in just nine days, confirms a trade analyst. It has surpassed the previous record held by superstar Rajinikanth's "Enthiran", which had collected approximately Rs.290 crore at the box office. "As of Saturday, the film has grossed Rs.303 crore worldwide," trade analyst Trinath told. "The Hindi version of the film has netted over Rs.50 crore, setting a new record for a dubbed film. Despite the onslaught of 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan', the numbers of 'Baahubali' have not been affected," he said. A mythological drama about two brothers at war for a kingdom, the film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles. The second part in the Rs.250 crore franchise is slated for release next year.
