Mobile gaming firm Rovio said on Wednesday its hit game Angry Birds had reached a record 500 million downloads in less than two years since its launch. "It's more than any game ever before," Rovio's marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka told a conference in Helsinki. Unlike most mobile-game crazes, Angry Birds -- in which players use a slingshot to attack pigs who steal the birds' eggs -- has stayed at the top of the charts since it was launched for Apple's iPhone on Dec 11, 2009. Vesterbacka said the company's next aim was to reach one billion fans globally, on devices including mobile phones and computers. The gaming company is expanding the brand across traditional merchandising, to items such as toys and baby products, and is taking the birds to the big screen with film studios. Earlier this year, Rovio raised $42 million from venture capital firms in an investment co-led by Accel Partners, which previously backed Facebook and Baidu, and Skype founder Niklas Zennstroem's venture capital firm Atomico Ventures. Rovio was founded in 2003 after three students including Niklas Hed -- CEO Mikael Hed's cousin and now Rovio's COO -- won a game-development competition sponsored by Nokia Oyj and Hewlett-Packard CO. It changed its name from Relude in 2005.
Angry Birds, Facebook most downloaded apps in 2011
Angry Birds and Facebook were the most downloaded iPhone apps of 2011, according to Apple, but some less predictable apps also made their lists. Craig Palli, a vice president at Fiksu, a marketing company for app developers, explained that this year's top apps incorporate three main trends: the ability to connect with friends, discovery and games that let users past the time and pick up where they left off. The top app in the social networking category was Facebook. But Palli said the trend of connecting with friends extends further. "It also encompasses Skype, all the free texting apps and even Bump. These are all apps that lend themselves to enriching our lives through an easier and greater amount of communication and connections with friends," Palli explained. In the music category, Pandora, which generates personalized radio stations for its users based on their music preferences, was the top app. "Pandora is such a good app that they don't really need to spend money in marketing. They just get user after user because it's such a compelling experience," Palli said. TuneIn Radio Pro, which provides access to over 50,000 local and global stations, was another popular music app. In the games category, Words with Friends, a multi-player game, and Angry Birds were the most downloaded apps. Games captured nine of the top ten spots on the paid apps list. "They fill those five minutes of time that we were otherwise waiting for a train or appointment," explained Palli. He added that phones are beginning to replace cameras, which explains the success of apps in the photo and video category. "First it was the Polaroid camera, then it was the in-the-pocket digital camera. It's now just your phone." Instagram, also named Apple's iPhone app of the year, topped the camera category. It allows users to take photos, add filters and share them with friends. Camera+, which extends the iPhone's camera with features like zoom, also made the list. In the health and fitness category, Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker and Nike+ GPS, an app for tracking runs and workouts, were winners. But Palli said the category has fewer downloads than others. "The volume of downloads that occur in this category is less than one tenth of the other categories," he said, but he predicts that this category will grow in 2012 as people become more health-conscious and apps "augment the actual device itself with something physical." Groupon, the daily deal service, and Pimp Your Screen, which lets users customize their device with backgrounds and other visual features, were the top apps in the lifestyle category. Netflix, the video streaming service, was the top app in the entertainment category, along with FatBooth, which lets users visualize how they might look with a few extra pounds. Palli said free apps generally receive more downloads, and many more developers are starting to offer free versions. "During 2011, we saw a big shift in strategy from a lot of paid app developers, which was to migrate from a straight paid app experience where you pay for the app up front to an in-app purchase or upgrade experience," he explained. "This way it's really compelling for the consumer because you can get started with the app and when they experience how good the app is, they can take the wallet out of their pocket and make the extra two taps to get the full features.
Angry Birds fly to Facebook
Angry Birds", the most-downloaded mobile app of 2011, was catapulted to the world of Facebook on Tuesday in a bid by its Finnish maker Rovio to get one billion people playing the addictive game. Fans were able to test the new Angry Birds Facebook app online Tuesday morning ahead of its official global launch in Jakarta, the world's most Facebook-connected city. "With the great success of the Angry Birds game on smartphone platforms, Rovio intends to reach more fans and be on every screen and every platform," Rovio Asia senior vice president Henri Holm said in a statement. "Therefore, the company developed Angry Birds on Facebook to reach more than 800 million Facebook users worldwide." In the game, players fling colourful and grumpy wingless birds from a slingshot into smarmy egg-stealing pigs. It has been downloaded more than 700 million times since it launched in 2009 and the birds have become a global phenomenon, featuring on a huge array of merchandise and in popular culture.
Angry tweets question Indian-origin winner of Miss America
Washington: Nina Davuluri, 24, had this to say after winning the Miss America pageant held in Atlantic City on September 15, 2013: "I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America." This sentiment was not shared by all Americans. "When her win was announced, Twitter immediately exploded with hateful tweets," says Buzzfeed. This is America, said those outraged by her win: Ms Davaluri, whose pageant platform was "celebrating diversity through cultural competency" and whose talent routine was a Bollywood dance performance, brushed aside the online racism, saying "I have to rise above that," she said. "I always viewed myself as first and foremost American." The native of Syracuse, New York wants to be a doctor, and is applying to medical school, with the help of a $50,000 scholarship she won as part of the pageant title. She is the second consecutive Miss New York to win the Miss America crown, succeeding Mallory Hagan. After the traditional frolic in the Atlantic City surf Monday morning, she will head to the scene of a devastating boardwalk fire in the New Jersey communities of Seaside park and Seaside Heights Monday afternoon. Her first runner-up was Miss California, Crystal Lee. Other top 5 finalists included Miss Minnesota, Rebecca Yeh; Miss Florida, Myrrhanda Jones, and Miss Oklahoma, Kelsey Griswold.
Fans angry with director
Angry fans of Ajith held protests in various theatres where Tirupathi was screened alleging that the director Perarasu has tried to overshadow their hero in the film by playing a role which has punch dialogues and stunt sequences. The angry fans have demanded the scenes to be chopped off from the movie. Meanwhile, rumors are abuzz that Perarasu has completed penning a script and titled his next venture Nattarasankottai, which may feature himself in the lead role.
Ajith's fans angry
A group of fans gathered at the actor's fans association office in Chennai on Sunday and allegedly shouted slogans against Thenappan and Bala. Even in Coimbatore, Madurai and Erode they reportedly held protests seeking apologies from Thenappan and Bala. It may be recalled that Ajith was assigned to act in Naan Kadavul. However at the last moment, the actor pulled out of the project and Bala announced that Arya would act instead of Ajith. Both Ajith and Bala said that they decided to part after mutual discussions. However the vernacular media has been carrying reports that Ajith was indeed threatened for pulling out of the movie. When Ajith was contacted, the actor maintained that he was not threatened and it was his personal decision to reject the offer.
