Da Vinci Code - Code is out

Tension gripped several theatres in Tamil Nadu on Friday following the release of the controversial film Da Vinci Code. The movie starring Tom Hanks received condemnation from Christians for it allegedly defames Jesus Christ. The State government too banned the release of the movie stating that it would result in law and order problem in Tamil Nadu. However upon the Madras High Court giving a go ahead to release the movie, Da Vinci Code made it to theatres in Tamil Nadu Friday. The movie was released in five theatres in Chennai and tight police security was provided in all the theatres following threats from several Christian organizations wanting to disrupt the screening. But the police needn't have worried. There were no protests at least on the first day of the screening. As it happened, even the response from the general public was anemic. Theatre owners, however, clarified that the weekend would see a better turnout.

"Mithun da's performance in DON MUTHUSWAMI is outstanding" - Aseem Samanta

During the start of the second schedule for Aseem Samanta directed film Don Muthuswami, Mithun Chakraborty had fallen sick with viral flu. Naturally he could not make it to the sets for 2 days. Says Aseem Samanta, "Since the dates of Hrishita Bhatt and Rohit Roy were committed for another film, no way could we extend the shooting. We thought that we will have to work out an additional schedule and arrange for everybody's dates again. This was going to delay the film by a minimum one month." But to the surprise of everybody, Mithun Chakraborty managed to come on location on the 3rd day. Although he still had fever, but he refused to cow down to fever. In any case, he is known for his professionalism. Still, to everybody's pleasant surprise, he shot the 3rd day's sequence and then he extended the shoot to finish off his portions for day one and day two also. "He had to shoot for almost 14 hours in the one day and he was still very weak, but he completed the schedule. The performance delivered was, as usual outstanding," gushes the director. Naturally this film is ready for release in record seven months time with 3rd week of May looking like the most probable timeline.

Vasco da Gama's Lost Ship Esmeralda Opens New Window on Age of Discovery

Marine archaeologists say they've found the earliest ship from Europe's Age of Discovery ever uncovered — the wreck of a vessel from Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama's brutal second armada to India in 1502. Experts called it a find of major importance that could change how historians view trade and warfare during a critical period in the development of Western civilization. The ship is believed to be the Esmeralda, which sank in a storm off the Omani island of Al Hallaniyah in May 1503, researchers said in a paper published in this week's edition of the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology (PDF). By more than 50 years, it's the earliest ship ever recovered from the era when Portuguese explorers opened the Western Hemisphere and dominated the Indian subcontinent. "If you consider that that pre-colonial period started on a major basis with Columbus, in 1492, this is just a decade after that," David Mearns, director of Blue Water Recoveries of Britain, which led the expedition, told the British newspaper The Guardian. The wreckage itself was discovered in 1998, but excavation didn't begin until 2013, and since then, researchers have recovered more than 2,800 artifacts that helped establish that it's the Esmeralda, including the stunning discovery of an Indio silver coin commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal for trade with India — a piece so rare that historians have dubbed it the "ghost coin."
