Gunday earns over Rs.40 crore in its opening weekend

Yash Raj Films’ latest offering “Gunday” has collected over Rs.40 crore in three days. It is expected to do well in the next weekend too, says a trade expert. Director Ali Abbas Zafar's action thriller, which released Feb 14, has minted Rs.43.93 crore, said a statement. The movie starring Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra “has managed to draw crowd to cinema halls", says Gautam Dutta, chief operating officer, PVR Cinemas. “It is one of the much-awaited films. The response is very good. The occupancy (over three days) was about 80 percent. The songs, genre and two young actors with Priyanka... everything is well taken up,” said Dutta. "We are positive about next weekend too," said Dutta. He also said that some people liked the first half of the film more than the second half. Irrespective of it, the response has been welcoming. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who watched "Gunday" at its Mumbai premiere, called it "an adrenaline-packed movie". "Gunday", made on an approximate budget of Rs.50 crore including promotions, reportedly hit over 2,000 screens across India.

Priyanka Chopra shooting for 'Gunday' cabaret number

Priyanka Chopra is playing the female lead in period drama "Gunday" and she is currently shooting for a cabaret dance sequence for the action-drama-cum-romance. The film's director Ali Abbas Zafar says he is using an original song. Set between 1971 to 1988 in Kolkata, the film deals with black marketing mafia men Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor). "We started shooting for the particular cabaret song three days ago in Mumbai and there is three more days to do. It's a fresh cabaret song and not a remix of any old song. It's a very big sort of cabaret song in the film," Zafar, who earlier wielded megaphone for "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan", said Sunday. Did you ask Priyanka to take reference from any legendary Bollywood actress for the song? "Not really. Actually, I have been doing my research for quite some time on Kolkata and I discovered Kolkata was high on glamour quotient since 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. In that way, Kolkata is quite western," said Zafar. The director has created a coal mine and informed that the last 30 days of shoot is left. "We have created a coal mine set and we are left to do a huge action sequence between Irrfan, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. Obviously, we can't shoot in real coal mine so we had to create the set for the period film," said Zafar.

Gunday to pay tribute to Yash Chopra

Ali Abbas Zafar's "Gunday" will pay tribute to late filmmaker Yash Chopra with a 60-second montage in the beginning of the film. Chopra died in 2012 and "Gunday" was the last script he had heard. It was Zafar's idea to include a tribute to the filmmaker, known for directing great movies like "Deewaar", "Kabhi Kabhie" and "Chandni". Chopra gave his inputs and suggestions to the director regarding the script of "Gunday". He told Zafar to shoot the coal mine scenes at the actual location and not recreate it here, which was also his dream during "Kaala Patthar", said a statement. "It was Ali Abbas Zafar's idea, he was very, very keen as this was Yashji's last script that he had heard. This was an emotional moment for Ali," said a source from Yash Raj Films, which has produced "Gunday" as well. Releasing Friday, the film features Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
