‘Jai ho’ Rahman at Golden Globe nominations again

It doesn’t get bigger than this for A.R. Rahman. The double Oscar winning Indian composer has bagged a Golden Globe nomination for Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours”, having already won the trophy once for the director’s mega sweep “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2009. This is the 44-year-old’s second flick at Hollywood’s second most prestigious annual movie prize after Boyle’s Mumbai-based multiple-Oscar award wining underdog drama “Slumdog Millionaire”. Rahman won two Oscars and a Golden Globe for his number “Jai ho” in the movie. The Chennai-based composer is competing in the same section as before – Original Score for a motion picture category – with the likes of Alexandre Desplat (”The King’s Speech”), Danny Elfman (”Alice in Wonderland”), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (”The Social Network”), and Hans Zimmer (”Inception”). Bollywood was on cloud nine with its leading musician’s feat. “AR Rahman nominated for Golden Globe for ‘127 Hours’ score. Marching to another Oscar?” tweeted filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. The soundtrack of “127 Hours” includes the popular song “If I Rise”, a collaboration between Rahman and pop star Dido. Starring “Spider-Man” star James Franco, the movie is a biopic about mountaineer Aron Ralston, who was trapped in a canyon in Utah for five days by a boulder that fell on his right arm and he freed himself by amputating the limb. Ralston recently even complimented the composer on his music in the film by sending him a hand-written note. It read: “For A.R, Thank you for bringing your amazing music to my story – if only I had your soundtrack in the canyon, I could’ve lasted another 127 hours. Best Wishes, A.R. (Aron Ralston).” Fondly called the Mozart of Madras, Rahman was honoured with a Padma Bhushan this year. The shy musician also has two gramophones on his shelf that he won at the 52nd Grammy Awards for his music in “Slumdog Millionaire”. The only defeat he had had was at this year’s Oscars ceremony when his number “Na Na” from his Hollywood debut venture “Couple’s Retreat” failed to win a nomination in the Best Original Song category at the gala.

'Jai Ho' makers wanted 'Xerox'

After using brand names like Zandu Balm in "Dabangg" and Fevicol in "Dabangg 2", the makers of Salman Khan's "Jai Ho" have come up with a peppy number called "Photocopy". However, their first choice was "Xerox". "Earlier, the word Xerox was decided to be used in the song but getting permission to use the brand name would have been time consuming, so we stuck to photocopy. I'm glad that the song has got very good response from the audience," Sohail Khan, director of the film, said in a statement. "Jai Ho" also features Tabu and Om Puri. It is slated to release Jan 24, 2014.

Will 'Jai Ho' crack Rs.300 crore code?

The stage is set for Salman Khan's "Jai Ho", his first release of the year. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh is confident that it will cross the Rs.300-crore-mark while Amod Mehra says though a bumper opening is assured, reaching Rs.200 crore could be "a Herculean task". Directed by Salman's brother Sohail, the film that focuses on corruption will hit more than 5,000 screens Friday. Producer Vashu Bhagnani, who still remembers "the stupendous opening" that his film with Salman "Biwi No.1" got, is confident that "'Jai Ho' would definitely open very well". "Salman has the full public support. His ardent fan-base would definitely go see the film. It should cross the 300-crore mark specially seeing the number of screens it's being released on," he added. In the last couple of years, Salman has hardly failed to impress the audiences and as a result most of his films such as "Dabangg", "Ek Tha Tiger" and "Dabangg 2" became blockbusters. "I saw the film at a trial. Both the pre and post interval halves have that jolt that makes you sit up and watch when you are least expecting any kind of upheaval. That is the USP. Salman's presence is 'ekdum dhamaakedar'," said another trade expert who doesn't want to be named. "My verdict. It'd be bigger than 'Ek Tha Tiger', but not as big as 'Dabangg'. Eros would find it hard to recover the money they paid Sohail for the film," he added. Taran Adarsh: "'Jai Ho' should open very, very well, thanks to Salman's star power and also his absence from the screen for an entire year. The craze for the film is building up with each passing day. As far as making Rs.300 crore goes, that would depend entirely on the strength of the content." Amod Mehra: "As Salman is enjoying such a huge fan-following, a bumper opening is assured. However, the promos and music are dull. Reaching Rs.200 crore may prove to be a Herculean task."

'Jai Santoshi Maa' creates a record

Though the 1970s version of 'Jai Santoshi Maa' sits high amidst the all time Bollywood blockbusters, the 21st century version has failed in a big way with unmentionable collections. But while doing it so, it has at least managed to create a record. Prompted by an early exit of the film from theatres with the festival season still on, the makers have gone ahead and unleashed the original VCDs of the film in 2 weeks flat. Though in overseas the original DVDs and VCDs do come out rather quickly for even successful films, in Indian markets it's a rare scenario to see such a quick release on home video. Now the million dollar question is - Will audience really buy the video to watch this devotional/dramatic flick at home?

A.R. Rahman having Jai Ho concerts in 16 world cities

Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) will be taking his “Jai Ho” concert worldwide, starting June 11 from New York (USA) and ending in London (United Kingdom) on July 26, according to reports. During this period, he will reportedly have live concerts in USA, Canada, Netherlands, France, Norway, and United Kingdom; covering the cities of New York, Atlantic City, Washington DC, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Glasgow, Manchester, and London. More concerts of this world tour will be announced in the future. Well known choreographer-director Amy Tinkham, who has worked on the concerts of the likes of Paul McCartney, Madonna, Britney Spears, Dixie Chicks, Motley Crue, etc., will reportedly be associated with Rahman’s concerts, which are said to include acrobatics, new technologies, fascinating dance arrangements, changing sets, LED screens, and global cast of dancers and musicians. It is termed as a “virtual journey through beauty, culture, and spirituality”. Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, commended Rahman for taking the Indian music to new heights and bringing respect and international recognition to Indian film music. Zed, who is chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, urged Government of India to launch some world-class conservatories in collaboration with major business houses to channelize the abundant musical talent of India. Rahman, who has reportedly recorded sales of over 300 million, was called “Mozart of Madras” by Time magazine. Rahman sees music “as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it” and for “creating harmony in troubled times”.
