Meanwhile Ajith starrer 'Billa', 'Kallori' and 'Mudhal Mudhal Mudhal Varai' have made it to the Indian Panorama in the non-commercial category.
Priyadharshan all set for Kanchipuram
Kanchipuram is famous for silk sarees. People from far off places throng the temple city to buy these silk sarees. But the plights of weavers who come out with these silk sarees are not rosy. This is the crux of the movie to be produced and directed by acclaimed director Priyadharshan. Priyadharshan, who had directed blockbusters in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil, makes a comeback in Tamil after a long gap. Since it is an off-beat theme demanding strong performance from its artistes, Priyadharshan has opted for Prakash Raj to don the lead role. Giving Prakash Raj able company would be Shreya Reddy. The latter had proved her acting skills in movies like Thimiru and Veyyil. With seasoned performers, Priyadharshan is confident of coming out with an engrossing tale. All the best Priyadharshan and his team.
Priyadharshan's Kanchivaram goes to Toronto
Director Priyadharshan's off-beat classic 'Kanchivaram' has been selected for screening at the coveted Toronto film festival. The movie would be screened on 12 September. The movie, written and directed by Priyadharshan features Prakash Raj and Shreya Reddy in the lead roles. Music is by M G Sreekumar. Speaking about the project, Priyadharshan says, 'The film is set in thick Kanchi silk weaving industry and tells the story of a man caught among the forces that be, the society he lives in and the conflict between one's adopted ideals and individual dreams'. It is a critical analysis of communism, which came to India in early 1920s, Priyadharshan says and adds, 'All these days I made films with my head, but 'Kanchivaram' is a film from my heart'. 'I have planned a commercial release in October', he says. The movie is set in 1920 till 1948. The film is an analysis by the director why the communism took a backseat all over the world. 'Those preach it, don't practice it', says Priyadharshan.
Priyadarshan's 'Kanchivaram' mesmerizes Toronto
Bollywood director Priyadarshan, known for churning out money-spinning comedies at breakneck speed, has won a completely new kind of fan following at the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival with a work that marks a break with his characteristic style. 'Kanchivaram' is an evocative but tragic tale of a pre-Independence Indian Silk Weaver in Kanchipuram. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the first rumblings of labor unionism in south India. 'I am really excited,' said Priyadarshan, who flew into town along with lead actor, Prakash Raj, to promote the new film. 'I've never made a film like this before and the response is overwhelming.' 'Kanchivaram' is a neatly crafted, visually lush film that has none of the ingredients that define the nature of Priyadarshan's recent outputs. The applause that the film is garnering here, he said, has made him enthusiastic to explore the possibility of attempting more offbeat films in the future. 'I can assure you that 'Kanchivaram' isn't going to be the only film of its kind that I will make,' he said. After its world premiere here, 'Kanchivaram' is due to travel to the Pusan Film Festival in South Korea. What's more, inquiries from several other major international festivals such as Palm Springs, San Francisco and Stuttgart among others have begun to pour in. 'I spent months interviewing weavers and people associated with the cooperative movement. I based my story and screenplay on my research,' he added. 'Kanchivaram' is Priyadarshan's fifth Tamil-language film. 'It had to be in Tamil for reasons of authenticity. It wouldn't have looked and sounded right in any other language,' he asserts.
Sriya Reddy reunites with 'Kanchivaram' team
The team behind National Award winning Tamil drama "Kanchivaram", which featured Prakash Raj and Sriya Reddy in the lead roles and was helmed by filmmaker Priyadarshan, are reuniting for a film in the language on a social cause. "When I did 'Kanchivaram', I was scared as hell because I was pitted against Prakash Raj, who is like a film institute of acting and was being directed by Priyadarshan. This time, I'm slightly scared but I'm sure it's going to be a much calmer experience," Sriya told. She says the film will be as sensitive as "Kanchivaram", and will address an issue that's rarely discussed. "It'll be a very sensible film. We're not at the liberty to talk about the issue yet," she said. Filmmaker Vijay, who is known for films such as "Thalaivaa" and Saivam", will be producing this project. Industry heavyweights such as cinematographer Santosh Shivan and art director Sabu Cyril are also part of the project. On the reuniting experience, Sriya said: "If you've followed my work, you'll realize I've only done films where I had something to offer. I've only worked in films where the heroines have something important to contribute. This film is going to be great in terms of learning. "Prakash Raj being one of the finest actors in our country, so to act alongside him will automatically make one perform while Priyadarshan knows exactly what he wants." The film, which is expected to go on floors next month, will be wrapped up in one quick schedule.
