The last of a huge pod of sperm and minke whales washed onto a southern Australian beach and nearby sandbank died despite an extensive operation to set it free, officials said Thursday. The 12-metre sperm whale died late Wednesday as Parks and Wildlife officials attempted to get it to the entrance of Macquarie Harbour, in southern Tasmania, where it got stuck on a sandbank as part of a mass beaching on Saturday. "We did everything possible to save this whale," said rescue coordinator Chris Arthur. "We were fortunate in that we were able to assist two whales to return to the open ocean on Sunday, but we were unable to save the sperm whales that remained in the harbour," he added. Twenty-two sperm whales died after washing onto nearby Ocean Beach, with two minke whales and another sperm whale perishing inside the harbour before Wednesday's final death, taking the toll to 26. Arthur said the beached whales would be left to break down on the sand, while the whales inside the harbour would be "deflated" so they could settle to decompose underwater. "We learn from every stranding and every stranding prepares us better for the next one," he added. Bad weather had forced the rescue operation to be called off on Tuesday. Seven sperm whales were saved after a similar stranding in the harbour in 2007 and rescuers had been confident of freeing the surviving mammal after managing to refloat and push two whales back out to sea over the weekend. Whale beachings are relatively common in Australia and they usually occur in the summer months, particularly around Tasmania, but scientists do not know why they happen.
Last week's movies
Out of the 4 releases of last Friday, only 'Woh Lamhe' managed to survive. Though the film had number of factors in its favor - it came from Vishesh Films banner, starred successful 'jodi' of Shiney and Kangana [Gangster], boasted of hit music by Pritam, had Mohit Suri ['Zeher' and 'Kalyug'] at the helm and generated some timely hype about Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi - it didn't really take the kind of start it deserved. The film did open to encouraging reviews but as has been repeated time and again, its timing wasn't all that perfect. As a result, the film managed to collect 4 crores in the first week, though it deserved a little better. As expected, Mumbai was best with a contribution of 80 lakhs with Delhi following it by some distance [50 lakhs]. The film is safe due to its low price and has good scope in DVD circuit and satellite channels, but theatrically it seems like an average earner at the maximum. Nevertheless, Mohit Suri can boast to be one of the rare directors to have his first three films working at the box office with each of them belonging to a different genre as an icing on the cake. Coming to 'Krishna' and 'Jai Santoshi Maa', one had expected the latter to work slightly better since its namesake film released in the 70s boasts of being one of the biggest super-hits of all time. Surprisingly in 2006, the film finds itself crashing in a big way with just over 15 lakhs coming in its first week. One of the biggest disasters of the year. 'Krishna' was a little better, though strictly on relative terms, because even it had collections just in the tune of 50 lakhs.

Last song being canned for 'Jagadam'
The last song for 'Jagadam' directed by Sukumar and produced by Adityababu on the banner of Aditya Arts. Isha is the female lead in this film is being canned on Ram and Monalisa under the choreography of Shankar. Producer Aditya Babu says, 'We are sure that this song would attract the youth very much. The film would reflect the directorial capability of Sukumar and would be quite novel. Instead of hacking and axing people, the film would depict the action scenes in a different way and the audiences would wonder whether action could be made on these lines. Ratnavelu is a great technician and his cinematography is worth watching. Devisri Prasad has given fantastic music to this film than 'Arya', his earlier film in the combination of Sukumar. We are planning to launch the audio on January 21 and release the film on February 14.'
