Out of the 4 releases of last Friday, only 'Woh Lamhe' managed to survive. Though the film had number of factors in its favor - it came from Vishesh Films banner, starred successful 'jodi' of Shiney and Kangana [Gangster], boasted of hit music by Pritam, had Mohit Suri ['Zeher' and 'Kalyug'] at the helm and generated some timely hype about Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi - it didn't really take the kind of start it deserved. The film did open to encouraging reviews but as has been repeated time and again, its timing wasn't all that perfect. As a result, the film managed to collect 4 crores in the first week, though it deserved a little better. As expected, Mumbai was best with a contribution of 80 lakhs with Delhi following it by some distance [50 lakhs]. The film is safe due to its low price and has good scope in DVD circuit and satellite channels, but theatrically it seems like an average earner at the maximum. Nevertheless, Mohit Suri can boast to be one of the rare directors to have his first three films working at the box office with each of them belonging to a different genre as an icing on the cake. Coming to 'Krishna' and 'Jai Santoshi Maa', one had expected the latter to work slightly better since its namesake film released in the 70s boasts of being one of the biggest super-hits of all time. Surprisingly in 2006, the film finds itself crashing in a big way with just over 15 lakhs coming in its first week. One of the biggest disasters of the year. 'Krishna' was a little better, though strictly on relative terms, because even it had collections just in the tune of 50 lakhs.
"The Last Monk" being screened at MAMI
Plexus Films and Access Entertainment's maiden feature film in English, "The Last Monk", which was acclaimed at the Rotterdam film festival recently, is now being screened at the forthcoming MAMI film festival in Mumbai on 24th March. "The Last Monk" has been directed by Sudipto Sen, assistant to legendary filmmaker G.Aravindan. He has made many documentaries including "The Other Wealth", which won National Award for Best Environmental Film in 1995. It was also screened at all the major international film festivals. "The Last Monk" is a maiden venture marking his debut as a feature film director. This unique venture in the midst of contemporary Indian cinema scenario is slated to be the beginning of a new genre. As an Indian feature film in English, "The Last Monk" ventures into the hitherto uncharted territories of cultural Buddhism through breath-taking landscape of Ladakh on Indo-Tibetan plateau and a radical understanding of male-female relationship, sexuality and beyond. "The Last Monk" is the story of Swapna. Swapna's role is enacted by Rachna Shah, who has already worked in many prestigious films including Sonu Sisupal's "Kaalachakram" (Tamil), Susant Mishra's "Dharini" (Hindi), Santosh Sivan's ""Navrasa" (Tamil) and Ashok Vishwanathan's Andhkaroor Shabd - Sounds of Darkness (Bengali). Well known theatre actor and model Jimeesh Gandhi plays Pushkar, the material strength of Swapna. Sonam Stobgias Gorky, from NSD, plays Sonik, the main protagonist of the film.
Fanaa - Last major musical score of Jatin Lalit
Fanaa, upcoming flick from the house of YRF, is special not just because of great production values and the Aamir Khan-Kajol combo. It is also special as it has some of the last songs composed by the composer duo of Jatin Lalit who have now split. Jatin Lalit, who gave some great music for YRF in films like DDLJ, Mohabbatein and Hum Tum, would be taking a bow as a duo once their album 'Fanaa' hits the stand. They do have a couple of small pending releases that may happen later but for all their die hard fans, 'Fanaa' in all probability would be their last and final call. Truly an end of a great era that witnessed dozens of melodious 'n' priceless gems. Here is looking forward to 'Fanaa'!
THE LAST LEAR is a powerful film
Over the last 32 years, the Toronto International Film Festival has grown into one of the most important film festivals of the world, showcasing the cream of world cinema and is ranked today just behind Cannes and Berlin. It is an honor for not only the makers, but for the entire nation to be present on such a revered platform. Says Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee (CEO of Planman Motion Pictures) whose THE LAST LEAR has been selected to be showcased at the festival, "The Last Lear is a powerful Indian English film, mounted and styled in a way that it appeals to the global audience. We are planning and programming the campaign in such a way that it becomes a truly international presentation from India." He adds, "We can assure that the Toronto Gala Premiere will just be the beginning of an ambitious original Indian presentation"
Is Vivaah Sooraj Barjatyas Last Chance?
It's disheartening to note that the man who has given two of the biggest hits of Hindi Cinema is awaiting the release of his next film with very little buzz doing the rounds. Sooraj Barjatya is an institution whom even Karan Johar considered as his guru. But the maker of 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' is almost a non-entity as 'Vivaah' is up for release. Starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, this one ought to have been a biggie but with its music being a total disappointment, people are more keen on 'Apna Sapna Money Money' (Releasing the same day) than 'Vivaah'. Sooraj's last film 'Main Prem Deewani' was a loser while the one before 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' couldn't repeat the magic of his earlier two blockbusters either. Some people say that his style of storytelling is obsolete and he needs to reinvent himself if he wants to remain in the hunt of the big league. What goes against him is the fact that his hero Shahid Kapoor, in spite of being a fine actor and a terrific dancer, can not be bracketed with Salman, Hrithik or Abhishek (His earlier heroes). Moreover Shahid-Amrita pairing has given several duds including 'Wah Life Ho To Aisi' and 'Shikhar'. It seems an uphill task for Sooraj Barjatya's fledgling fortunes with 'Vivaah'. The story of engagement to marriage has to be really out of the box to click in an era of 'Rang De Basanti', 'Dhoom' and 'Munnabhai' where innovative storytelling or scintillating action is the order of the day.
1:40 Ki Last Local postponed
Abhay v/s Abhay clash has been averted. While his 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd' was confirmed for February 23 release, off late there were also indications that his sole lead film '1:40 Ki Last Local' would also arrive on the same day. With none less than 6 films trying to find screen space on the last Friday of February, it would only have been a sane decision for some films to move out of the race and arrive later. Director Sanjay Khanduri's debut vehicle '1:40 Ki Last Local' has taken a lead in that and has now been postponed by at least a couple of months. The film is aiming for an April release or even later. A story that unfolds in one single night, the film stars Neha Dhupia opposite Abhay.
