John Abraham says his next production "Madras Cafe" is truly the kind of cinema that defines the work he wants to do in the film industry. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, who also helmed John's production debut "Vicky Donor", the movie is said to be a gritty thriller. "This would define what I stand for in terms of cinema. I want films that I produce to have credible content and 'Madras Cafe' is that film," John tweeted Thursday. The movie also features Nargis Fakhri. Its first look features John in a rugged look, with a revolver in his hand. Nargis also sports an intense look in the poster.
'Madras Cafe' awarded U/A certificate
Shoojit Sircar is relieved after his "Madras Cafe" got a clearance from the censor board with a U/A certificate. Sircar said: "When I was making 'Vicky Donor', I was very worried about the censors. I thought, it's a film that deals with sperms, which will get it an A-certificate, but thank god things went well." "Vicky Donor", which was actor John Abraham's maiden production venture, released with a U/A certificate and the audiences liked the film so much that the Rs.5 crore project earned Rs.45 crore at the box office. "The film didn't look vulgar and sent across the message perfectly. Luckily, my next film 'Madras Cafe', which has so much of action has got a clean nod from the censors and has got a U/A certificate," said the director. "Madras Cafe", a political-thriller, deals with terrorism and civil war and was reportedly shot in Sri Lanka and India. Sircar requested the audience's indulgence for enjoying the sequence of events in his forthcoming offering. He said: "I would request the audience not to leave their brains at home. Get your brains and do a bit of research before you come to watch the film." Featuring John, who has also produced the film, and Nargis Fakhiri, the film is slated for an Aug 23 release.
'Madras Cafe' work of fiction: John Abraham
John Abraham admits that "Madras Cafe" is based on the Sri Lankan conflict in the 1980s, but states that the story is a work of fiction. "I can say that this is a work of fiction, but the backdrop is definitely about the Tamil conflict and about what happened in Sri Lanka," the 40-year-old said here Tuesday at a football event. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, "Madras Cafe" also stars Nargis Fakhri and hits theatres Aug 23. John states that everyone must watch "Madras Cafe". "There are a lot of events that will come to life and we have presented it in a commercial way. Our youngsters don't know about what happened in the late 1980s and the early 1990s," added the actor, who is not only playing the lead role in the political thriller, but has also produced it. "I don't know whether it's a good film or a bad film, but it's a film that everyone must see because it will give you an insight into what India is about," he added.
'Madras Cafe' earnings skyrocketed: John Abraham
Actor-producer John Abraham is thrilled by the box office collection of his second production venture “Madras Cafe”. He thanked everyone for "putting faith in my vision for cinema to get progressive". The audience and even fellow filmmakers have described the film, which is about the civil war in Sri Lanka, as an "intelligent" attempt. If reports are to be believed, the movie was made on a budget less than Rs.10 crore. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, it earned over Rs.20 crore in its opening weekend. “I thank all of you for putting faith in my vision for cinema to get progressive. Collections on this film have skyrocketed. A big thank you,” John, who has acted and co-produced the "Madras Cafe", posted on Twitter.
John Abraham loses weight for 'Madras Cafe'
John Abraham, who is known for his perfect body, had to shed weight for his forthcoming film "Madras Cafe". The film is a political-thriller and has been directed by Shoojit Sircar. The story deals with terrorism and civil war and was reportedly shot in Sri Lanka and India. "I had asked John to lose weight for this film and he did that. If he stands in a crowd he should not stand out he should look like one of them as he is not hero in the film. Heroism of the film is the content and not John," Sircar said. "You will see a new John in this film," he added. Sircar, who has worked with John in his previous project "Vicky Donor", says that they now share a great relationship. "Now we are good friends its a good relationship. We are planning for few more films together. We want to take this relationship ahead he never interferes in my work and its vise versa. I don't know marketing so he takes care of it," he said. "Madras Cafe" is slated to release August 23.
John delivers subtle performance in 'Madras Cafe'
Film director Shoojit Sircar says he believes in extracting subtle performances from his actors, and for "Madras Cafe", he has done the same for John Abraham's character. John plays the lead in the movie, which is also produced by him. "Sometimes we make the performances loud in our Hindi films, but my films have subtle performances, so I have kept him (John) under tone in all the performances (in the film). You will not feel that he is acting, I have kept him in the real zone," Sircar said here in an interview. "To do that was not tough as we had rehearsed a lot, discussed a lot and I think we have managed in doing that," he added. The film is based on terrorism and civil war and John plays an army officer, who is appointed by RAW to conduct covert operations in Sri Lanka. About his inputs for the character, Sircar said: "I had to give him knowledge on this subject and tell him how to perform as I believe in subtle performances." Slated to release Aug 23, the film features Nargis Fakhri as the female lead.
