The election to the Tamil Film Producers Council is over and new office-bearers have taken charge and even had an audition with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Now it is time that they get into business. They should address several issues affecting the survival of the industry at a rapid pace. First and foremost, several films have been lying in the cans due to financial constraints. Secondly, the long pending demand of the producers to cut the soaring salary of the actors. The new team has stressed that efforts would be taken to address the issue. Thirdly, the problem involved in obtaining No - Objection Certificates from Animal Welfare Board in case of using animals in their films. Over two dozen films are still awaiting clearance from the Animal Welfare Board which eventually delayed its release. A section of producers hope that these issues would be addressed at the earliest by the team headed by Rama Narayanan.
Tamil Cinema - Oldies get a new life
Suddenly revising old blockbusters is the name of the game. Bollywood has made it almost a new genre. Sholay, Don and many other classical hits of the past are being remade with a new paradigm. Even the neighbouring Telugu film industry saw Nagarjuna's hit Shiva (Udhayam in Tamil) being revisited as Shiva 2006. Naturally, such a phenomenon was waiting to be experimented in Tamil. And steps are afoot in this direction. Among the films that are to be 'remade' are Rajinikanth's cult classics like Thee, Billa. Now who will play these roles and who will direct the new versions is a moot thing. But Sujatha Cine Arts that made these originals themselves are remaking them.
Tamil Cinema - A good season
It all happens in a torrent for the Tamil film industry. It maybe good or bad, things come in a heap. This season it has been one of good things. It is some time since Tamil cinema saw so many hits in one single stretch. But the times are positive now, or so it seems. Just look at the offerings that we had over the last two months or so. Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi, Unakkum, Enakkum, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Em Magan, Sillunnu Oru Kaadhal, Thimuru, Perarasu. All of them have been classified big blockbusters and have emerged hugely successful. Let the good run continue.
Tamil MA starts rolling
Tamil MA is one of the highly talked about movies in the industry now. With Jeeva making special efforts to look different, the movie is believed to be very revolutionary in its concept. To be directed by Ram, the film has Jeeva in a menacing beard and a thick bespectacled look. The movie is about the fate of Tamil graduates in Tamil Nadu. It is a very sensitive and serious subject and deserves all the backing. Quite fittingly, the film started rolling from today, since today is the birthday of Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar, the great Tamil poet.
Tamil is the title
With the State government announcing tax exemption for movies titled in Tamil, several production houses and directors immediately opted for Tamil titles to avail the benefit. Going a step further, some directors even chose to name their films after 'Tamil.' Vijay's forthcoming movie to be directed by Bharathan has been titled Azhagiya Tamil Magan Ivan. Meanwhile Jeeva's movie to be directed by a debutant Ram is named Tamil M.A. Director Rajakumaran, (husband of actor Devayani), will be commencing his next directorial venture early next month. To be produced by Devayani, the film would feature Rajakumaran himself in the lead role. The movie is titled Thirumathi Tamil. Rajakumaran's last directorial venture was Kadhaludan which starred Murali and Devayani in the lead roles.

The release also added that Simbu, Bharath, Arya, Prakash Raj, Jeeva, Sneha, Reema Sen, Nila and Shobana would participate in the function among others. Various cultural shows are also being planned as part of the event.
