Dilip Kumar was the last super star
Amitabh Bachchan may be respected the world over as the biggest Bollywood star but his actor-politician wife Jaya feels “Dilip Kumar was the last super star”. “I don’t believe in super stars. Anyway, I think there are no super stars now. Dilip Kumar was the last,” said Jaya during an interaction with women journalists here. Jaya said among the current lot of Bollywood actors she has a special bond with Shah Rukh Khan. “I have a special bond with Shah Rukh as I played his mother in a film (”Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham”),” Jaya added. Asked if Shah Rukh was better than Amitabh, she said: “Of course not… you are asking a wife.”
"The Last Monk" being screened at MAMI
Plexus Films and Access Entertainment's maiden feature film in English, "The Last Monk", which was acclaimed at the Rotterdam film festival recently, is now being screened at the forthcoming MAMI film festival in Mumbai on 24th March. "The Last Monk" has been directed by Sudipto Sen, assistant to legendary filmmaker G.Aravindan. He has made many documentaries including "The Other Wealth", which won National Award for Best Environmental Film in 1995. It was also screened at all the major international film festivals. "The Last Monk" is a maiden venture marking his debut as a feature film director. This unique venture in the midst of contemporary Indian cinema scenario is slated to be the beginning of a new genre. As an Indian feature film in English, "The Last Monk" ventures into the hitherto uncharted territories of cultural Buddhism through breath-taking landscape of Ladakh on Indo-Tibetan plateau and a radical understanding of male-female relationship, sexuality and beyond. "The Last Monk" is the story of Swapna. Swapna's role is enacted by Rachna Shah, who has already worked in many prestigious films including Sonu Sisupal's "Kaalachakram" (Tamil), Susant Mishra's "Dharini" (Hindi), Santosh Sivan's ""Navrasa" (Tamil) and Ashok Vishwanathan's Andhkaroor Shabd - Sounds of Darkness (Bengali). Well known theatre actor and model Jimeesh Gandhi plays Pushkar, the material strength of Swapna. Sonam Stobgias Gorky, from NSD, plays Sonik, the main protagonist of the film.
THE LAST LEAR is a powerful film
Over the last 32 years, the Toronto International Film Festival has grown into one of the most important film festivals of the world, showcasing the cream of world cinema and is ranked today just behind Cannes and Berlin. It is an honor for not only the makers, but for the entire nation to be present on such a revered platform. Says Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee (CEO of Planman Motion Pictures) whose THE LAST LEAR has been selected to be showcased at the festival, "The Last Lear is a powerful Indian English film, mounted and styled in a way that it appeals to the global audience. We are planning and programming the campaign in such a way that it becomes a truly international presentation from India." He adds, "We can assure that the Toronto Gala Premiere will just be the beginning of an ambitious original Indian presentation"
The look matters for THE LAST LEAR
THE LAST LEAR sees Amitabh Bachchan play an actor for the first time ever! For that the look in the film is distinct and new not just for him for everyone. Amitabh Bachchan's look is one that he has never before been seen in, Arjun Rampal gets an urban look that he hasn't got before either on the ramp or on screen, and Preity, for the first time, gets to play a modern Indian woman, replete with saris reminding one of Rekhas looks in Silsila. Coming back to the uniqueness of his role, it is strange that the biggest living superstar of Indian cinema, who has played everything from a Coolie to a Don, from a Sharabi to a Jaadugar, has never really played an actor! Also, this would be the superstars' first-ever full length English language film. Says Rituparno Ghosh, director of the film, "It was a delight working with Amitda. All this while I have been hearing that he is a thorough professional. But now I realize that it was only a partial description of what he is. Amitda brings in so much warmth, sincerity and genuineness in his professionalism that the experience is truly endearing and enjoyable." And how about the rest of the starcast in the film, "Preity, Arjun and Shefali have also put in extremely sincere efforts into the film. The performances are indeed brilliant!" Shot extensively outdoors around Kolkata and in the scenic mountains of Mussoorie, quite a palette this is! The film is produced by Arindam Chaudhuri of Planman Motion Pictures.
