London welcomes WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR

Shyam Benegal's film to be screened at the upcoming film festival on Oct 25th & 26th. The prestigious London Film Festival is all geared up to extend a warm welcome to veteran film-maker Shyam Benegal's latest offering - Welcome to Sajjanpur. Presented by UTV SpotBoy set to release on September 19, 2008 in India, the film is a delightful satirical take on life in contemporary rural India and will feature in the competition section of World Cinema at the Festival. This would also be the UK and European Premiere of the film. London Film Festival will be held from Oct 15-30 at London and 'Welcome to Sajjanpur', featured in the competition section will play on the 25th of October at 12.45pm at OWE1 and on the 26th at 16.45pm at Waterman's Art Centre. Welcome to Sajjanpur revolves round Mahadev, one of the few educated young men from Sajjanpur. Gifted with a flair for words. His ambition is to be a novelist. But life-circumstances demand that he eke out a living by writing letters. So, he sits next to the post office and writes letters for all and sundry. His letter-writing is persuasive and powerful and that makes him popular with the largely non-literate population of the town. Soon Mahadev uses his talent to manipulate people with amusing and sometimes not so amusing results. 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' is an entertaining, musical and comic interpretation of characters and events that are at once hilarious and poignant. "Welcome to SAJJANPUR is a journey to the real India and shares with you some harsh and some not so harsh reality of that India. It also brings alive the simplicity and the beauty of the heartland which is far removed from the city life. Its Mr. Benegal's supreme and uncorrupted storytelling style that makes you thoroughly enjoy the ride to this India." Vikas Bahl, COO UTV Spotboy. Welcome to Sajjanpur starring Shreyas Talpade, Ravi Kishan, Divya Datta, Amrita Rao and others follows on the trail of other Benegal films which were screened at the London Film Festival. These include path-breaking ventures like, Manthan, Kondura, Mandi, Trikaal, Susman, Suraj ka Saatwaan Ghoda and Samar.

Akshay Kumar brings changes to WELCOME

Those who've heard the soundtrack of Welcome know that the lyrics of the title song go, "Welcome, Welcome To The Party, Welcome...." But on watching the promos on television, one sees the inclusion of the word Christmas: "Welcome, Welcome To The Christmas Party, Welcome...." It was Akshay Kumar's idea to orient the fun-filled number towards the Christmas season when this film is appropriately releasing. After this was discussed with director Aneez Bazmee and producer Firoz Nadiadwala, Wajid of Sajid-Wajid was asked to come in and make the minor addition of Christmas, which has been retained for the film's on-air promotion and in the final print as well! Coincidentally, the Insha Allah song in the film has also released on air weeks before Eid, on which day the film releases in cinemas worldwide. Remarks Akshay, "Welcome is a film about fun, frolic and laughter. It's a film about celebration and we agreed that it would be nice to incorporate the Christmas angle in the title track to make it even more topical and relevant to the festive season." Welcome releases on December 20 by Indian Films through Studio 18.

Anil Kapoor - Nana Patekar: From PARINDA to WELCOME!

While WELCOME will be Akshay Kumar's fourth massive comedy in 2007, the film is important to Anil Kapoor for a number of reasons as well. While it is common knowledge that Anil Kapoor and Feroz Khan have reunited on screen after 21 years in WELCOME (their last outing being JAANBAAZ), it is also true that this is also Anil's first film with Nana Patekar after 19 years! The two powerhouse actors were last seen playing adversaries in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's critically acclaimed, PARINDA, which released in 1989. There was talk of a problem between the two on the sets of PARINDA after which they reportedly refused to feature together in a number of projects that were offered to them. Producer Firoz Nadiadwala and director Aneez Bazmee brought the two together as brothers in WELCOME after a gap of two decades. Remarks a source, "It was hard to bring Anil & Nana back together for WELCOME but it's all happened for the good. Their brilliant screen chemistry in the film has to be seen to be believed." WELCOME releases worldwide on December 20, 2007. It is an Indian Films Release through Studio 18.
