A WEDNESDAY continues to be first choice

The unthinkable has happened. In spite of biggies like DRONA and KIDNAP hitting the screens over an extended last weekend, A WEDNESDAY has quietly emerged as the preferred choice of cine-goers as the week progressed. As per the reports that have just come on, at leading multiplexes, average occupancy of screens featuring A WEDNESDAY is currently ahead of DRONA and KIDNAP. While A WEDNESDAY was at #2 on Wednesday (just after KIDNAP), the Dussehra holiday saw A WEDNESDAY leading the charge and ruling from the top with KIDNAP at #2, WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR at #3 and DRONA at #4. Confirms Sheetal Bhatia, co-producer of A WEDNESDAY, "Yes, it's true. A WEDNESDAY has indeed scored better than all the new and existing releases. I have confirmed reports from distributors who have been ecstatic with the kind of response A WEDNESDAY is fetching week after week. This week too, after the weekend saw DRONA and KIDNAP leading the charge, A WEDNESDAY has turned out to be a fore runner when it comes to the audience choice. Now it's average screen occupancy is the best amongst all and the trend is not just restricted to Mumbai but all over the country." The film saw some decrease in show count in the week gone by due to massive release of DRONA and KIDNAP. Does he anticipate an increase in the week to come? "Since HELLO is the sole release of the week, exhibitors may choose to increase the count. However, it all boils down to number of people who see the film. As long as there is good average w.r.t screen occupancy, it should not matter", says Sheetal. Neeraj Pandey, director of A WEDNESDAY is not surprised though that the film has been continuing to do so well week after week. "The film is of the people and for the people; I knew that it would strike a chord with them in a big way and the results are there for everyone to see. The film has stayed quite consistent over last 5 weeks and I sincerely believe that the trend would continue for many more weeks", comments Neeraj. Jimmy Sheirgill is ecstatic too that his film has crossed the 10 crore mark at the box office and is still continuing. "All because of the excellent word of mouth that the film is carrying. It has been one of the most successful films of my career and easily the most appreciated critically. TAHAAN comes close but A WEDNESDAY does take the lead. I was super confident about the film and though we all had to wait for a while (the film was completed for almost 8 months before UTV released it this September), it was all worth it after all", concludes Jimmy in a relaxed tone.

"It's very important for us to come forward and help A WEDNESDAY" - Anupam Kher

After striking a chord with its sensitive story line with 'Mumbai Meri Jaan', UTV Motion Pictures is all set this time to release a thriller, 'A Wednesday' on September 5, 2008 worldwide, which deals with the effects of terrorism on society. Directed by first time director Neeraj Pandey, the film brings together, the two icons of Indian film industry, Naseeruddin Shah & Anupam Kher, on the big screen after a gap of more than a decade. After earning appreciation from Chief Minster of Gujarat Mr. Narendra Modi and Mumbai police team- Mr. Rakesh Maria, Mr. Javed Ahmed, Mr. A N Roy and officials from the ATS (Anti Terrorist Squad) had to say the same for the film last week. UTV hosted a special screening of 'A Wednesday' for Chief Minister of Delhi Ms. Sheila Dixit and Union Minister of State Mr. Shivraj Patil, on 3rd September. The Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi -Tajendra Khanna watched the film earlier this week. The leader of opposition-Mr. L K Advani will watch the film in the coming days. Debutant director Neeraj Pandey turns the grim reality of terrorism into an engaging game of cat - and - mouse played between a master blaster (Naseruddin Shah) and a senior cop (Anupam Kher). The film presents yet another heart wrenching drama in its own unique way- 'A Wednesday', a film that tells the story of certain events that unfold between 2 and 6 pm on a particular Wednesday - events which do not exist in any record but which deeply effect the lives of those involved including the cops, politicians and the public. "It's very important for us actors to come forward and help a film that's done with sincerity of purpose and has got a message behind it," says Mr. Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah plays the terrorist while Anupam plays a police commissioner, who is all set to stop Naseer's terror activities. The film also stars Jimmy Shergill, Aamir Bashir and Deepal Shaw.

Huge demand results in shift of theaters for A WEDNESDAY

Now this is clearly unprecedented. Never before can one remember an instance of a film's print being transported from one venue to another due to heavy demand amongst audience. However, this has indeed happened in case of A WEDNESDAY which saw such a huge turnaround of crowds that the theater authorities had to pronto take action and move the film to another theater next door. This happened yesterday for 9:00 PM show in Mumbai where the film was running at Galaxy theater. This single screen theater is situated in a complex where Gaiety and Gemini are also co-located. Galaxy comes with occupancy of around 700 people whereas Gaiety is bigger as it can accommodate around 1100 people. So huge was the demand for A WEDNESDAY that Galaxy, which was showing houseful board, had to move the print of the film to Gaiety so that they could keep the heavy crowd under control. HIJACK, which was running in Gaiety, was immediately shifted to Galaxy. Confirms Anjum Rizvi, one of the producers of A WEDNESDAY, "Yes, what you hear is indeed true. I was informed by the theater authorities late in the night that they had to take this step due to huge demand for the film. They couldn't send back hundreds of people who were patiently waiting to catch the last show of the film. They didn't have any choice but to request the theater next door to swap the prints." Jimmy Sheirgill continues to be elated with the response to the film, "I have always maintained that this is one film which would continue to grow with every passing week. Imagine people turning out at a single screen theater in the middle of the week for the night show and getting the house full board on. We continue talking about a particular film being made for multiplexes or only urban centers. I am glad that A WEDNESDAY is breaking that myth. It is working across single screens and multiplexes, in A, B as well as C centers. That's the hallmark of a quality product." On a parting note, he adds, "This one is truly a film of the people, for the people and of course by the people. The reasons behind the film's immense popularity is the fact that every countryman is able to relate to it's theme. Neeraj Pandey's execution has only made it simpler for all us to get the message and also be entertained." As per reports from the makers, this small budgeted film has already made close to 2.5 crore from the opening weekend. With the kind of response that the film is generating, it won't be surprising if it touches 5 crores at the end of first week. Stay tuned as we bring you further updates about this small film which is en route to turning into a big success.

A.R. Rehman composes for 'Provoked'

His 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' may have turned out to be a disappointment, as far as its music sales are concerned but his 'Rang De Basanti' has more than compensated with consistent sales over the months inspite of a slow beginning. Now his next BIG release is the musical score of 'PROVOKED', an international film by Jag Mundhra starring Aishwarya Rai in a central role. On catching a sneak peak of the film's music, one just can't help but salute the master in A.R. Rehman who has come up with a poignant, soul-stirring and a thoughtful score. Suiting the mood of the film, the score has a painful feel to it and promises to enhance the proceedings as a part of the narrative.
