Though more interested in craft of acting than the perks that come with it, actor Adil Hussain also has monetary concerns. "When my wife Kristen was full blown pregnant, I had just Rs.3000 in the account. I was teaching theatre at the National School of Drama (NSD) then as a visiting faculty. Even as we were contemplating how we will make it, I got a call from the producer of 'Gangor', who wanted to cast me because Irrfan had left the film. I asked them to deposit this much amount in my account by this time and after that I didn't have to look back. Thankfully, it turned out to be a good script," Adil told a national daily. He added, "The way industry is offering me police officer roles, I am in danger of becoming the next Ifthikhar. I don't want to. I am happy driving my Wagon R. In fact, I have told NSD that if they pay me well I would like to spend six months teaching." With 'Robot-2', 'Force-2' and 'Commando-2' to provide him financial stability, Adil has decided to go slow on films. "No matter how interesting and how intense are roles in films it doesn't really push you towards breaking the boundaries intensely enough, consistently enough. If I am playing Othello I am rehearsing for six months, six hours a day. So I am acting. On a film set I am there for 12 hours but I am practically acting for five to six minutes in that 12-hour schedule. If you count your work from action to cut the day's work is of five minutes. And rest of the time I am waiting to act. Of course, I am being paid well. That's why I can offer guests coffee and dry fruits but in the process I am getting bored." He added, "During 'Ishqiya', Naseer sahib said that this was the first time he discussed acting with a fellow actor on a film set. I was shocked." The catalyst came on the sets of 'Dobara' where somebody gave Lisa Ray and him a play called 'Annapurna' to read. "I felt refreshed and realised that I am missing the fun of acting. So this year, I am returning to Shakespeare with 'The Tempest'. Director Roysten Abel is going to interpret it."
Adil Hussain-starrer 'The Violin Player' wins top award in Durban
Ad filmmaker Bauddhayan Mukherji's 'The Violin Player', starring Adil Hussain, has won the Best Feature Film at the 37th Durban International Film Festival. Also starring Bengali actor Ritwick Chakraborty, 'The Violin Player' was the only Indian feature in the competition at the recently concluded festival. The jury described the film as "a seductive and mysterious tale of a violin player’s mundane life, and an interesting take on how chance encounters are almost predestined". 'The Violin Player' is the story of one day in the life of a Bollywood session violinist who finds expression in an unlikely place. The day unfolds to reveal startling truths about music, art, life and survival. The film is produced by Monalisa Mukherji under the banner of Little Lamb Films. When asked about the journey of the film, director Bauddhayan Mukherji said in a statement: "The journey of 'The Violin Player' is just beginning. As far as Durban is concerned, for us filmmakers, a festival like this is like the Olympics where one gets to represent one's country. Hence, a win here makes it sweeter as you end up winning laurels not for the film, not for yourself, but for India."
Adil Hussain on meeting Rajinikanth at the sets of 2 point 0
Talented artist Adil Hussain, who is a part of Shankar-Rajinikanth’s 2.0 was recently in the city to shoot his portions when he met Superstar Rajinikanth. He talks exclusively to behindwoods about this meeting: “It was such a humbling experience. I did not have an idea Rajini sir was coming because on that day, he did not have a shoot. He just dropped by. I was in my van. An AD told me- ‘Rajini sir wants to meet you. He was to come to your van’. I said- Whaaat? No way. I will come to see him. He was on the fourth floor in the location. I left instantly and on the way the AD said that Rajini sir wanted to know who was shooting for the day and when my name was mentioned, he had expressed his desire to meet me and asked if he can come and see me. I had heard so many nice things about Rajini sir from my friends who had worked with him, like for instance Radhika (Apte). She has told me beautiful things about him. He matched up to my idea of him whose feet are firmly on the ground in spite of him being a legend. He enquired about me and also told that he loved my work in English Vinglish. I was completely taken up by his charm and aura. I told him that before we even go up further in our discussion, let me take a picture with him, because my friends will kill me if I didn’t. Then we chatted on for a while about the film. After that, he had a discussion with director Shankar and I excused myself. I was totally totally totally bowled over by his humility and affection that he showers upon people. This is such a rare quality that I have seen in a very few people. Ang Lee (Life of Pi director) is one of them. Every actor in India can be inspired by the way that Rajinikanth leads his life".
Rajinikanth doesn't care about his appearance: Adil Hussain
Adil Hussain, who is sharing screen with Rajinikanth in Tamil actioner '2.0', is all praise for the superstar. The 'Life of Pi' star said that the superstar is humble and doesn't care about his appearance which is "very inspiring". Adil began shooting the film earlier this week in Chennai. Though he is yet to act with the superstar, he has only good words to say about the star, who is lovingly called 'Thalaiva'. × "I have been watching his (Rajinikanth) films since childhood and I am fascinated by his action. I've heard from people who have closely worked with him and some of his relatives that he is an amazing human being. So I know a lot about his humility which I think is more interesting," quoted Adil, the brand ambassador of the upcoming fashion gala North East India Fashion Week. "Just to meet this person who is hugely popular... He is humble and doesn't care how he looks like in everyday life which is very inspiring. He doesn't give a damn about it. He is an actor and he plays his characters and does a good job," said Adil, who hails from Assam. However, the 'English Vinglish' famed did not give out much about his role in '2.0'. "I can't talk about my role in the film. I will go back to the film's shooting in Chennai this month. I am not sure about the exact dates. They took my dates in February, but Chennai floods happened, so they are organising dates again," he said.
