Atress Bipasha Basu, who made her debut with the 2001 film 'Ajnabee', has credited filmmakers Abbas-Mustan and their brother Hussain Burmawala for her 'brilliant start' in the Hindi film industry. The 'Raaz' actress took to instagram and shared a photograph from her wedding reception held on April 30 here. In the photograph Bipasha is seen posing with her actor-husband Karan Singh Grover, Abbas-Mustan and Hussain Burmawala, who were synchronized in white. "Hussain Bhai, the reason am here today. I love them and owe my brilliant start in this business to them entirely," Bipasha captioned the image. The 'Jism' actress also mentioned that the filmmaker trio and Karan matched the theme. Bipasha and Karan's wedding reception was attended by a string of stars including Bollywood A-listers like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.
‘Raaz’ still close to my heart: Bipasha
Dusky actress Bipasha Basu, who entered Hindi filmdom with suspense thriller “Ajnabee”, says her second film “Raaz” is closer to her heart. ” ‘Raaz’ is very close to me because it got me into acting. ‘Ajnabee’ was the first film, but after doing ‘Raaz’ I figured out that I want to be an actress,” Bipasha said. In a career of more than eight years, the actress has worked in films of various genres, including “Jism”, “No Entry”, “Corporate”, “Dhoom 2″, “Bachna Ae Haseeno” and “Lamhaa” among others
I want to do action: Bipasha Basu-Interview
Bipasha Basu is itching to do action roles. While her latest film “Aakrosh” is about honour killings where she plays her most fragile character yet, the actress says in real life she is fit enough to beat her boyfriend John Abraham’s energy levels. “I want to do action. I think I am too fit at this point in time and that is a zone that I have not tapped fully and in India we don’t have too many films where the woman gets to do action. Hopefully, somewhere I see that I will be able to realize something that I want very soon. So I’m just crossing my fingers,” Bipasha said in an interview. The 31-year-old has one of the most well-toned bodies among Bollywood actresses. “I feel girls should be (physically) strong, it’s very important. I have a boyfriend who is very strong; so I should match at least 30 percent of his strength. “Now my energy level is much more than him, I can beat his energy levels in 20 minutes,” revealed Bipasha, who also released a fitness DVD “Bipasha Basu: Love Yourself” earlier this year. After starting her career with the 2001 film “Ajnabee”, Bipasha, who was initially a model, went on to do films like “Aankhen”, “Jism”, “Raaz”, “No Entry”, “Corporate”, “Race” and “All The Best”. Tagged as ’sexy’ and ‘glamour girl’, Bipasha surprised everyone when she decided to do the issue-based film “Lamhaa” and flaunt a no make-up look. She is repeating the same in her new release “Aakrosh”. Directed by Priyadarshan, it is about honour killings and also stars Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna. “In the film, I play Geeta who loves Ajay Devgn but is not allowed to marry him because he is from a lower caste. She is married off to Paresh Rawal. In the film, I lead a very sad life. This is by far the saddest role that I’ve ever done. I actually pity the life of women who go through this. “My character in the film goes through marital abuse, she gets continuously beaten up and abused by her husband. She has no happiness left. She is not married to the man she loves. Basically she is more or less a dead person. “That’s why Geeta has no makeup, her saris are very normal. She doesn’t even do her hair properly. She is by far the most vulnerable, weak, fragile role that I have ever played,” she added. Bipasha maintains she is not a method actor and leaves her character on the sets. “I’m not a method actor, I don’t even take it after the cut. I’m an instinctive actor because I learnt on the job. I never wanted to be an actor when I did my first film. so for me it is all instinctive. “If you make me rehearse too much, I’ll be like a robot, I’ll be mechanical. So, I don’t belong to the method school of acting and I don’t understand it because to me they all sound mad.”
Box office analysis-July 24 , 2008
First weekend performance of latest release Sometimes all one needs to make a film a box office success is good music, very good publicity, beautiful actors and some attractive locations. Of course the content does the final talking in most of the cases but there are exceptions to the rule. KISMAT KONNECTION hits the jackpot by being one such exception. The film wasn't extraordinary; in fact it was one of the most ordinary works of Aziz Mirza but Pritam's chartbuster music aided by some spirited act by Shahid Kapoor, Vidya Balan and Vishal Malhotra saved the day for the fim. In fact not just the day but an entire weekend, as apparent from the huge start that the film took. Opening over 80% on Friday, the film sustained well in the same ratio on Saturday and Sunday as well, hence ensuring that the candy floss film sails away to success. Of course the film isn't bad at all (that's exactly the reason why crowds kept coming in even on the Saturday/Sunday); it is just that overall it isn't as impressive as the promos indicated. Last 30 minutes of the film make one feel completely indifferent to the proceedings but it is the effervescence of the first half which compensates for that. As of now TIPS and UTV are enjoying their second straight success together after RACE. With coming fortnight not really proving to be challenging enough and SINGH IS KINNG being far away (8th August), Shahid Kapoor can ensure yet another good HIT to his name after VIVAH and JAB WE MET! Ditto for Vidya who is now is making it three in a row after HEYY BABYY and BHOOL BHULAIYAA. What can one say about CONTRACT? The film hasn't even risen at all to show any kind of drop whatsoever. The film was 'thanda' on Friday and followed the same route on Saturday and Sunday as well. Adhvik Mahajan has got good reviews for himself but since the film has hardly been seen by many (and seems to be on it's way off the theaters in a fortnight's time), his effort may largely go unnoticed. Honestly, the film isn't a bad watch per se but the KISMAT KONNECTION (and JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA which is still going strong) made sure that audience preferred feel good over underworld! Last week's movies A decent opening at smaller centers (it's target audience) had raised hopes for MEHBOOBA. The star cast got the film it's initial at select centers. However, it was just a bubble which burst soon after. The moment opening weekend was through, the film crashed at the box office. Result was that in spite of being released at 400 cinemas (most of them being single screen though), the film could muster only 2 crores. Quite poor for a film which has been made on a very lavish budget. Mumbai had mere 40 lakhs to show while Delhi was extremely poor with only 10 lakhs. Unlike another stuck film like BIG BROTHER (starring Sunny Deol which had released last year after being in the making for 5 years and had still went on to make close to 7-8 crores), MEHBOOBA is all set to disappear in a fortnight's time. Ironically, this one is a huge flop which doesn't make a difference to anyone associated with the film except for the distributors who had invested in it. As for producer-director Afzal Khan, he has GOD TUSSI GREAT HO to look forward to (which by the way has debutant Rumi Jafrey at the helm of direction) From the past JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA has turned out to be a blockbuster at the box office. Not just that, it has also created a record for Imran Khan who now has the biggest grosser to his credit when it comes to a debut film. Sustaining itself brilliantly with increased number of prints in it's second week, the film has barely shown a fall in collections and collected another 17 crores at the box office. This brings it's two week total to more than 37 crores which leaves behind the collections of all those blockbusters/super hits in the last couple of decades which featured newcomers. The films that we are talking about are KAHO NAA...PYAAR HAI, MAINE PYAAR KIYA, QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK and ISHQ VISHK - each of which had it's main lead being seen in a lead role (in a commercial set-up) for the first time. Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shahid Kapoor - each of them had a great kick start to their career when the aforementioned films went on to be huge hits. The collections for these films (incidentally all of them belonged to romantic genre) were huge and turned the actors into a household name. The same has now happened for Imran Khan for whom JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA has turned out to be a great beginning. Collections speak for themselves as 37 crores in just two weeks is far more than what any debutant leading hero has enjoyed in the past. The film boasted of more than 4 crores in it's second week at Mumbai while Delhi had another 2.25 crores to add. NCR brought in another 1.25 crores which makes JTYJN a bona fide blockbuster in the making. With 50 crores collections being a given for this Abbas Tyrewala film, it now has to be seen whether the film goes on to top 60 crores, a benchmark set by the two biggest grossers of 2008 so far - RACE and JODHAA AKBAR! LOVE STORY 2050 is now officially a box office disaster. Incurring heavy losses after a (expected) massive crash in it's second week, it's publicity too has come to a standstill. It must certainly be heartbreaking for Bawejas who spent close to 3 years in creating this dream for celluloid. Yes, the effort was visible but audience, which has it's own parameters for getting enthused about a film, didn't quite worry much about what went behind the scenes. What was on screen mattered most and truly, LOVE STORY 2050 didn't quite succeed in that. Just like RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG last year, LOVE STORY 2050 too took more than 80% drop with a little more than 1.5 crores coming in. At 12 crores, the film is making a hasty retreat from theaters. Quite disappointing! While JTYJN was keeping people busy in giving it a second watch, YRF clearly gave up and got their act focused on BACHNA AE HASEENO instead. The man who would be most bitter by the turn of events should be Kunal Kohli himself since he hadn't quite made a bad film. On any other day with another production house and a different cast, his fantasy film may just have managed to sail through. However, the stars didn't quite favor him with JTYJN killing whatever limited chances that the film had. Result was another 70% fall and only 1.25 crores coming which brings the film's total to 22 crores. FLOP. In the future MISSION ISTANBUL and MONEY HAI TOH HONEY HAI are the two releases in the coming weekend but none of the two are expected to take anything better than a 30%-40% opening. Out of the two, MISSION ISTANBUL should open better since it has been aggressively promoted by producer Suneil Shetty. Also, Apoorva Lakhia has made a couple of well directed action films in the recent years (SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA and EK AJNABEE) that may just bring in the audience over the weekend. Surprisingly MONEY HAI TOH MONEY HAI has not touched even 25% of the kind of promotion which producer Kumar Mangat has done for his films like SUNDAY, ONE TWO THREE and even HAAL E DIL. The film's promos have been ordinary too and until and unless there is a trend reversal happening with the film turning out to be better than the promos, this Govinda starrer doesn't quite stand a chance!
Box office analysis-May 31 , 2007
First weekend performance of latest release What Sanjay Gupta couldn't achieve with his last directorial outing ZINDA, he did it for his director Apoorva Lakhia in SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA! Tremendous publicity combined with using all media forums to create a massive hype resulted in SOAL taking the best opening of the year at the box office. Yes, best! Curiosity to watch the film increased exponentially as the Friday approached closer and by the time the gates opened for the first show of the film, there was a stampede situation outside both the multiplexes and the single screens! To add to all the fun, the film has been appreciated by the masses in entirety while class audience is also showing keen interest in the film, hence ensuring that the film gets past the safety mark in one week flat. As of now the film is en route to be a massive success! Apoorva has turned third time lucky, and how! By the end of first week, the film should collect the double of what his first two films, MUMBAI SE AAYA MERA DOST and EK AJNABEE earned in their first week. Happiest of all is bound to be Vivek Oberoi who has earned both accolades both from the junta and the critics. He has suited the part of the main villain in the film and has done justice to the heavily publicized Dutt v/s Oberoi clash! It won't be wrong to say that SOAL wave impacted CHEENI KUM to a good degree! In normal circumstances without a major competition like SOAL, CHEENI KUM would have taken a good start at the box office. But it wasn't the case to be as the film saw a below average opening, though it remained stable over the weekend. It is highly expected that once the SOAL euphoria settles down, the film would be able to find its audience (mainly gentry) and help it cross the safety mark in around 2-3 weeks. Still, it is not a rosy road ahead since big competition lies in the form of FOOL N FINAL, PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - AT WORLD'S END and SHREK 3. But more about that later! CHEENI KUM could have been a superb film if only if was shorter by at least 30 minutes and not dragged unnecessarily in the second half. This is the reason why word of mouth too ranges from being good to just-about-ok, hence threatening to create a dent in the film's business. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu have come up with superb acts though Paresh Rawal [surprisingly] has been out of color! Last week's movies Director Anurag Singh must be one disheartened man. He made a good first film RAQEEB but call it poor promotion, general lack of awareness and audience looking forward to the big Friday bringing to them SOAL and CHEENI KUM that the film got a cold shoulder. RAQEEB failed to taken even a decent opening and just didn't show any sign of a jump even though those select few who watched the film gave it a Thumbs Up. In the end, the film dragged on to just a 1 crore mark with miserable collections from across the country. Both Delhi and Mumbai hardly managed to cross the 10 lakhs mark which tells the tale! A disappointing box office performance for a decent film, hence proving once again that a) 'intelligent' promotion is extremely vital to a film's fortunes and b) one can never predict what an audience is looking for. Released at just about 150 theaters, EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL held on well for an entire week to cross the 1.5 crore mark. The film was quite good in Mumbai where it earned in excess of 60 lakhs though Delhi was just about ok with only 12 lakhs coming in. Delhi NCR though brought in revenues in the same range. Surprisingly the film wasn't continues in the number of shows it was running in the first week with the print count coming considerably down, at least at the cities. Still, this small film has earned enough for itself to be called at least coverage at the box office. Abhay Deol gets a second success to his name after HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. while director Sanjay Khanduri makes a good start to his career with his debut film doing decent at the box office. From the past After TRRP, METRO has turned out to be second film in quick succession that has shrug past all the claims of being called as a non-starter/flop/box office disaster and instead proved to be a HIT at the box office. The film has turned out to be a very good success at the box office as it has created history by showing a negligible drop (~20%) even as it moved from 1st to 2nd week. Success of this Anurag Basu film is special since it retained itself at such collections while running at around 200 screens. After a 6 crore first week, the film has earned 5 crore more to cross the 11 crore mark and hence qualifying as a hit. The film has held up well with Mumbai bringing in another 1.5 crore while Delhi sticking around the 60 lakhs mark. Delhi NCR too has held up amazingly well with 45 lakhs more coming in hence bringing cheers for the entire ensemble cast of the film. The way METRO is running at the theaters, it won't be far away from being a massive success if it holds on to similar collections for a week or two. GOOD BOY BAD BOY did fall in its second week but to it's good luck, the drop wasn't that disastrous that it would be termed as a crash. Agreed that the film hardly had 5 crores to boast at the end of week 1 but another 2 crore odd coming in second week meant that the film would end up as at least a coverage with near 7 crore collections. It is not expected that the film would earn anything substantial from this point on but still call it the pull of Emraan Hashmi that he has managed at least a face saving box office outing for his film. Falling by way less than industry standard of 50% every week since its release 4 weeks back, TA RA RUM PUM has now qualified itself as a clean hit in spite of detractors still trying to tag it otherwise. For a film to be called as a flop at the end of show 1, it is no mean achievement to net near to 35 crore in 4 weeks time. Showing its power of having long legs, the film fell by just 30% last week and got home another 3.5 crore to keep the money flowing in. With Mumbai hardly showing a fall (1 crore to 80 lakhs) and Delhi too holding up well at 40 lakhs, the film has now made profits for all. Meanwhile BHEJA FRY continues to surprise even it's makers as it refuses to budge in spite of all the competition around it. The film fell by just 20% last week and got home another 40 lakhs to take its total past 7.5 crores! Commendable. A superhit, BHEJA FRY by Sagar Bellary is yet another clean hit for independent film makers after KHOSLA KA KHOSLA. In the future FOOL N FINAL is the sole notable Hindi release this weekend though there is huge competition in the form of PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN - AT WORLD'S END and to an extent SHREK 3. Still, an immense publicity drive by Firoz Nadiadwala combined with exciting promos mean that the film should take a good start [50-70%] at the box office. It won't be wrong to say that SOAL wave impacted CHEENI KUM to a good degree!
