Salman grazing newer pastures?

Are they together or are they not? Well this seems to be a never ending arguement when it comes to the relationship of Salman and his belle Katrina Kaif. But recently there have been rumors doing the rounds that Salman has changed his focus from Katrina and zoomed in on a new face. Well she is not a new face altogether, we are talking about Mahek Chahal, who is rumored as the new girl in Sallu's life. There are also reports that things or not in the best of shape between Salman and Katrina. The recent buzz is that Sallu is hanging on with this NRI beauty a bit more than usual and has been going around introducing her to prospective producer friends. If you remember it right, then this was the lass who was first suggested to appear in 'Ajnabi', but for reasons unkown was dropped from that project. Mahek has also been spotted in sets of Sallu films where she is not involved. Might it be that our Sallu baba is attracted to NRI chics? Though Salman is always mentioned as the bad boy of Bollywood, seldom people fail to notice that this bad boy has a heart of gold. It might just be that Sallu was trying to just be friendly to this damsel in distress and helping her find good roles in Bollywood. Is this new found friend just a friend or is there something more than friendship to the Sallu-Mahek relationship, only time can be the judge.

Shamir riding high

The New Year has started off well for music director Shamir Tandon. With the music release of SUPERSTAR by Ashtavinayak films (featuring Kunal Khemu and Tulip Joshi), the 1st track on air AJNABI has already caught the fancy of the youth at large. With the music of 'Superstar' Shamir has made an entry into the realm of commercial cinema prior to which he was best known for his mature music in the realistic movies of Madhur Bhandarkar. Having extensively used legandary voices in his past films (Lataji, Ashaji ,Manna Dey, Jagjit Singh, Bhupinder etc), in this film he has used a lot of young new voices. Having discovered an Assamese voice Raaj for his lead romantic track AJNABI, Shamir has used Hamza for an indo-arabic track MANN TU TALBAT, a hip hop track in the voice of Adnan Sami, a retro track by Shaan Kunal and a new voice Amrita Kak, his personal favorite is the melancholic duet featuring Sultan Khan and Rekha Bharadwaj. The lyrics have been penned by Shabbir Ahmed. Shamir promises to have a new music release every alternate month. The very 1st quarter will see the music release of Superstar, Mr White Mr Black and Sangeet Sivan's Click

Top-10 Lyricists of the year

These are the men who stay in the background, but it's their work which speaks - literally! Meet the men who wrote some memorable lyrics for the music albums that came in 2006. 1. Sayeed Quadri [Wo Lamhe, Bas Ek Pal, Anwar] Sayeed Quadri has been around for years. But it was only in year 2006 when he became a household name, well almost, for some priceless gems that he contributed to Hindi film songs scene. With number of back to back superhit songs to his credit throughout the year, he enters 2007 as a lyricist to reckon with when it comes to heartwarming love songs. Watch out for songs as diverse as oh-so-lovely-and-intimate 'Chal Chale Apne Ghar' [Woh Lamhe], cry-of-love 'Tere Bin' [Bas Ek Pal] and ever-so-romantic 'Maula Mere' [Anwar] and you would know why! 2. Gulzar [Omkara, Jaanemann, Guru] Gulzar saab may have been in news most for his 'Beedi' [Omkara] in the year gone by but one must not forget that he came up with some beautiful songs like 'Ajnabi Shehar' and 'Saud Dard' [Jaan E Mann] that just fell short of being great! This was not all as he united with A.R.Rahman for 'Jaage Hain' in 'Guru' that has undoubtedly turned out to be one of the best songs to have been churned out in 2006. He is one veteran whose craft is becoming popular with audience across generations over the years! 3. Javed Akhtar [KANK, Don, Umrao Jaan] Not to be left behind in the race of some unforgettable songs, Javed Akhtar saab came up with 'Mitwa' [Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna] that sits at the top when it comes to one of the most popular numbers in past year. This was not all as he reserved one of his best writings for son Farhan when he penned 'Aaj Ki Raat' [Don]. On the face value, the song sounds like just one of those many pre-climax/climax songs but explore it minutely and you could hear an entire story unfold in those few words! And yes, it's a pity that his superb work for 'Umrao Jaan' completely went unnoticed! Have you lend an ear to 'Jhoote Ilzam' yet? 4. Amitabh Verma [Bas Ek Pal, Ankahee] A relative newcomer, young Amitabh knows how to present poetry to the current audience. He may not be an ultimate wordsmith with the greatest of vocabulary but when it comes to sheer human emotions, he knows how to bring it fore to the 'aam junta'. Hear some under rated but highly effective songs like 'Zindagi Hosh Mein' [Bas Ek Pal] and 'Ek Pal Ke Liye' [Ankahee] and you can't help but give two thumbs up to the stranglehold of Amitabh on tugging at your heart strings! 5. Sameer [Salaam E Ishq, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Baabul, Ankahee] Mr. Consistent Sameer continued to deliver one chartbuster after another [as he has done in last couple of decades]! While there were innumerous chartbusters to his credit in 2006, the songs where his writing impressed most were 'Dil Kya Kare' [Salaam E Ishq], 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' [Humko Deewana Kar Gaye], 'Kehta Hai Baabul', 'Baawri Piya Ki' [Baabul] and 'Ankahee' [Ankahee]. A man capable of so much more than he is actually being recognized for, Sameer knows how to deliver different kind of lyrics for different films. 6. Mayur [Gangster] Last year he gave us 'Halka Halka Sa Ye Nasha' [Chocolate] and this year he came up with 'Bheegi Bheegi' [Gangster]! The young man certainly knows how to pen a song for a particular situation. In his short career so far, Mayur has been fast making his presence felt. Hit tracks like the one mentioned above only help his cause! Shying away from the routine 'pyaar mohabbat' route, he belongs to the clan of new age lyricists who aspire to make their music and songs different while staying in the parameter of commercial Bollywood cinema. 7. Prasoon Joshi [Fanaa] Afrer some superb songs for 'Rang De Basanti', the music of which released late 2005, Prasoon Joshi was in form as always for the work he did in 'Fanaa'. He wrote a heartwarming 'Mere Haath Mein' for the film that ignited all around passion with Aamir Khan and Kajol setting the screen on fire. He has been selective with one project at a time but his work is sure to be heard a lot more in the coming months as his stocks have increased manifold in 2006. 8. Irshad Kamil [Ahista Ahista] Just 2 years in the industry and Irshad Kamil has number of quality songs to his credit. With an impressive lineage of films like 'Chameli', 'Shabd', 'Socha Na Tha' and 'Karam' behind him, Irshad had another reason to smile last year as his songs for 'Ahista Ahista' were well appreciated. Can we hear more of him in the coming months? 9. Mudassar Aziz [Zindaggi Rocks] Already sitting pretty on the director's hot seat for 'Dulha Mil Gaya' starring none other than Shahrukh Khan and Sushmita Sen, young Mudassar Aziz has been in the industry for just a few years. As a lyricist, his moment of glory came with the work he did for 'Zindaggi Rocks'. 'Humko Choone Paas Aayiye' never fails to seduce and still makes you long for the love that you either have...or lost! 10. Aditya Dhar [Kabul Express] Just one song and it made one stand up and notice a name - Aditya Dhar. Along with Swartmika Mishra and Vijay Kumar, he came up with 'Banjar', an excellent number reflecting the state of once beautiful Afghanistan, for the film 'Kabul Express'. With Yash Raj Films backing numerous newcomers for their upcoming projects, it would be interesting to see if these three men are heard more in future.

Melodious songs by Anu Malik are an added bonus, especially 'Humko Maaloom Hai', 'Ajnabi Shehar' and 'Sau Dard Hai.' Who Is The Real Music Composer of Jaaneman?

If this one is true then, it sure is the most voluptuous bit of news, especially before the big release. A Mumbai based tabloid has reported today that Anu Malik is not the composer of Shirish Kunder's 'Jaaneman'. Apparently Shirish didn't like the compositions of Malik. Then whose compositions are being passed on in Malik's name? Well, it is being said that G Prakash, nephew of AR Rahman has given his compositions to the film. The nineteen year old master musician has already made the likes of Shankar Mahadevan and Alka Yagnik sing to his tunes. He was helping Shirish with the background score of 'Jaaneman' and instead his tunes are now being passed off in Malik's name as well. During the MusicMazaa music review, I repeatedly said that Anu Malik must thank his music arrangers for giving a cutting edge to fantastic compositions like 'Ajnabi Sheher', 'Humko Maloom Hai' and 'Jaane Ke Jaane Na' for it is difficult to believe that the same composer who gave an okey dokey 'Zindaggi Rocks' sounds superlative in his next release. If this information is true then Anu Malik has some serious rethinking to be done about his Bollywood plans. For no amount of chest beating against Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam really matters if he lacks originality.

Anu Malik proves his versatility again

The music of JAAN E MANN is rocking the charts in the country and is slated to become one of the classic albums of all time. In fact the trade confirms that the melodious music has become quite a rage. With JAAN E MANN, Anu Malik has brought melody back in Hindi film, quite a welcome relief from the cacophony dished out lately. Full of passion and grandeur, Jaan-E-Mann is one of the most enjoyable soundtracks from Anu Malik. It conveys the emotions of euphoria, confusion, festivity, fame, loneliness and pain all at once. Malik goes sophisticated with the music and displays a complete grasp of his work replete with chorus effect a la an opera which consolidates on the grandeur look and feel of the film. 'Hum Ko Maaloom Hain' is an odyssey where you tend to forget about everything and get captivated into this magical music of life. It is genuinely touching and intense. The strength of the music lies in the magnificent collage of the different situational musical pieces. The way Malik has translated his ideas to a full orchestra sweep away your expectations. Both Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam make it all sound so easy in spite of Gulzar saab coming up with his trademark 'conversational' lyrics rather than a conventional prose. After pioneering the rock qawwali in 'Main Hoon Na', one would have never expected Malik to churn out another different qawwali and not a rehash. He leads another musical innovation! Three ingredients are needed for a successful qawwali: high pitch rendering, grand orchestra and an energetic chorus are used to full force in 'JANNE NE JAANE NA'. Malik innovatively adds two more spicy ingredients; a catchy tune and electrifying music! There is a feeling of loneliness, sadness and anguish in 'Ajnabi Sehar'. 'Ajnabi Sehar' is a delightful piece that takes you through the ups and downs of this complicated, yet fun life! Anu Malik truly reinvents himself with ' Ajnabi Shehar', a soulful melody which is a new experience altogether in today's music scenario and has a healing appeal to it. Sau Dard is an audio tonic for souls aching for deeper meaning, inner peace and harmony. Udh Jaana...Bro! is a fun number to be enjoyed! Malik proves again that he can survive the competition and maintains his prime position for his versatility. In Jaan-E-Mann, Malik proves that he has a tune for every situation. Jaan-E-Mann's soundtrack is a must-have album for aficionados of melody lovers and Anu Malik is back in business because with 'Jaan-E-Mann' he creates a kind of music that truly befits the musical genre of the film!
