Shah Rukh, Sonam named worst actors at Golden Kela Awards

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was named the worst actor and Sonam Kapoor the worst actress at the third annual Golden Kela Awards Saturday night, a spin-off of Hollywood's Razzies awards, which recognises the worst in cinema. While Shah Rukh won the award for Karan Johar's "My Name is Khan", where he played a patient of Asperger's syndrome, Sonam got the award for her home production "Aisha". Ironically, Shah Rukh has also won the Filmfare award for the best actor for the same film. "My Name Is Khan" also received the worst film award. Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the worst director award for "Guzaarish". "Guzaarish" also got Black Award for Emotional Blackmail. Director Ram Gopal Varma was awarded the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award (Please Stop Its Enough), asking him to stop making films. The worst supporting actor male went to Arjun Rampal for "Housefull", and worst supporting actress female went to Kangana Ranaut for "Kites". Interestingly, out of five nominations in the category of supporting actress, three were for Kangana in "No Problem", "Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai" and "Kites". Bawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award (Have You Gone Nuts) was given to actor Ben Kingsley for his participation in the film "Teen Patti". However, there was a special category of 'Anti-Kela' awards for the films that were the saving graces of 2010. The awards were for the films that were meaningful and entertaining, while still being in the mainstream. Those awarded in this category were "Udaan", "Ishqiya", "Love, Sex and Dhoka", "Do Dooni Chaar", "Peepli Live" and "Tere Bin Laden". "I think we should learn to make fun of our own work and I think it's just fun although it's tough because we make a lot of bad films. It will be easy to choose good films but it will be difficult to choose worst work," said Vishal Bhardwaj, producer of "Ishqiya, who was present at the award ceremony hosted by Cyrus Broacha in Rockdome at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon. Actor Uday Chopra was given the Chimpu Kapoor award (No talent award for relatives of celebrities). Akshay Kumar-Aishwarya Rai starrer "Action Replayy", which was the big screen adaptation of a play, was given the award for the Most Original Story. Rohit Shetty's "Golmaal" series won the worst triology ever in the history of films and Salman Khan starrer "Dabangg" was given the Ajooba Award for Sheer Awesomeness. The worst animated film award went to "Baru the Wonder Kid". Pradeep Sarkar's "Lafange Parindey" was given the Jajantram Mamantram Award for Worst Named Film. Singer Sukhwinder Singh was given the Sonu Nigam Award for Career Suicide for his debut in "Kuch Kariye". Vivek Oberoi-starrer "Prince" was given the Golden Kela for the most ridiculous sequence in the film. Jackie Shroff won the worst casting ever award for his role as Shirdi Sai baba in the film "Malik Ek". Host Cyrus was at his wittiest best during the award function. Also present were actor Praduman Singh of "Tere Bin Laden" fame and "Do Dooni Chaar" director Habib Faisal.

Shammi Kapoor greets Lekh Tandon

It was a huge surprise for everyone shooting at Chandivali Studio for the serial Bikhari Aas Nikhari Preet produced by Kanika Bajpai and Trinetra Bajpai and directed by veteran Lekh Tandon. Veteran Shammi Kapoor actually came to visit his very old friend who had directed him in his ward-winning role in Professor and later on in Prince as well. Shammi Kapoor and Lekh Tandon both hail from a town now in Pakistan and had struggled together to get their footholds in the film industry. Their friendship blossomed then and has remained for over five decades. The artistes of the serial Divya Dwivedi and Piyush Sahdev could not believe their eyes on seeing the veteran and touched his feet. Said Shammi, 'I was sitting at home and was getting bored so I picked up my phone and asked Lekh where he was. So here I am!' The highpoint was that Shammi Kapoor himself drove his Mercedes all the way from Malabar Hill to Chandivali Studios at Andheri, a distance of almost 40 kilometres in Sunday's not-too-light traffic on December 23. Shammi went nostalgic and said, "The last time i had come here was to shoot for the climax of Ajooba in 1990. A set of the ship had been erected here and I had shot with Amitabh and Rishi Kapoor." All the technicians too gathered around him and Shammi Kapoor obliged them with clicking photographs. "Had I known that my presence would disturb the shooting so much I wouldn't have come here," he quipped.

Amit had Jaya, I had Jennifer, says Shashi Kapoor

'Amit had Jaya while I had Jennifer and that was the reason why we could do so many films together non-stop and still remain in good health,' admitted veteran actor Shashi Kapoor in a television interview yesterday recounting his long association with Amitabh Bachchan in films like 'Deewar', 'Shaan', 'Namak Halal', 'Do Aur Do Paanch', 'Kabhi Kabhi', 'Kaala Pathar', 'Trishul' and more. Shashi Kapoor is the son of legendary theatre-film actor Prithviraj Kapoor and brother of arguably the biggest showman of Indian cinema Raj Kapoor and super hit actor Shammi Kapoor. Having started his career in such illustrious lineage Shashi earned super fame with 'Jab Jab Phool Khilen', a musical hit where he starred opposite Nanda. Yash Chopra's multi-starrer 'Waqt' added to his stardom. And then started the phase in the 1970s when he starred in several commercial successes like 'Deewar', 'Chor Machaye Shor', 'Sharmilee' etc. He was married to Jennifer Kendel, a British actress in 1958 at a tender age of 20. This woman had a great effect on Shashi Kapoor's life. Not only he went on to star in serious films like 'Shakespearewala', 'Bombay Talkies', 'Heat and Dust' etc with her he also produced '36 Chaurangee Lane', a film in which Jennifer acted with great perfection. Although Kapoor's are known to develop fat early in life, it was because of Jennifer's strict diet that Shashi remained in shape till she died in 1984 of cancer. After all in spite of being elder to Amitabh Bachchan by at least three to four years, Shashi passed off as his younger brother in many of the films they worked together. One regret Shashi Kapoor has is that Jennifer was not alive when he was awarded the National Award for best actor for the film 'New Delhi Times' in 1986. Although he failed as a producer director ('Utsav' and 'Ajooba' being a case in point) Shashi Kapoor has played his part in style. Yes, he did turn a distributor by default too. But that was for his elder brother Raj Kapoor when none of the professional distributors were willing to buy 'Bobby' after the debacle of 'Mera Naam Joker'. Shashi Kapoor continues to smile that radiant smile as he notices that daughter Sanjana is doing a great job of taking the Prithvi Theatre (A dream woven by Jennifer) while son Kunal is doing well for himself. His last film as an actor was 'In Custody' for Ismail Merchant. And no, he doesn't wish to wear the grease paints once again. Here's saluting this giant of Indian cinema who has played a big part in taking the world of illusions forward.
