Alert as Western Australia braces for cyclone
A tropical cyclone bearing down on Western Australia intensified on Saturday, placing the region on high alert as the storm threatened to bring destructive gale-force winds. Severe tropical cyclone Lua, upgraded to a Category 4 storm - five is the highest - is moving steadily towards the coast and is expected to make landfall on Saturday afternoon. "There is a threat to lives and homes. You are in danger and need to act immediately," Western Australian emergency officials said in a warning to residents in the sparsely populated Pilbara region. The small communities of Pardoo and Wallal are believed to be in the line of the cyclone and residents of those areas have been warned to seek shelter immediately. "Destructive winds to 160 kilometres (100 miles) per hour are possible between Port Hedland and Bidyadanga extending to the inland eastern Pilbara later in the day," the Bureau of Meteorology said in a warning. "Very destructive winds up to 230 kilometres per hour are forecast near the cyclone centre." Commercial flights into the area have been cancelled and the main highway closed, while the Port Hedland port has been shut down. Western Australia's Pilbara region is an important resources hub, with major iron ore and gas facilities.
Red Alert’, ‘Border’ are films you need to do: Suniel Shetty
Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty takes pride in doing issue-based movies like the recent “Red Alert: The War Within” and the 1997 hit “Border” as they allow him to give something back to society. “‘Border’ is a patriotic film and very rarely do you get a chance to pay back to the real heroes (Indian soldiers). That’s why ‘Red Alert’, ‘LOC’ and ‘Border’ are the films you need to do,” he said. Suniel revealed: “Dutta is planning something else and I am very excited about it.” Suniel, who played the lead role in director Anant Mahadevan’s “Red Alert: The War Within”, says Maoist violence is a bigger threat to India than the Al Qaeda or the Taliban. “Few people realise that this (Maoist violence) is India’s biggest problem today. I believe it is the biggest threat because basically it is your own family that’s upset with you. When there is a problem within a family, it gets very difficult to control because you don’t know who is who,” Suniel, who attended the Miss Canada-India beauty pageant here as chief guest, said at a press meet Saturday. “Right from Chhattisgarh to the interiors of Maharashtra, this (problem) exists…it is cutting the heart from the country. I thought it is a a subject which is very, very socially relevant. If I could bring a change to get the government to see the side of the Naxalites and make Naxals see a side which they probably are not aware of – the kind of destruction (they are causing)- I am happy I did it.” Calling “Red Alert” a milestone in his career, he said: “Nobody believes it (internal violence) is India’s biggest problem. Two years down the line, there will be random killings in the streets. It is happening in small towns. People in cities don’t realise because they are not being harmed. But there is a parallel force that is being formed. I am not happy about what the government is doing.” After doing a realistic film, Suniel is now shooting here for Aneez Bazmi’s “Thank You”, which also stars Sonam Kapoor and Akshay Kumar as lead pair. “It is a comedy. It talks about something to which most women won’t react very positively. It talks about men’s problem of hurting the ones they love most. It talks about relationship – how it should be and unfortunately how it is. It has Akshay, Sonam, Bobby Deol, Irrfan Khan, Celina Jaitley and myself in the cast,” he said. Talking about Sonam, he said that she is the daughter of his “very good friend and a finest actor”. “Acting is in her genes… she is very, very elegant, very pretty looking… done very well for herself on her own, getting into production with her sister at a young age…” Asked whether he would act in southern movies, the actor, who is from Karnataka and has done guest appearances in Tamil and Malayalam films, said: “Yes, I want to. But if you don’t know the language, I believe you are weak as an actor.”
Blooper alert! Did you spot Kareena Kapoor Khan in 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai'?
This is unbelievable! Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan made a surprising revelation in a media interview! Did you know the actress had a secret cameo in Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel's 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai'? Yes, Kareena really was in one of the scenes of the film! For the uninitiated, Kareena Kapoor Khan was supposed to make her Bollywood debut opposite Hrithik Roshan in 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai'. The actress had even started shooting for the film. Kareena, however, walked out of the film as she thought the film focused more on Hrithik than on the female lead. In an interview, Kareena was quoted as saying, "My first shot was for Rakesh Roshan in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. And it's still there in the film! It's there – behind the rock, there's a scene in a blue sweater and jeans. That's me, not Ameesha." Hard to believe, isn't it?
Sunil Shetty is 'alert' 24 hours a day
Think twice before you try to get a little smart with Sunil Shetty. Because you may not know that he is a man who is alert 24 hours a day. Well, this is what is proclaimed by "Anna", a character played by Shetty in the film 'Shaadi Se Pehle'. A stylized don who travels in swanky cars, sports a MS Dhoni ishtyle hairdo with long black coats coming straight from John Travolta's wardrobe in 'Face/Off', 'Anna' knows to keep danger on bay. He has an oft-repeated one liner in the movie - 'Apun Anna, Chaubees Ghante Chaukanna [I am Anna, alert 24 hours]' that makes for some hilarious setting and is sure to invoke laughter in the theatres during the screening of comic caper. No wonder Boman Irani's character in the movie exclaims at his one liner - "So what do you do 24 hours a day, run a day and night chemist shop?!"
Indonesian volcano eruptions raise alert level
Mount Bromo volcano on Indonesia’s Java island spewed ash into the air from a series of minor eruptions Sunday, prompting scientists to warn of possible danger to flights. Gede Suantika, head of the Centre of Vulcanology and Geological Mitigation, said the ash had reached the Abdurahman Saleh Airport in nearby city of Malang. Mount Bromo’s status was upgraded to top alert Friday and placed off-limits to visitors, but no evacuation order was issued for residents living nearby. The 2,329-metre peak, about 750 km east of Jakarta, is a popular tourist destination. Two tourists were killed when the volcano erupted in 2004. Indonesia has about 500 volcanoes, nearly 130 of them active and 68 classified as dangerous.
