Shah Rukh, Sonam named worst actors at Golden Kela Awards

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was named the worst actor and Sonam Kapoor the worst actress at the third annual Golden Kela Awards Saturday night, a spin-off of Hollywood's Razzies awards, which recognises the worst in cinema. While Shah Rukh won the award for Karan Johar's "My Name is Khan", where he played a patient of Asperger's syndrome, Sonam got the award for her home production "Aisha". Ironically, Shah Rukh has also won the Filmfare award for the best actor for the same film. "My Name Is Khan" also received the worst film award. Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the worst director award for "Guzaarish". "Guzaarish" also got Black Award for Emotional Blackmail. Director Ram Gopal Varma was awarded the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award (Please Stop Its Enough), asking him to stop making films. The worst supporting actor male went to Arjun Rampal for "Housefull", and worst supporting actress female went to Kangana Ranaut for "Kites". Interestingly, out of five nominations in the category of supporting actress, three were for Kangana in "No Problem", "Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai" and "Kites". Bawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award (Have You Gone Nuts) was given to actor Ben Kingsley for his participation in the film "Teen Patti". However, there was a special category of 'Anti-Kela' awards for the films that were the saving graces of 2010. The awards were for the films that were meaningful and entertaining, while still being in the mainstream. Those awarded in this category were "Udaan", "Ishqiya", "Love, Sex and Dhoka", "Do Dooni Chaar", "Peepli Live" and "Tere Bin Laden". "I think we should learn to make fun of our own work and I think it's just fun although it's tough because we make a lot of bad films. It will be easy to choose good films but it will be difficult to choose worst work," said Vishal Bhardwaj, producer of "Ishqiya, who was present at the award ceremony hosted by Cyrus Broacha in Rockdome at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon. Actor Uday Chopra was given the Chimpu Kapoor award (No talent award for relatives of celebrities). Akshay Kumar-Aishwarya Rai starrer "Action Replayy", which was the big screen adaptation of a play, was given the award for the Most Original Story. Rohit Shetty's "Golmaal" series won the worst triology ever in the history of films and Salman Khan starrer "Dabangg" was given the Ajooba Award for Sheer Awesomeness. The worst animated film award went to "Baru the Wonder Kid". Pradeep Sarkar's "Lafange Parindey" was given the Jajantram Mamantram Award for Worst Named Film. Singer Sukhwinder Singh was given the Sonu Nigam Award for Career Suicide for his debut in "Kuch Kariye". Vivek Oberoi-starrer "Prince" was given the Golden Kela for the most ridiculous sequence in the film. Jackie Shroff won the worst casting ever award for his role as Shirdi Sai baba in the film "Malik Ek". Host Cyrus was at his wittiest best during the award function. Also present were actor Praduman Singh of "Tere Bin Laden" fame and "Do Dooni Chaar" director Habib Faisal.

Box office analysis-July 03 , 2008

First weekend performance of latest release No, it just isn't working out for Yash Raj Films any more! At least not with the current crop of films coming out of the premier production house which may just loose it's shine if it's subsequent projects in the remainder of the year do not work! THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC was looking dicey ever since it's first promo was unleashed. As days progressed, there was hardly any increment in craze for the film amongst the audience and the result was there for all to see with the film taking only around 50% opening, as predicted in the last week's columns. So what went wrong with the opening of the film? Well, it was not the film per se but the downslide that YRF has been seeing ever since the beginning of last year. Except for CHAK DE INDIA and to some extent TA RA RUM PUM, nothing else has brought any commercial or critical acclaim for the production house. As a result of this, expectations from audience has reached such a low over the period of time that that the 'guaranteed opening' tag which YRF films used to bring along with them have gradually disappeared. This is why it is even more heartbreaking for this Kunal Kohli directed film since by itself it is not a bad outing at all. The reviews have been by and large decent while word of mouth too hasn't been negative at all. Still, an all important opening has missed the mark in a big way and chances of collections picking up over the second weekend doesn't look feasible as well due to arrival of two big films - LOVE STORY 2050 and JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA. Until and unless at least one of the two new films is really bad and tanks within it's opening weekend, revival for THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC looks really unlikely! As for THODI LIFE THODA MAGIC and VIA DARJEELING, no one seemed to care at all. From the former there were zilch expectations and all around pathetic reviews meant that the film is limping to even complete a one week run. On the other hand VIA DARJEELING has been completely ignored and though it was expected that AAMIR like reviews may result in some resurgence for the film, that wasn't the case to be since the film wasn't talked about at all. This one would be seeing a quick DVD release. Last week's movies HAAL E DIL has bombed, KHUSHBOO has been one of the Top-3 non-performers of the year while DE TAALI has barely managed to give itself a chance for turning out to be a break even preposition - Now that's the fate of the three films targeted mainly at youngsters that released last week. When a film's producer accepts that his film has failed in the opening weekend itself and one of the leads publicly calls it as the worst film of the year so far, you know that everything about it has seriously gone wrong. This is the apt way to describe the fortunes of much publicized HAAL E DIL whose 40 lakhs collections in the first week are way below even the print and publicity cost. The hackneyed film has failed in such a big way that it's collections are even worse that Anil Devgan's last directorial outing BLACKMAIL (Ajay Devgan, Suneil Shetty, Priyanka Chopra). What a shame since along with HAAL E DIL, some good music too would now go away unnoticed! KHUSHBOO has been even worse since it now qualifies as being filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani's biggest box office failure. It must indeed be disheartening for Nihalani since with the film he was attempting a comeback to making films. One wonders what would newcomers Rishi Rehan and Avantikka be thinking of since their film has managed to garner mere 10 lakhs across the country, which is much lesser than what Z Grade sleaze flicks earn in their opening week! E Niwas can take consolation from the fact that DE TAALI has at least managed to gather some respectable collections for itself, if not the kind that immediately make is a safe preposition. Sitting at 7 crores, the film could just about manage to turn into a coverage flick, something which the people associated with DE TAALI won't really mind as it arrived after being in the making for over 2 years. The film has it's maximum moolah coming from Mumbai where 2 crores in collections have resulted in DE TAALI being a decent success there at least. Delhi too has been fair at 1.25 crores . All credit to whatever collections that the film has earned should go to Riteish Deshmukh though since it was his name that attracted audience. After that it was good word of mouth that Rimmi's act generated that ensured that the film would find better success once it arrives on DVDs and Satellite. From the past As expected MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP has taken a fall and though it is bad, it is not catastrophic enough to result in it's investors turning panicky! With a 65% drop, the film still managed to earn 5 crores more which enabled the film to cross the respectable 20 crores mark. This makes the film as the biggest ever solo success for Akshaye Khanna when it comes to sheer collections. The film earned close to 90 lakhs in Mumbai while Delhi stood at 60 lakhs. If one looks at Akshaye's films from the past, all of his successes so far have been multistarrers and this is for the first time that Akshaye has pulled audience by itself (though coming together of Priyan and Paresh Rawal along with him did help in a big way). Also for prouders Shemaroo, it is time to smile after GHATHOKACH being their latest box office failure. Still, in spite of face saving numbers enabling MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP to earn an average tag for itself, these are warning signs for Priyadarshan who must certainly have realized by now that there are obvious threats of his magic fading away! SARKAR RAJ took another big fall in it's third week with collections going down by more than 60%. With only 2.5 crores more coming in, the film has seen it's fortunes deteriorating in a rapid manner with only 33 crores to show. The film would cross the 35 crore barrier and would be termed as average at maximum. After TASHAN, SARKAR RAJ is now only the second film in the history of Bollywood which has done more than 30 crores business and has still not reached anywhere being a semi-hit, let alone a clear Hit! Unlike SARKAR RAJ which is on a downslide, AAMIR has been on an upswing and keeping quite consistent at the box office. The film took only 10% fall in it's third week and earned another 60 lakhs for itself. The film is now close to 2.5 crores and is a clear average runner. One waits to see how long does the film manage to sustain itself in weeks to come since it's DVDs are already out on stands while there is a slew of biggies in weeks to come. JANNAT would be celebrating 50 days at the box office tomorrow and the DVDs too would have hit the stands all over by then. The biggest success of the year so far when one looks at ROI, JANNAT gathered another 30 lakhs in it's 7th week and is now inching towards the 33 crores mark. In the future The D-day has finally arrived. And thankfully it isn't the case of OM SHANTI v/s SAAWARIYA this time around. Unlike the Diwali clash which had resulted in ugly spats, it has been comparatively peaceful with LOVE STORY 2050 and JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA with both camps choosing to talk about their own

10 females who provided best support in 2006

Pick up any 10 films releasing in a particular month and most of them would be dominated by male actors. In such a scenario when even a leading lady finds it difficult to find a breathing place for a performance, it is quite a tough task to make a mark as a supporting actress. 2006 was no different with only a handful of females managing to be a cut above the rest when it came to supporting roles. But those who did, they impressed! 1. Konkana Sen - Omkara What a fine actress Konkana Sen has turned out to be! An year where she had number of releases, she impressed most as Langda Tyagi's wife! And no, she wasn't one of those gaon-ki-naari or a suppressed lot. She also wasn't one of those torch bearing women liberation association member. She was just like one of those urban women who knew how to keep issues at bay, run household chores, keep your husband happy through his stomach or the part below [as she proudly tells Kareena Kapoor while training her on marital hood], know about your sexual desires and even kill your own husband when principals dominate over blind love! 2. Kirron Kher - Fanaa, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna She may not have done anything different from what she has done before in 'Hum Tum' or 'Veer Zaara'. But well, who was complaining? As a mother who knew what was right and what was not, she was at her intelligent best yet again in contemporary films like 'Fanaa' and KANK. Think of an intelligent urban woman soaked in traditions and love for her family and Kirron Kher is the first name that comes to mind. Wish there was more of her in 'Rang De Basanti' though! 3. Neha Dhupia - Chup Chup Ke If only Kareena Kapoor would not have been a bigger name, got to appear in more dance numbers and met Shahid Kapoor in the end, Neha Dhupia may well have been the lead heroine of 'Chup Chup Ke'. She was the female with more dialogues, better scenes and an interesting part to play and did well in whatever she was asked to do by director Priyadarshan. She looked beautiful too which was an icing on the cake. From acting in a bit role in 'Garam Masala' to graduating to a supporting meatier role in 'Chup Chup Ke' - Would Priyadarshan be offering her something better next time around? 4. Bipasha Basu - Dhoom 2, Omkara She may have played an inconsequential part in the first half of 'Dhoom 2' but was a delight to watch in the second half where she got to play a dumb blonde! She was hot in 2 piece bikini and equally cute as an Indian based in Brazil who struggled with her Hindi but knew how to treat her guests with 'butter naans', 'butter paneer' and 'butter chicken'! It was a new facet of Bipasha Basu that one saw on big screen and no one complained. Her other notable act was as 'Billo Chamanbahar' where her solitary 'beedi' was good enough reason for people to watch the film again. 5. Isha Kopikar - Don Her role may have been cut to size to accommodate two Shahrukh Khans, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and others but she showed what she was capable of (yet again) in 3-4 odd scenes where she was present. The scene when Don [disguised as Vijay] meets her for the first time in their den and Isha just offers her a glass of water while saying nothing had enough power in it. Also, in the context of the film, she was the dominant character in the song 'Aaj Ki Raat' since Priyanka hardly knew what she was getting into. In the end, Isha got the 'don' and this is what eventually mattered! 6. Sandhya Mridul - Deadline Can we have more of this talented actress please? Last year she was awesome in 'Page 3' and though her 'Deadline' met with a terrible response at the box office, those who saw the film only had good words to talks about Sandhya Mridul. As a small time theater actress who had to turn into a seductress cum kidnapper in the film as per the demand of the situation, she was tantalizingly sexy yet dangerous. The woman knows how to play her cards well, as demonstrated earlier in 'Saathiya', and one wishes more film makers take a notice of her acting prowess. 7. Achint Kaur - Corporate "Can't you do a small compromise by sending your girlfriend to jail for the crime committed by my husband?" How many sisters would have the guts to say so to their brothers? Well Achint Kaur was gusty enough as she begged, pleaded, threatened and emotionally blackmailed her brother Kay Kay to do so in order to save the life of her husband [Rajat Kapoor]. As an upper class female for whom it was just her immediate family and the business empire that mattered, it showed the ugly side of high class society! 8. Masumi Makhija - Woh Lamhe If there will be a horror film made soon, Masumi Makhija may well be the front runner for a led role! As a non-existent female who was Kangana Ranuat's mystery fear in 'Woh Lamhe', she was quite terrifying when she got into a hysteric act on screen. Coming out of nowhere at number of instances in the film, she showed that fear lurks not just in the night around secret alleys but even on open streets in broad daylight! 9. Simone Singh - Being Cyrus From a coy female to a scheming lady - Simone Singh showed the complex side of her character in 'Being Cyrus'. As a woman who was the driving force behind all criminal acts of her younger brother in the film, she was admirable as the wife of a monster of a husband played by Boman Irani. She was taking a lot lying down in the film but the reasons for the same sent a shock wave when her real self was revealed in the end. 10. Taraana Raja - Pyaar Ke Side Effects Taraana Raja? Well, who is that? Guess is that 999 out of 1000 readers won't be able to recollect the name. Now those of you who have watched, think of Rahul Bose's sister in the film who didn't really have many kind words to say about men! Does the character sound familiar? As an educated urban female who could just be your neighbor next door, she was quite good on screen as she nagged her husband over his likes and dislikes for home cooked meals!
