More news →'Bombay Velvet' failure a 'nightmare' for Anurag Kashyap
The failure of "Bombay Velvet", Anurag Kashyap's most ambitious project starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, still gives him nightmares. Weighed down by the financial burden post the film, he says he has learnt his lesson about making films in a controlled budget. "Money is the biggest nightmare. The more you minimize the cost of the film, it works. I just made an expensive film which is probably the biggest loss-making film in the history of cinema. You cannot understand the nightmare I go through every day knowing about all the money lost," Kashyap said when asked about "Bombay Velvet", on the sidelines of Film Bazaar here. "I will never do that again but it teaches you a lesson and weighs down on you," he added. "Bombay Velvet" was undoubtedly his biggest budget film. The movie is set in the 1960s and is a large screen adaptation of Gyan Prakash's "Mumbai Fables". The story is about a man with big dreams and the extent he is willing to go to be successful. It marked Karan Johar's big acting debut with a villainous role. Kashyap, know for films like "Gangs of Wasseypur" and "Ugly", said that the pressure increases when others express belief in one's dream project. "You take pressure on yourself. It's not that someone comes and puts pressure on you. When people are funding my dream, which is unreasonable to begin with, and just because I have dreamt something to do in ten years, then it is not like others are obliged to do it. "When they buy into your idea and buy into your dream and you go out there, you take on pressure. It is a responsibility and it weighs down heavily on you. The burden of the money lost is going to be there for the longest time," he said.c

KJo turns antagonist for 'Bombay Velvet'
Filmmaker Karan Johar is ready to make his acting debut. The director-producer, who has made fleeting appearances in a couple of films, will play a villain in Anurag Kashyap's Ranbir Kapoor starrer "Bombay Velvet". The movie, co-produced by Fox Star Studios and Phantom Films, will see Karan in the role of a rich businessman who plays a crucial role in the life of Ranbir’s character on screen. “I think there is a beautiful actor hidden in Karan. I'm sure he'll make the character bigger than the actor," Vikas Bahl of Phantom Films said in a statement. Karan was seen in "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", "Fashion" and "Luck By Chance". These days, he also seems to have brushed up on his dancing skills during his stint as judge of dance reality show "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa". “Karan is such a casting coup," said Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios. "He is not only one of the most talented and versatile minds in the industry, he also has the ability to surprise. I believe he will do great justice to his role .” "Bombay Velvet" will also see Ranbir and Anushka Sharma together for the first time. The duo will play lovers whose lives intermingle with the evolution of the city of 'Bombay', through the 50s to early 70s. The movie will go on floors in July, and will release worldwide Dec 25, 2014. The first film of a trilogy, "Bombay Velvet" is the story of how a city became a metropolis, unfolding against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and jazz.
Kareena reinvented in 'Bombay Samurai'
Kareena Kapoor's career seems to be heading to an exciting new level with Dev Benegal's film "Bombay Samurai". Post-marriage, she seemed to flounder in her choices with her half-hearted crusader's role in Prakash Jha's "Satyagraha" and the totally inane social activist's role in "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein". With "Bombay Samurai", Kareena finally seems to have got her post-marriage formula right. According to sources, the film is "a crazy zany rollicking roller coaster ride with amazing twists and turns. There are seven to eight pivotal characters. But Kareena and Farhan (Akhtar) preside over the show". "They play a couple like no other seen before in our films. They are wacky and unpredictable. The two actors will have a ball playing their outgoing zestful characters," the source added. Both Kareena and Farhan were keen to work with one another. Says Farhan: "I've seen Kareena's work. She is consistently excellent. I was keen to work with her. Dev's film gives us a chance to try something different." Kareena expressed the highest admiration for Farhan: "I admire Farhan for being multi-talented. Which other director has done so well as an actor? Farhan took my breath away in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. I am really looking forward to working with him." The Farhan-Kareena film starts after Kareena's annual holiday in Switzerland in December. Incidentally, she goes on this annual Christmas-New Year holiday in Switzerland without fail every year with husband Saif Ali Khan.
Karan Johar did 'Bombay Velvet' for free
Filmmaker Karan Johar will be seen on the big screen again and the makers of "Bombay Velvet" say that he didn’t accept a single paisa as an actor’s fee for his negative role in the film. As a token of appreciation, co-producer Phantom Films (Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl) has sent a giant Rs.11 cheque as a symbol of friendship between them and Karan. "Yes, he has not taken any remuneration, because this film is his 'passion project'. I think the full team will always be indebted to him,” Bahl said in a statement. The romantic thriller, which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in lead roles, is set to release Nov 28. It has been co-Produced by Fox Star Studios and Phantoms Films. Karan has earlier done small roles in films like "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" and "Luck By Chance".
