‘Break Ke Baad’ explores new break-up mantra: Director

Debutant director Danish Aslam was not interested in telling another run-of-the-mill love story and so he decided to explore space issues in relationships in his forthcoming film “Break Ke Baad”. “Space is a word that is used a lot in a modern relationship. It’s almost a break-up mantra. I wanted to explore that concept rather than a conventional love story where two people don’t know each other, meet and fall in love,” Aslam said. “I wanted to show what happens to two people, who have known each other for their entire life, if their relationship breaks. I found the concept more exciting than just writing run-of-the-mill love story.” The basic premise of the multi-layered plot is romance and it is through Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone that the director will tell his story on celluloid. It is scheduled for a Nov 26 release. “It has got three different layers actually. One is a simple story about a relationship between two people and what happens when there is a problem in their relationship. “The other layers are a coming-of-age story where these two characters feel claustrophobic within the family bindings as everyone wants them to get married. Then they move to Australia where they live independently,” said Aslam. After working as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker in “Swades” (2004), Siddharth Anand in “Salaam Namaste” (2005) and Kunal Kohli in “Fanaa” (2006), he couldn’t stop himself from making a love story. “I wrote the story two and a half years ago. I knew that I wanted to make an urban love story. I wanted to make a movie that I could relate to… I have also worked as an assistant to directors like Kunal and Siddharth who have made films of different genres. The choice of genre came from there and I liked the concept,” said Aslam. “It’s a very commercially viable film, but that’s not intended. I didn’t want to make a very intense film,” he added. Aslam says he doesn’t believe in penning a story keeping the lead actors in mind. “I don’t believe in writing for any particular person or any particular actor because I think that limits you in your story telling. When you write a story and if you have an actor in mind, you tend to see from that actor’s perspective whether he would be able to do that. That draws a limitation. I finished the story and only after that we started thinking who can actually fit the script,” said Aslam. Aslam says Imran portrayed the role easily as he portrayed his original self but Deepika had to push herself because personally she doesn’t believe in escaping a relationship. “Imran is not acting in the film, he is just being himself. He is a diehard romantic and believes in commitment. In real life too, he is committed for a very long time and that is what he is actually playing in the film. “As far as Deepika goes, I like the spontaneity of an actor that she brings to her character. She is playing a person who is experimental, wants to see the world and doesn’t believe in commitment. Deepika had to do a lot more because she doesn’t believe in that philosophy in real life,” said Aslam. Talking about the genre of the film, he said: “I personally have a big problem with the genre definition. I don’t understand how films are defined on the basis of genres. There are lots of movies, which I don’t know which genre to put it in. Imran defined it as romantic, coming-of-age comedy. I think that’s the genre we are going to stick to.” He also denied that his film is a tribute to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. “There is no tribute to anybody. There is one shot in the movie where Imran does that ‘Main Hoon Na’ Shah Rukh move. That is it,” said Aslam.

‘Break Ke Baad’ recovers production cost before release

Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer “Break Ke Baad”, which hits the screens Friday, has already recovered its production and marketing cost by selling satellite rights. The total money invested in the film is Rs.18 crore. Co-produced by Kunal Kohli Productions and Reliance Big Pictures, the movie is releasing across 750 screens in India. “It’s true that ‘Break Ke Baad’ has already recovered its production cost including marketing costs. Being a hyped project, the digital rights (satellite, music and video) were sold at a lucrative price,” said Priti Shahani of Reliance Big Pictures. “Break Ke Baad” also had marketing tie ups with brands like Kit Kat and Close Up. The brands have spent close to Rs.2 crore on TV spends in prime slots for the movie. Directed by debutant Danish Aslam, the romantic comedy about space in relationships, also stars Sharmila Tagore, Navin Nischol, Shahana Goswami and Lilette Dubey. “‘Break Ke Baad’ is the youngest film of the season. The youngsters of today will definitely be able to relate to ‘Break Ke Baad’. It’s a fresh, fun film,” said Kohli.

Break Away’ a cross-cultural comedy, Akshay on his first foreign film

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar is beginning his first foreign venture with the shooting of his ice-hockey-themed film “Break Away”, an English-Punjabi film that showcases the struggles faced by South Asian immigrants. “It is a cross-cultural comedy. The story revolves around a Sikh immigrant family – how they cope with cultural conflicts and adapt ice hockey to their new life here. Unlike other cross-cultural films, it will be quite unique and you will have to wait to see it,” Akshay said. “It deals with cross-cultural conflicts, but very light-heartedly. It is more of a comedy about cultural issues,” said the star who was in town recently to finish shooting of Bollywood film “Thank You”. To be directed by Robert Lieberman, “Break Away” will have Toronto-born Vinay Virmani in the lead role. The cast also includes Indian-origin comedian Russell Peters. “It is more of an English film, and Punjabi (dialogue) comes whenever it is required. So basically, it is an English-Punjabi film,” said the actor. Excerpts from the interview: Q: Why does ice hockey form the backdrop of “Break Away”? A: Toronto-born Vinay Virmani, who plays the lead role, also wrote the script for the film. Since he has played ice hockey all his life, he has woven this sport into the script nicely. I liked it very much as did everybody else. So we decided to turn the story into a movie. Remember that field hockey is very popular among Punjabis or Sikhs back home in India, and I am told they equally love ice hockey when they come here. So I thought they will find the same kind of excitement and fun in ice hockey in my film. I am also told that the CBC (news website) offers running commentary in Punjabi on this sport. And you will be surprised that ice hockey is even coming to India as four ice rinks are being installed to promote this sport in the country. So taking these factors into consideration, I thought it was the right time to bring the concept of ice hockey into our films. I have always loved sports, and most of my films centre around sports. Q: Tell us about the plot of the film. A: It is a cross-cultural comedy. It is about struggles faced by south Asian immigrants to keep their family values intact. It is about people who come all the way from India, Sri Lanka or Pakistan to settle here and then struggle to retain their identity. The story revolves around a Sikh immigrant family – how they cope with cultural conflicts and adapt ice hockey to their new life here. Unlike other cross-cultural films, it will be quite unique and you will have to wait to see it. It deals with cross-cultural conflicts, but very light-heartedly. It is more of a comedy about cultural issues. Q: Will the film resonate with mainstream audiences? A: “Break Away” will resonate with not only South Asian audiences, but also the mainstream because Canada is the biggest multi-cultural country in the world today. All immigrants go through the same struggles and conflicts when they come here. Our film is as much about South Asian audiences as the mainstream. Q: Where are you shooting it? A: All of our shooting will be done in Toronto. Vinay – the lead actor and scriptwriter – has played all his ice hockey in this city. So the action will begin here in a few weeks. I am sure that Toronto would not have seen anything like this before. Q: When will it be competed and released? A: “Break Away” will be about one-hour-and-fifty-minute long. Hopefully, we will complete it soon and it will be released next year in Canada, India and elsewhere. Q: Will it be dubbed into other languages? A: It is more of an English film, and Punjabi (dialogue) comes whenever it is required. So basically, it is an English-Punjabi film and we have not thought about its wholesale dubbing into Punjabi.

Big break! Vicky Kaushal to star in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavati'?

Commercial cinema seems to be beckoning Vicky Kaushal, who made an impactful debut last year with the critically-acclaimed Masaan and has been part of two more offbeat projects — Zubaan, which released in March this year, and upcoming film, Raman Raghav 2.0. Buzz doing the industry rounds suggests that the 28-year-old actor has been signed by National Award-winning director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his next, a period drama on Queen Padmavati. Says a source, “Bhansali is in the process of finalising the cast for Padmavati and has been meeting a few actors. He is looking for a relatively fresh talent to essay the role of king Rawal Ratan Singh, husband of the Mewar queen, and Vicky is one of the top contenders. Bhansali is quite impressed with the young actor’s work and is keen to cast him as the king.” The film, an anti-hero project, will revolve around ruthless ruler Alauddin Khilji’s obsession with the Mewar queen. While casting for these two roles hasn’t been done yet, there is strong buzz that Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, who paired up for SLB’s Goliyon Ki Ras-Leela: Ram Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015), will be signed for this project too. At the moment, however, the filmmaker has turned his focus on casting other important characters. “Vicky has met Bhansali and discussed the project. He is keen to do this film since it is a big opportunity for him. However, things are yet to be finalised and an official announcement in this regard will be made soon,” a source associated with the film says. SLB and Vicky remained unavailable for comment. The filmmaker has already blocked December 2017 for Padmavati’s release.

PHP set to break records

Neeraj Vora directed 'Phir Hera Pheri' is all set to break records as far as featuring the maximum number of comedians in the same film is concerned! Though Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty and Paresh Rawal may not really be termed as comedians in this sequel to 'Hera Pheri', the characters they enact certainly do have an comic angle to do. But apart from these three, there are as many as, hold your breath, 13 actors in the film who are set to tickle your funny bone. Here goes the list: Johny Lever Shakti Kapoor Manoj Joshi Rajpal Yadav Sharat Saxena Suresh Menon Rakesh Bedi Vivek Shauq Dinesh Hingoo Javed Khan Tiku Talsania Razzak Khan Sunil Pal With a lineup like this and the most successful times for comedy films, 'Phir Hera Pheri' appears to be a sure shot success at the box office this year.
