Big budget does not mean world class - Cheran

Accolades poured from all around the world for director Cheran after he made 'Autograph'. The movie took audiences on a nostalgic walk-down-memory-lane in spectacular fashion. He is currently making a film titled 'Pokkisham' which is expected to have his unique way of storytelling. Once 'Pokkisham' is completed, the ace director would start the sequel to his highly acclaimed 'Autograph'. Cheran, in a recent interview, made it verys clear that he is totally for films like 'Kaadhal', 'Veyyil', 'Mozhi', 'Paruthiveeran' and 'Subramaniapuram'. These are films that are not only well made but also have received tremendous responses from Tamil audiences. 'There are big budget movies made with tags that cry out 'World Class'. Bid Budget does not necessarily mean world class', says Cheran. 'Some of the movies made with huge budgets are successes when it comes to business. But that does not always mean they are good films' adds the director. He also made it very clear that Tamil movies should reflect the lives of Tamil people in such a way that the world understands the cultural and emotional values of Tamilnadu. Tamil Cinema is fortunate to have many filmmakers who think along these lines. This according to Cheran is a welcome sign. Cheran had made 'Bharathikannamma', 'Porkaalam' and 'Thavamai Thavamirunthu' which went on to be highly successful. His 'Mayakannadi' however did not do so well. When asked about this, Cheran said, 'I would take the 'Mayakannadi' experience as an opportunity for introspection and carry on from there'.

Sathyaraj warns against big budget films

Sathyaraj has warned against the possible 'dangers' of big budget films and urged the filmmakers to make their films within the limits of the market value of the stars. The audio of 'Kangalum Kavipaduthey' was released yesterday (January 30) in Chennai. Isai Gnani Ilayaraja has done the music. Many celebrities including Rama Narayanan, Sathyaraj, Selvamani, and KRG graced the function. The highlight of the function is Sathyaraj's open remark on the big budget films. He hailed director Chandramohan's efforts to make a film with small budget saying that, 'Tamil film world requires such directors, who can make small budget movies within a short span of time.' He also requested the filmmakers to make films according to the market value of the heroes. If a hero has one crore market, the film should be made within 80 lakhs, he opined, adding that the likes of Chandramohan are capable of doing so. He also warned that big budget films would harm the industry. Director Selvamani felt that the concessions given by the government are given to every film irrespective of the budget. According to him, there should be positive discrimination to encourage the small producers. Earlier the three songs, which were screened in the function, carry the inimitable stamp of the maestro. The beautiful visuals show the talent of director Chandramohan. 'Kangalum Kavipaduthey' is expected to hit the halls by March.

Kamal & Rajini: The big budget game

The whole industry is awe struck by the big budget game played by its two biggest stars. Superstar Rajinikanth and Ulaga Naayagan Kamal Haasan have been tough competitors for three decades. The competition has now reached new heights with the big stars are now fighting in terms of budget and grandeur. It was said that Rajini's blockbuster 'Sivaji', produced by AVM, was made with a budget of 60 crore rupees. Oscar Ravichandran is making 'Dasavadharam' featuring Kamal in the lead role(s), with a budget that has said to be higher than Sivaji's budget. The competition has been intensified even before 'Dasavadharam' is released. Rajini ' Shankar combination has announced 'Robot', to be made with 125 crore rupees. Then we heard that Kamal starrer 'Marmayogi', produced by Walt Disney, would have 100 crore budget. The fine print is that the expenses for the movie would shoot up as the shooting goes on and cross the budget of 'Robot'. While this mega competition would propel Tamil cinema into international level, there is a flip side to this race. Some feel that the budget war could discourage the small players in the industry. If big becomes the in thing, then the small would become taboo and the small players with simple ideas would be sidelined, they fear. However, some argue that, simple and small budgeted films like 'Chennai 6000028' have defied the so called trends and hence there is no need to press the panic button.
