More news →'Cheeni Kum' receives outstanding response at special London preview
The special advance preview of Eros International's 'Cheeni Kum' at Empire Leicester Square, London, received an overwhelming response yesterday. The cast & crew present at the preview were led by Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal, R Balakrishnan, the director, and Sunil Manchanda, the producer. The fully packed cinema of 1300 people gave a standing ovation when Mr. Bachchan and the rest of the Cheeni Kum team were introduced to the expectant audience. Eros International is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and Andrew Heffernan, CFO, Eros International, started by thanking the audience for their continued support in taking Indian cinema to the world. Cheeni Kum, which translates into 'Less Sugar', is a romantic comedy with a large helping of humour. It is based on the relationship of 64-year old Buddhadev Gupta, a chef obsessed with his restaurant and culinary skills, and 34-year old Nina Verma, who walks into Buddha's restaurant and his life with a twist. With intriguing characters in the garb of Nina's Gandhian father (Paresh Rawal), who will not accept a son-in-law 6 years younger than him, Buddha's sweet but quirky mother (Zohra Sehgal) and his 9-going-on-90 year old child mentor, Cheeni Kum is a through and through family entertainment. The film drew loud cheers of appreciation from the audience and was very well received by press and public alike. Attached are some glimpses of the excitement at the event. Cheenil Kum received rave reviews at the world premiere at Cannes Film Festival on 21st May. The film is releasing in cinemas worldwide on Friday, 25th May.

Big B in 'Cheeni Kum'
Debutant director Balakrishnan had written a script one-and-half years ago keeping Big B in mind. Now the film is going on floor in April in Film City. It has been titled Cheeni Kum and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu, Paresh Rawal and Zohra Sehgal. It is produced by Sunil Manchanda. The movie is titled 'Cheeni Kum' because it is little less mushy as compared to other films. It is a sarcastic love story in which Tabu is paired opposite Bachchan while Paresh Rawal plays Tabu's father. Zohra Sehgal is seen as Amitabh Bachchan's mother. The movie will be shot in Mumbai, Delhi and London over a period of three-and-half months. Music is by Ilaya Raja.
Amitabh woos Tabu in 'Cheeni Kum'
Mumbai, April 5 (IANS) After successfully romancing Hema Malini in 'Baghban', Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan will now woo Tabu in 'Cheeni Kum' - the directorial debut of Lintas creative director Balakrishnan. 'It is a sarcastic love story where an old man romances a young girl,' Balakrishnan told us on phone from Mumbai. An advertising professional for 17 years, Balakrishnan had conceived the film with Bachchan in mind. 'The idea of making the film came to me a year and a half ago and I wanted to work with Bachchan. I discussed the story idea with him and thankfully he liked it. After that I started writing the script,' said Balakrishnan. He refused to elaborate on the unusual pairing and said: 'It is indeed unique casting. But I can't tell you more about it. Let me first make the film, then we will talk about it.' The film is set to go on the floors Thursday and will be shot in Mumbai, Delhi and London over three months. Paresh Rawal plays Tabu's father and Zohra Sehgal essays the role of Bachchan's mother. Sunil Manchanda is the producer of the film which will see southern maestro Ilayaraja score the music.
Ilaiyaraja Prefers Cheeni Kum
He is a genius who hasn't done enough work in Bollywood. Well known for his prowess in orchestration, Ilaiyaraja enjoys the status of a Demi God down south. In spite of having done handful of Hindi films like 'Kaala Pani', 'Hey Ram' and 'Mumbai Express', he continues to be in demand. He is back in thick of things with Balakrishnan's 'Cheeni Kum' and Ram Gopal Verma's 'Shiva'. According to the maestro, he accepted adman Balki's offer because of the innate faith shown by the director. 'I am not selective about doing Hindi Films. Maybe the people here are scared of approaching me, hence I don't get that many offers,' he says. And what about Shiva, considering Ramu uses songs mostly for publicizing on television and many of his films hardly has a song or two? 'Ramu assured me that he would complete justice to my music and fit the songs properly into the narrative of the film,' the whiz says.
Amitabh Bachchan for Nishabd and Cheeni Kum
Bachchan has been shooting for two films currently. One is Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd and Balakrishan's Cheeni Kum. In Nishabd AB has a romantic love story along with an 18-year old girl. Along with Ram Gopal Varma, AB is planning to do many more movies like sequel of Sarkar and Ek. Bachchan in Nishabd is playing a lover but the movie doesn't touch the physical aspects of their relationship. In Cheeni Kum AB is playing a role of a quite humorous person. His co-star is Tabu. Overall, the movie is hilarious.
