Actor-director Cheran created kerfuffle at Burma Bazaar in Chennai. Cheran, who has been vigorously campaigning against piracy had been to a shop and bought pirated VCDs of his very own films Autograph and Thavamai Thavamirundu through his car driver on Wednesday. Apparently agitated Cheran picked up arguments with the shop-owner resulting in rest of the shop-owners gathering at the spot. A verbal duel almost resulted in bloody blows before police arrived at the spot. The local police gathered at the scene and promised immediate action on the law-breakers. The shop-owner was arrested and strict instruction were passed to the rest of the shop-owners to atop selling pirated VCDs.
Cheran's troubles
Actor-director Cheran is in a soup. According to a complaint lodged by a doctor hailing from Salem district, Cheran had taken money from him to the tune of Rs 12 lakh and has not repaid them for the last three years. In a complaint with Chennai police, Dr Sugavanam, said, 'While shooting for his Autograph, Cheran had taken a sum of Rs 12 lakh in two instalments promising to make me a co-producer. He did not keep up his word and several attempts to get back my money for the last few years have ended in vain.' Alleging that Cheran has denied taking money, Dr Sugavanam has also claimed that Cheran threatened him with dire consequences. The Chennai Police Commissioner Lathika Saran has ordered an enquiry over the issue. Sources say if the allegations are found true, Cheran would be arrested.
Cheran to go the whole hog
Cheran is a master director, chronicling human emotions in all its realism. He has also made his mark as an actor. Having acted in three of his own films, Cheran is now naturally more confident as a performer in front of the camera. So much so, he has evinced interest to act in others' direction too. So far Cheran had limited himself to acting under his own baton. Now, he has decided to go the whole hog and do film in others direction. But, he says, he will pick and choose the roles that will suit him. Next year he will act in three 'outside' films. Cheran is currently acting and directing Mayakkannadi, a movie that deals with another realistic subject.
Cheran takes wing
Navya Nair and Cheran are shooting for a song at Paris for Mayakkannadi. The movie directed by Cheran went to floors a few months ago. A major portion of the movie has been completed and now the crew is off to Paris to shoot a song. Interestingly Cheran is known for rural themes and has not ventured to shoot songs in foreign locales before. For Mayakkannadi, the actor-director has gone to Paris to shoot a romantic song. Says Cheran, the movie is about Kumar (Cheran), who comes to Chennai for a livelihood. Getting an instant opening in a beauty parlor, he gets an idea of the fancy world. He finds a reflection in Navya Nair who is also in the same line. The lives inter-mingle and take off. This urban dream is mirrored in Mayakkannadi.
Cheran and Karu Palaniappan come together for new movie
Director Karu Palaniappan and Cheran will come together for as movie early next year. After a decent outing in his recent release Sivapathikaram, Palaniappan wanted to come out with an off-beat entertainer. He approached Cheran with a storyline which impressed the actor-director. He immediately decided to go ahead with the project. Search for a newcomer to act opposite Cheran is on. Also the story revolves around a young boy. Hence the director is on a search for a young boy. Cheran's Maya Kannadi is nearing its completion. The movie is expected for a release this January. Following its release, Cheran will start to work for the movie. Karu Palaniappan, the recipient of State Government award for best director a couple of years ago for his Parthiban Kanavu, is hopeful of rendering a movie that dwells on human emotions with Cheran.
Cheran, Kamalini pair up
It is an unlikely combination. Cheran is all rustic poetry, full of ideas and inspiration from the land. Kamalini, on the other hand, is a doe-eyed beauty from Bengal. She seems like a verse from Rabindra Sangeeth. She has done quite a few meaningful films like Phir Milenge, Shekar Kammula's Anand and Godavari and the most recent Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyadau in Tamil. There is little to make a connection between the two, Cheran and Kamalini. But Karu Palaniappan will. He has cast the twosome as the hero and heroine of his new movie. Karu Palaniappan is one of the smart directors around. His Sivapathigaram and Parthiban Kanavau had something extra and interesting. Karu Palaniappan is making the film for Gnanam Movies. Vidyasagar, a Karu Palaniappan favourite, is the music director. Kamalini, who is busy in Telugu, will begin shooting for the movie after Cheran winds up Maya Kannadi.
