Chile blaze claims six firefighters

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera invoked anti-terror legislation Thursday after at least six firefighters died in a wildfire he believes was started deliberately. An unusually hot and dry start to the Chilean summer has seen more than 50 wildfires, fanned by high winds, burn down scores of homes and destroy some 50,000 hectares (123,000 acres) of woodland and brush over the past 10 days. Authorities suspect several fires that erupted almost simultaneously in the forest regions of Biobio, Maule and Araucania, some 500 to 700 kilometers (310 to 435 miles) south of the capital Santiago, were the work of criminals. Ten firefighters, private contractors for forestry company Mininco, were trapped Thursday when the blaze they were tackling in a mountain forest near Carahue in Araucania suddenly changed direction. Six firefighters perished in the flames, two were rescued by helicopter but suffered bad burns, and another is still missing. The 10th firefighter, Hector Herrera, managed to escape himself.

Ghai gives a clean chit to Bachchan and SRK

At least one man in the industry has stood up and said that he doesn't see any problem whatsoever between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. In Delhi for an event, Subhash Ghai was quizzed on what he thought about the Big B/SRK war. His reply to this was that he didn't quite see any such war building up between the two. He justified his claim by saying that in a private party a few days back, he was seated on a table with both Big B and SRK and he didn't see any bad vibes between the two, let alone any war. They both were chatting away with each other quite comfortably which was quite a good sight in itself. Wish people from both within and outside the industry, especially the media, take a cue from this and let the two superstars be alone. It would do much good to them and their families and would also save a lot of print/web space for other interesting information.

Neil floored by the Chote Ustaads

Emotions were at its height as all the contestants & judges showcased the emotional theme of 'Bidaai'at this week's Star Voice of India Chote Ustaad. But despite the episode being a tearjerker, the surprise celebrity guest, Neil Nitin Mukesh stole the show as his presence set the perfect mood for the evening and encouraged the contestants to perform their best. Neil became really emotional as contestant Prakriti sang. He recalled the day his sister got married since the same song was sung at her wedding. The only boy in the all-girls gang, Vyom Kapoor, sang 'Chalo doli uthao'. Neil was floored by Vyom and asked him if he would sing for him in the future. These songs also reminded Pritam & Kunal about their sister's marriage and how much they miss their presence. Pritam said that he and his elder sister used to fight like cats and dogs and that he sobbed endlessly when she got married. Kunal recollected the way his sister, who's now in the US , used to complain to his mother saying that their mother loved Kunal more. Shreya Ghoshal siang 'Ab ke baras bhej bhaiyya ko babul', but broke down in the middle as she was unable to control her emotions. She then requested the Chhote Ustaad participants not to forget her and to always stay in touch with her. Looks like this Friday's episode of Chote Ustaad is a sure tearjerker.

Suspected arson attacks in Chile as firemen buried

The home of a Mapuche Indian leader in Chile was destroyed in a suspicious blaze Sunday in an area ravaged by forest fires, which officials say may have been caused by radical indigenous activists. Police said hooded assailants also torched the home of a retired military officer and fired at officers in the forest region of Araucania, as seven firefighters killed there last week in a massive wildfire were buried Sunday. Jose Santos Millao, who represents the Mapuche Indians on the National Corporation for Indigenous Development, told reporters his house had "no electricity," making the source of the blaze suspicious. No one was hurt. An unusually hot and dry start to the Chilean summer has seen more than 50 wildfires, fanned by high winds, burn down scores of homes and destroy some 50,000 hectares (123,000 acres) of woodland and brush over the past 10 days. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera invoked controversial anti-terror legislation after the seven firefighters - private contractors for forestry company Mininco - were killed on Thursday in a mountain forest near Carahue.
