Rang De Basanti fails Golden Globe Test

'Rang De Basanti' is India's official entry to the Oscars this year. But there's a setback for the film as it failed to make it to the nominations list of the 64th Golden Globe. The five best foreign language films include 'Apocalypso' (US), 'Letters from Iwo Jima' (US/ Japan), 'The Lives of Others' (Germany), 'Pan's Labyrinth' (Mexico) and Volver (Spain). Rakeysh Mehra who received the best director's trophy at the recently held GIFA Awards ('RDB' took home several more trophies) tried his best at the Golden Globe. But it seems his best was not good enough. The Oscar nominations will be announced in January 2007. So, who should be roped in to make that final bid'Aamir Khan, of course. Let's see if the temperamental superstar agrees to push a film that was made because of his approval to be a part of it.

Chak De script goes to the Oscar Library

Many observers have commented that the Chak De India had two heroes: Shah Rukh Khan and the script. It seems that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences agrees. The Academy (which among other responsibilities hosts & hands out the Oscar Awards) has requested a copy of the screenplay for the permanent script collection. The scripts in the collection reside at the Margaret Herrick Library and are made accessible for research purposes only; students, filmmakers, writers and actors are among the regular patrons. Screenplays may only be viewed in the library; they do not circulate. Also, no screenplay is allowed to be photocopied. The invitation is recognition that the screenplay of Chak De India is comparable with the best in the world; and will become an invaluable asset for future generations of filmmakers. As the movie goes from strength to strength at the box office, it is a tribute to the entire team that helped make Chak De India such a universal success , critically and commercially.

Chak De India Wins Big At V.Shantaram Awards

First the critical acclaim, then the box-office success and now the industry acclaim! In what could be just the start of an award rich season, 'Chak De India', the inspirational sports blockbuster from Yash Raj Films was the big winner at the V. Shantaram Awards. The Shimit Amin directed film won for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Editor and Best Sound sweeping aside all competition. The V. Shantaram Awards are considered a sign of the industry's recognition for its best achievements and are similar in that to the Oscar awards. It is also unique in the fact that films from all over the country are eligible for the awards. Said Yash Chopra, Chairman, Yash Raj Films, 'We are extremely proud of 'Chak De India' and being awarded 'Best Film' by jury of distinguished film personalities makes it even prouder. These honours only strengthen our resolve to create unique films that not only resonate with audiences across the country, but also stand the test of time, as I believe 'Chak De India' will'.

Chak De India continues to inspire

There is an element of resemblance in the super hit film 'Chak De India' and a legendry woman tennis player Billie Jean King. We saw Shah Rukh Khan's girls exercising their muscles and beating a bunch of disturbing guys black and blue in the film. That fight scene was something that no one among the audience expected till just a scene before. Thirty five years back a tennis player did the unthinkable and achieved a deed that was considered as impossible till then. In tennis match known as the 'Battle of the Sexes' Billie Jean King, a female beat Bobby Riggs, a male at the Houston Astrodome. The game inspired countless number of girls to take up tasks that were meant only for the man till then. In movie language the tennis match was a big hit and still is considered as the most watched one in the history and 'Chak De' also became a super hit commercially and critically with a great story line about women's power and spirit of sports. So 'Chak De India' getting the prestigious Billies award in the entertainment category completes the circle. The award is given to four members of the media who do an extraordinary job in the portrayal of girls and women's sports and the winner is selected by a panel of distinguished panel of women's sports historians and journalists. This is also a great honor for the film just before the IIFA awards and a shot in the arm of the fast growing Bollywood.

MEM of CHAK DE wins everyone's heart

Everyone who has watched CHAK DE INDIA can never forget the 'Mem' out of 16 players from the hockey team. Fair and India's centre-forward, it was hard to ignore Preeti Sabarwal. Well, this was her on screen name. In reality, Preeti is Sagarika Ghatge from Maharashtra. A national athlete from a boarding school who is very proficient in sports, she fell in love with hockey during the making of the film. In fact behind the scenes tales indicate that she even injured herself while braving a realistic jump during shooting of this Shimit Amin directed film which has garnered great reviews and fantabulous word of mouth all over. In reality, Sagarika is a die-hard SRK fan and swears by him. Also, she was selected by Yashraj Films even when she had no previous work experience and did not even have a portfolio. With immense appreciation coming her way for her 'Mem' act, she is now looking forward to a silver screen career today. Character sketch of Sagarika in CHAK DE INDIA: Preeti Sabarwal, captain of Chandigarh team, plays Center Forward. She wears Jersey Number 9 and looks like a Princess while plays like a Terminator. Beginning her education from the best public schools, her next logical step was to head for US. Instead she heads towards Punjab University and its hockey team. She maintains distance from rest of the world with only her iPod for company. No wonder all her rural team-mates name her 'mem'. She is also in love with the Vice Captain of Indian cricket team and their egos clash. But was it just ego or self respect?
