'Dhanam' in town from September 5

Sangeetha is eagerly awaiting the release of her next venture 'Dhanam'. It is the story of a Devadasi, a system which was prevalent in some parts of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other places in the country. Sangeetha plays a prostitute, who is driven by circumstances to take to the world's oldest profession. Produced and directed by G Siva, 'Dhanam' has musical score by Ilayaraja. 'My role in the film is devoid of glamour. All credit should go to cinematographer Jeeva for creating the right looks. It was a terrific learning experience doing the film. "I am not keen on doing controversial roles. I am not behind fame or money either', Sangeetha said. She says the movie which features Prem, Girish Karnad and Ashish Vidyarthy among others has come good.

'Dhanam' director receives telephonic threats

G. Siva, the director of the recently released 'Dhanam' has voiced concern as he is receiving phone calls threatening dire consequences. 'Dhanam' features actress Sangeetha as a Devadasi who indulges in sex-work. Societal repercussions follow and the film has sequences that narrate a move to poison her to death due to her 'wrong doings'. The director has made it very clear that the lead character of the film is merely a victim of circumstances and the film is an expression of societal degeneration harping on human emotions and the thirst to be accepted. Says G. Siva, 'If anyone has any qualms with regard to the film, I am ready to explain to them as to what the intent of the film is. It definitely is not aimed to disrespect anybody. I don't want to make this a big issue and so am not filing a complaint with the police'. He also added by saying that, 'I believe in art and so I ventured to do a film like this which is an expression of human emotions. If I work just for money, I could have made yet another masala film'.

The who's who of the industry including Tamil Film Producers Council president Rama Narayanan, producers Muralitharan, Anbalaya Prabhakaran, Khaja Mohideen and Fefsi Vijayan were among those present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Balachander said, Siva served as camera assistant to me for some time. When he informed me that he is making a movie titled 'Dhanam', I was surprised. After watching the entire movie, I am convinced that he can handle intrinsic themes really well' Urging film makers to be confident about their movies, Balachander said, 'when he made 'Arangetram' a couple of decades ago, a section of people opposed the theme. It worked out in favor of the film as it completed a 100-day run'. 'Dhanam too is a movie based on such a sensitive theme and hope it does well at the box office', he added.

Quality matters 'Dhanam' Sangeetha

Sangeetha is happy that 'Dhanam' has won her accolades from various quarters. Though she has not signed any big offers post 'Dhanam', she is confident that she has managed to make an impact on Tamil cinema. Speaking about 'Dhanam', she says, "It is not a practical film, in the sense it may not happen in real life. It is an emotional film. I liked the unpredictability of it all. It is rather difficult to guess what happens next." "I worked very hard. It is a full-length role for the first time. And for a change the film revolved around the heroine." Why she is very choosy? She says, "For me quality matters the most. I don't rush to do movies. I take one after another. If the role is meaty and I have a scope to perform, I agree."

Anjaan will have complete Digital screening: Dhananjayan

Suriya's Anjaan opposite Samantha is all set to hit the screens worldwide this Friday, on Independence day. Lingusamy directed Anjaan will hit all the screens in digital format, says producers. UTV CEO Dhananjayan tweeted: "Digital revolution in South India. Anjaan will be the 1st high budget film with a huge star, which will release only through digital screens. No physical print is allowed for Anjaan screening anywhere in the world. Having shot the film with 6K resolution quality, we want only digital." The digital projection of a film will help to curb piracy, as there will be a special code in digital format which can trace the origin of piracy. Suriya-Samantha starring Anjaan is expected to take huge openings for the 3-day weekend on August 15. The film will release in more than 1500 screens worldwide including Tamil and Telugu versions. Thirupathi Brothers and UTV has jointly produced Anjaan with Yuvan Shanakar Raja's music.
