Not many know how the popular producer-director duo of Don, Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar first met! When asked, Farhan rewinds to the past, "We met in the principal's office when we were called in for doing something really terrible!!" Ritesh laughs, "We haven't been punished for it as yet! On a more serious note, it's a friendship that's formed over time. We were in school together for a few years." Adds Farhan, "Ritesh was working in his family business and I was working at a production house, writing the script of Dil Chahta Hai. It just so happened that Ritesh wanted to move out and produce a film. He heard the narration of Dil Chahta Hai along with his father and there was an immediate click." Substantiating what Farhan said, Ritesh remarks, "My dad owned a home appliances company, which has been around for 32 years. I had a lot of experience in marketing and dealing with consumers. There was nothing I could contribute to the film business as it was pretty set. I was an avid film-watcher and I was keen to do something on my own. I heard that Farhan (Akhtar) had written a script at that time and we met and got talking." Don releases in the UK on 19th October.
DIL DOSTI ETC. very good in second week too
In a season when not many films have made fortune at the box office, Manish Tiwary's debut film DIL DOSTI ETC. has held on quite well in it's second week. DIL DOSTI ETC. continues it's march
The 3rd week collection of Dil Dosti Etc is approximately 16 Lakhs, and the per print collection was just above Rs 40,000. Despite the presence of two mega-budget films, Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Bhool Bhulaiya, Dil Dosti Etc has continued to register its presence. Released with medium print size, the film is now in its FOURTH week, though playing in limited shows in multiplexes in cities and, on the other hand, the prints are now successfully opening in smaller B-centers, in states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat etc. With total net collection exceeding Rs. 2 crore and 60 lakhs, the film has recovered its costs and can be called a hit. The film made by debutant director, Manish Tiwary has successfully found its audience and very positive reviews.
After DIL DOSTI ETC., Jha's next is KHOYA KHOYA CHAND
With APAHARAN, Prakash Jha has turned producer by launching his banner Holi Cow Pictures. An Ajay Devgan starrer directed by Jha himself, the film was hit. Buoyed by the success of the film at the box office, Jha announced two more films DIL DOSTI ETC. and KHOYA KHOYA CHAND. While debutant Manish Tiwary was roped in for the former, the latter had experienced Sudhir Mishra at the helm. As is the scene today, DIL DOSTI ETC. has paid rich dividends to the film maker by turning out to be a surprise box office success. Meanwhile Jha has got himself busy into releasing KHOYA KHOYA CHAND, the promotion of which has begun, albeit on a very light note. Starring Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan in the lead along with Soniya Jehan, Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Sushmita Mukherjee and Dipannita Sharma, this period film belonging to the 60s is aiming for a December release.
When Nikita was embarrassed on DIL DOSTI ETC. sets
Not many know about the naughty side of the serious-looking Prakash Jha. Recently, the producer played a wicked prank on his heroine Nikita Anand while shooting for 'Dil Dosti Etc'. He told Nikita in front of the whole unit, that an assistant director (AD) had fallen head-over-heels in love with her. Just then, a shy AD came up to her and gave a long love letter written in shudh Hindi and Urdu, while Prakash Jha pushed Nikita to read it aloud. When an embarrassed Nikita hesitated, the producer took over the letter and read it to the entire unit, making her want to wriggle out of the awkward situation. It's only two to three days later that the poor girl realized, Prakash Jha has actually played a huge prank on her. What's more! To her amusement and surprise, she found out that the entire unit was hand-in-glove with the maker while she was being taken for a royal ride. But Nikita almost fainted when she got to know that the letter was penned by Prakash Jha himself!
Critics and masses hail DIL DOSTI ETC
DIL DOSTI ETC. has turned out to be a sweet little success for it's makers. Amidst a plethora of releases in the month of September, a small film like 'Dil Dosti Etc. has thrown a pleasant surprise. All India collection figures reveal that 'Dil Dosti Etc.' is on way to being a sleeper hit. The first week collection for this small budget film was well above Rupees 1 Crore 50 Lakh mark. It has now entered into a strong second week with approximately the same number of prints and shows (the total weekend collection is above Rupees 50 Lakhs). The film is now very close to recovering its production costs. Made by debutant director, Manish Tiwary, 'Dil Dosti Etc.' has successfully found its audience and several very positive reviews (excerpts of some are as below). This is what some of the leading critics had to say about this Shreyas Talpade, Imaad Shah, Smriti Mishra, Nikita Anand and Ishitta Sharrma film: "Tiwary's medium-budget milieu is to the present-gen, what Sai Paranjpye's middle-of-the-road Chashme Buddoor was to the '80s. Well worth going back." - by Mayank Shekhar "How many films do we see targeted explicitly at the youth/students/college kids? Prakash Jha has found his audience and in director Manish Tiwary manages to tell a decent tale. It's shocking at times yes; but so is reality. ...college students are going to identify with this flick and I suspect there will be mass bookings in the days to come." - by Martin D'Souza "Debutant director Manish Tiwary's 'Dil Dosti Etc' is a beautiful comment on the pangs of growing up... Set against a silly wager that two men engage in- (that) Sanjay will win the elections and Apurv will manage to have sex with three women... Tiwary manages to show two divergent views. There are two Indias here in his movie. One is the India that lives in the metros, pampered existences and the other is the small town mentality. As a first film, Tiwary has proved that he has a story to tell and that he also has the ability to tell that story well." - by MSN * "He is one Di#$head..." * "Wo Uski Nahi Teri Le Raha Tha..." * "I will (...) make a whore out of you..." When you hear dialogues like these, you know for sure two things. - That you have entered into the youth zone. A zone where statements like these are common and mouthed not just by guys but also hip-n-happening urban girls. - That the Censors have become much liberal. No more annoying beeps here since profanities are let go as long as they are in the realms of a film and are justified. Well, this indeed is justified as DIL DOSTI ETC could well be the middle-class Delhi setting for an up market DIL CHAHTA HAI setting in Mumbai/Sydney." - by Joginder Tuteja "Peppered with punchy dialogues and witty one-liners... Dil Dosti Etc is like a rich mosaic that traces the journey of different characters in bits and pieces that gradually fall into place and coalesce seamlessly. Dil Dosti Etc does indeed mark an impressive debut by Manish Tiwary" - by Ranjan Das
