'It has caused us, the members of the Indian Film Directors Association (I.F.D.A.) much consternation and sadness that none of the exhibitors in Gujarat has yet screened 'Parzania' ' a touching tale of a Parsi couple's search for their son lost in the violent riots of 2002, in their cinemas, despite its peaceful release throughout India. The act smacks of racial prejudice and bigotry perpetrated by the hidden powers that be, determined to fragment the society for their socio-political agenda. I.F.D.A. feels that the reasoning (that 'the film is not commercial in nature') cited by the exhibitors is nothing but a red herring and a mask to hide behind, to escape the tyrannical pressures brought upon them by the fascistic forces. I.F.D.A . urged the Association of Exhibitors in Gujarat not to capitulate in the face of such pressure. Instead the Associatioin could motivate their members to facilitate the normal screening of the human story of 'Parzania' which upholds the values of compassion and pluralism in the society. It has to be noted that last year Aamir Khan's 'Fanaa' met with a stringent opposition from similar fascist forces in Gujarat due to his concern for the rehabilitation of poor people caught up in the Sardar Sarovar Dam tussle. Maybe it's time for the Film Associations to battle out in real life as well to salvage freedom of expression in a free country.

Noted painter M.F. Husain has paid his personal tribute to K. Asif's epic film "Mughal-E-Azam" by recreating the movie's fabulous scenes in a series of exquisite paintings. "I love India. I loved the film and really wanted to show the grandeur and the power the film shows," Hussain said in a 22-minute documentary on K. Asif's timeless classic. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan presented the documentary made by his production house, Red Chillies Entertainment, at JW Marriot hotel Thursday night. The documentary shows how the film was transformed from black and white to colour and preserved for future generations. The documentary was an initiative by K. Asif's son, Akbar Asif, to keep the cinematic treasure alive. Along with Sharoopji Mistry, he had released the coloured version of the epic film in 2006. Shah Rukh said: "There are lots of such classics in the archive. But being stacked for a long time, the prints and negatives of those timeless films are decaying." "My motive of making this documentary is that lets all come together and spend some money to revive or preserve these films." Veteran actor Dilip Kumar, who played the role of Salim in the film, is the only actor alive among the whole cast and he would be shown the documentary, said Shah Rukh. "I have to go and show him the documentary. He would love to see it," he said.

Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor flies in F-16 at air show
Bollywood hero Shahid Kapoor Saturday flew in an American F-16 fighter at the AeroIndia 2011 military-cum-civil aviation trade expo on the outskirts of this aerospace hub. "It was a thrilling experience, which will help me in the role as a fighter pilot in my forthcoming film 'Mausam'," a beaming Kapoor told reporters after a 40-minute sortie at the Indian Air Force (IAF) air base near Yelahanka, about 20 km from the city. The F-16IN Super Viper was flown by Lockheed Martin's test pilot Paul 'Bear' Randall on mission mode and was escorted by another F-16 flown by test pilot Jim Hedges and a US Air Force pilot. "Though Kapoor didn't take controls of the aircraft mid-air, the flight was operated on mission mode for about 40 minutes with AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar," a company spokesperson said. Prior to the flight on the fourth day of the five-day biennial mega air show, Kapoor underwent mandatory health check-ups and was found fit to fly in the combat aircraft. "It's a huge honour and privilege to fly such a magnificent aircraft. I wanted to have real-time experience of flying a fighter before action in the movie," the 30-year-old actor said. A couple of hours before the take-off, Kapoor was familiarised with the operations of the aircraft and made to 'fly' it in a simulator by Lockheed Martin's test pilots and engineers. "I have been preparing for this event with rigorous training over the last one month. The tests included flying at a very high velocity and making sure I would not suffer from motion sickness," Kapoor recalled. Kapoor is the latest to join the likes of Tata group chairman Ratan Tata, IAF Wing Commander (Retd) Rakesh Sharma and Lok Sabha member from Haryana Navin Jindal to have flown in the tandem-seater fly-by-wire supersonic F-16 "It's a great experience and I learnt how to fly a fighter. Paul (the pilot) gave me lot of tips about flying such an awesome military aircraft and I am thankful to Lockheed Martin," he said. The US-based Lockheed's F-16 is in contention for the estimated $10-billion Indian tender to supply 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) to the IAF along with five global aerospace majors -- F/A-18 Super Hornet of Boeing, Gripen of Saab, Rafale of French Dassault, Typhoon of Eurofighter and MiG-35 of Russian MiG Corporation. "Mausam" is being directed by Shahid's father Pankaj Kapoor, in which the younger would play the role of a fighter pilot opposite Sonam Kapoor. The film is due for release in July. Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni too visited the air show at the closing hours and went around the base where various aircraft and helicopters were on display.
Im an international gypsy, says M F Hussain
'I'm an international gypsy,' said M F Hussain in an interview recently in context with the forced exile from India, his country for the last ninety one years. The world famous modern artiste has always been prone to controversies. But the recent ones where he painted Mother India as a nude earned him the wrath of the moralists. Prize money as huge as Rs 51 crore was put on his head. Even the government was forced to take action against him prompting Hussain to leave the country. He has been shuttling between London and Dubai for some time now and is increasingly becoming edgy to get back to India. Hussain's fascination for Hindi films is well known. His obsession with Madhuri Dixit led to her acting in his first feature film as a director, 'Gajagamini'. The movie failed at the box office but it was lauded for its intense poetic content. His next flirtation with silver screen 'Meenaxi' starred Tabu and Kunal Kapoor (More famous for his 'Rang De Basanti' act with Aamir Khan). It didn't do any magic on silver screen either but one of the songs 'Titli'.' Sung by Sukhwinder Singh with music by A R Rehman was coloured by the palette of life. Hussain had handpicked Shreyas Talpade after watching Nagesh Kukoonoor's 'Iqbal' for essaying himself in the film 'The Making of a Painter'. The film hasn't started yet. Hussain got back into limelight recently when he revealed that he had watched Sooraj Barjatya's 'Vivaah' nine times and was in awe of the character Poonam (Amrita Rao) in the film as she portrayed true Indian woman's attributes. And this is not the last we've heard from the famous artiste'There's more to follow'
