More news →Good films run, not Khans and Kumars - Akshay...
Don't expect diplomatic statements with a feel good factor embedded in from Akshay Kumar. On being recently quizzed whether Akshay Kumar's mere presence in a film read a good success story in the making, he said pretty much matter of fact that "Good films, good story and good scripts run and not Khans, Kumars or anyone else!" Coming from the same man who has a string of hits behind him today and is now firmly placed amongst the Top 5 paid actors in the country, Akshay Kumar still doesn't stray away from being at his modest and jovial best
Govinda returns to filmmaking
Actor/MP Govinda probably has decided to return to filmmaking. This is evident from the four titles of films that have been registered under his banner with the Association of Motion Pictures and Television Program Producers. The titles registered are Thela, Roop Darshan, Babloo Bablaa and Babboo Babloo. Though the titles have been registered but there is no confirm news that Govinda is returning to production. Considering the fact that Sukh was a disaster at the box office, Govinda will definitely think twice before jumping into this. Govinda is anyway returning to acting to support his kitchen. He will be seen in a Priyadarshan comedy Bhaagam Bhaag and David Dhawan's Partners.
Good fortune
Vijayakanth emerged the dark horse in the recently concluded Assembly elections garnering huge share of votes. He played the spoilsport by eating away the vote share of prominent parties like AIADMK, DMK, MDMK and BJP at many Assembly seats. The success of Vijayakanth at political front has brought him respect in film industry. His Perarasu which is lying in the cans for a long time is in big demand now thanks to his new-found success. Distributors, who once turned away from buying the film have reportedly expressed great interest in buying the movie. It is predicted that the movie would do good business and would help producer Khaja Mohideen revive his fortunes.
Govinda set to rock again in 'Sandwich'
Once upon a time there was an actor called Govinda whose mere name was good enough to pull crowds into the theatres. The king of comedy had theatres across the nation waiting for his films to get released, be it A, B or a C center! Then came multiplexes, a few bad choices of films, some sheer bad luck and an inclination towards politics that spelt disaster for his Bollywood career. People still laughed with him but his films were not funny anymore. Old releases kept piling up and when they eventually released, they happened in an arbitrary manner. But now fortunes are bound to change for him as he has a great set of films lined up in coming one year. Apart from his fresh stock of films, he also has a release pending in the form of 'Sandwich' [earlier titled 'Hum Do Hamara Ek'] and if reports are to be believed, he is all set to rock again starting with this film. Though 'Sandwich' has been lying in the cans for around 2-3 years now, this film about double trouble with Raveena Tandon and Mahima Chaudhary is directed by none other than Anees Bazmee who gave Bollywood the biggest HIT of 2005 - NO ENTRY. Going by the feelers of Sandwich, the film brings back the nostalgia of the Govinda of 90s who turned everything that he touched into gold. All set for release in a few weeks time, what one expects from Sandwich now is a reasonably good publicity, especially in the times when the first week's business is the sole decision factor about a film's fortunes. With last year and a half being simply great for comedy films, it won't be surprising if Govinda kick starts his comeback with the success of 'Sandwich' itself!
GOLMAL promo watch - Ready, steady, GOOOOOAL!
What happens when four young man, who look like taporis but act as wannabe-dudes, meet? They do a lot of GOLMAL! With a title borrowed from a yesteryear's HIT, there is a lot that a film needs to present in terms of style, substance and technique. The first look of the film promises exactly that as the COOL promo begins! Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tushar Kapoor, Sharman Joshi and last but not the least - Paresh Rawal. With a starcast like this coming together in a comic laugh riot, expectations are high with anticipation of one helluva 'dhamaal'. The same comes alive on screen as each of the leads is introduced. First thing that is noticeable about each of the 4 men [Devgan, Warsi, Tushar and Sharman] is their loud clothing that ranges from red, yellow and green with fluorescent shades as the flavor of the season. Promising to be a joyful ride, the promo picks up heat in a matter of seconds as Ajay Devgan does a deja vu by standing with his feet apart on two separate bikes a la 'Phool Aur Kaante'. And that's not all as the bikes are not driven by assistants of an action director or stuntmen but two gorgeous ladies who look all hep and happening! The music picks up pace as Arshad Warsi is shown enjoying his ride on a jeep with babes all around him while Tushar and Sharman keep their date with sun'n'sand on the beach along with the chicks! Color of each of the frames is as vibrant as 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' while the split second shots make 'Golmal' look like a highly exciting venture. Fun continues as Rimmi Sen is seen with a bewildered _expression on her face while there is a carnival scene throughout in the form of dance, masti and mazaa! But is that all to 'Golmal'? Naah! With Paresh Rawal's character introduced to the proceedings, there is a sudden thrust to the happenings on the screen as the music changes stream to turn into a kind that Firoz Nadiadwala film promos are always known for. Fast paced, heavy bass and lots of drums - this is what makes the full-on-steam background score highly entertaining as a funny chase follows amongst all. On seeing Paresh Rawal, each of the 4 leads suddenly become mum and tries to find a place under the sun to hide! Sports car topple on the highways, songs and dances happen in the background, lots of action and 'masala' follow and finally there is a 'GOL', oops 'GOAL' as Ajay Devgan [wearing the shortest of shorts] hits a football right on your screen with a flying kick! Now that's what one calls a real 'GOAL-MAAL'! Directed by Rohit Shetty, who chose a diametrically different 'Zameen' as his debut film; 'Golmal' is a Shri Ashtvinayak presentation and is slated to set the screens on fire in the month of July.
Gone with the Smoke
Smoking is injurious to health. The statutory warning makes sense when it is embossed on a cigarette pack. But when the central government puts the onus of all the ailments associated with smoking on the Film Industry by stating that 'Glorifying smoking in films leads to youth considering it a happening thing to do' is a biased viewpoint. A Committee is being set up that will examine every movie and TV programme and 'filter' out smoking scenes. The committee will be made up of 'aesthetes' who may determine that a particular smoking scene in a particular movie is essential from the 'artistic' point of view. But in that situation, the particular actor will have to say before, in between and after the film that 'smoking is harmful'. Tobacco farmers will continue to receive subsidies as they bring in a mouth-watering revenue of Rs 8000 crore but the film fraternity shall go on to receive step-brotherly treatment in spite of the fact that Indian Films are adored all over the world. India in many parts of the world is known because of its films. Here it is important to note that film makers like Sanjay Gupta and Ram Gopal Verma ought to go slow in the blatant smoking scenes that they plug into their films. Many of them are in bad taste and the film critics have uniformly condemned the grotesque smoking scenes in Kaante and Company. But the moral policing plans unleashed, by the government agencies is a direct attack at the freedom of expression. It is time for the Film Industry to join ranks and stand up against the repeated censures imposed on it. Till the time an organized attempt on the part of Film Industry happens, people will continue taking it as a frivolous entity.
