'Thalaivaa' awaits green signal for release in Tamil Nadu
Vijay-Amala Paul’s action-drama "Thalaivaa" has opened in screens worldwide on Aug 9th, except in Tamil Nadu, where its release still remains uncertain for reasons unclear. While one of the reasons for the delay is believed to be a threat issued by an outfit called Tamil Nadu Oppressed Students Revolutionary Force, the other likely reason is due to the rejection of entertainment tax on the film by the state government. The movie was cleared with a U certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but it is believed that "Thalaivaa" was denied exemption of entertainment tax by Commercial Taxes Department Review Committee citing reasons such as use of lot of Hindi and English words and violence in the film. "The tax department committee watched the film in a private screening on Thursday, but denied exemption of entertainment tax due to the excessive use of English and Hindi words and violence in the film," a source from the industry said. Denial of entertainment tax means a cut in the overall profits of the film, and therefore, producer Chandraprakash Jain of "Thalaivaa", was keen to get tax exemption. However, Vendhar Movies, distributors of "Thalaivaa", said the film is likely to release in the state Saturday. "We have given the license to release the film in other parts of Tamil Nadu, but we are waiting for the final confirmation to allow the film's smooth release even in multiplexes across the state," a representative of Vendhar Moves said. On Friday, "Thalaivaa" was screened in a few small standalone theatres along the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The film smoothly released in other states such as Kerala, Karnataka and even in Andhra Pradesh as "Anna", the Telugu dubbed version. It even released in a few screens in Mumbai with English subtitles, along with its overseas release in places such as the US, Britain, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore. "Thalaivaa", which is directed by A.L. Vijay, also features Ragini Nandwani, Sathyaraj and Abhimanyu Singh in important roles, which enjoyed music by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by Nirav Shah and editing by Anthony among the crew.
Green light for Traffic Signal as it arrives solo
It couldn't have been better for Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Traffic Signal'. After postponing its release from late 2006 to early 2007, it kept reconsidering the right release timing for itself and after thinking of January as an option, it settled for February 02. Though it was still a little risky since it was supposed to come only a week after 'Salaam E Ishq' and had 'Red' as the other release coinciding with it, it was a risk that Bhandarkar was willing to take. Seems that risk has after all paid for Bhandarkar as 'Traffic Signal' would now be enjoying its status as the sole release of the week with 'Red' postponing to February 23rd. Moreover, even February 09 has two relatively low budget films releasing in the form of 'Black Friday' and 'Undertrial', each of which have their own target audience and hence won't be clashing with 'Traffic Signal'. All eyes are now set on this dark comedy by Madhur Bhandarkar to arrive on the big screen and make an impression as a third in his Mumbai-based trilogy after 'Page 3' and 'Corporate'.

Green light for pink pregnant seat alert
Following a successful trial, the city of Busan in South Korea is now planning to introduce a bluetooth-powered system for helping pregnant train and bus passengers who need to sit down. Round pink lights next to priority seats in train carriages are activated by a sensor carried by pregnant travellers when they board the train. It was tested by 500 women in April. Busan now hopes to extend the scheme across train and bus lines by the end of the year, reports Reuters. Many pregnant travellers say they have difficulty getting seats on public transport at peak times, while other passengers say they are not always sure whether someone is pregnant, especially in the early stages, and they don't want to cause offence by asking. Busan's solution takes the form of a bluetooth sensor, which has a six-month battery life, that is attached to the outside of a bag or coat of pregnant women who choose to get one. The original Pink Light Campaign trial (website in Korean) was a collaboration between the city council and local businesses. In the UK, pregnant travellers on the London Underground can choose to wear a badge which reads "Baby on board" to alert fellow passengers that they may need to sit down. However, some women are not happy about publicising their pregnancies. "I found the level of attention embarrassing when I wore the 'Baby on board' badge - I'm not sure how comfortable I would feel with pink lights going off when I got on a train," said Ellie Gibson from parent podcast Scummy Mummies.
Trisha green-lit 'Nayaki' in five minutes
Southern film actress Trisha Krishnan agreed to be part of her upcoming bilingual horror-comedy "Nayaki" after just five minutes of the film's narration, says director Govi. "It took just five minutes of narration to convince Trisha to do the film. I wasn't sure when she said 'yes' the first time, so I even asked her again to confirm it. She felt the script had the potential to be a hit and even be liked by critics," Govi told. The film's story is set in 1980s and Trisha will be seen as a 20-year-old. For the first time in her career, Trisha plays a dual role. Also starring Ganesh Venkatraman, Jayaprakash, Brahmanandam and Arya Rajesh, the film is simultaneously being shot in Tamil as "Nayagi".
