Don and Jaaneman comparison guide for dummies - I

Film Don - The Chase Begins Again Jaan-e-mann Director Farhan Akhtar. The man has made a path breaking 'Dil Chahta Hai' and a mixed bag 'Lakshya'. For all the merits and demerits of both his films, one can't deny the fact that he has attempted to present something new every time. His films have boasted of big stars and 'Don' is no exception. Also, he is one of the rare newcomer directors to attempt three completely different genres. In addition, he has gone all out to speak about his film. Shirish Kunder. The underdog. Not a single soul has any clue about what to expect from him. He could go the Karan Johar way [as in KKHH] or fall down as one of those wannabe candy-floss dream merchants. With an editing experience to boost, one sees the chances of the latter happening to be minimal. Unlike Farhan, Shirish has come across as someone shy by keeping mum and let the cast and crew folks do the talking. Music Shankar Ehsaan Loy must have really known what they were getting into. They do it well; they will be in the ring. They don't, they would still be. In a situation where it was difficult to break out of the loose-loose shackles, they have done quite well to come up with a chartbuster retro score. Top sales of the album since the release is a testimony of the fact. Anu Malik was at his worst phase in last decade when 'Jaan-e-Mann' came to him. He had a point to prove and hasn't he done that with style? Taking a complete switch from conventional compositions, he has gone all out in letting his heart do the talking and has come up with a soulful score that would be remembered for years to come. A winning soundtrack for the team. Starcast SRK, Now that's good enough for the film to be sold to an audience. With Priyanka, Kareena, Isha, Arjun, Boman and Chunky as a part of the team, it is indeed a lethal combination. SRK has recently delivered a hit in the form of KANK and Don should only get him a potential sole hero superhit before 2006 closes. Akshay Kumar is at the best phase of his career while Salman has consistently enjoyed a loyal following. With Preity Zinta being a quick inclusion for a romantic flick like this, the starcast seems all perfect. It's hard to imagine someone not looking forward to the three coming together on screen, Plot Do we need to say anything more on this? Nevertheless, be prepared for some major twists and turns with a shocking climax to boost. And don't say that we didn't warn you beforehand! Nope. It is certainly not going to be a conventional love story as indicated by the title. With the film traveling time over the years and looks of each of the three actors changing in a big way in every episode, there is some intriguing feel to the whole plot. Romance with fun, comedy, drama and emotions? Recipe for a good family entertainer. Strength SRK in a double role, with one of them being negative. Slick look that matches international standards. Funky music. Acceptability factor due to basic plot being known. People associated with the film claiming it to be one of the best 'masala' flicks being made. Pyaar, mohabbat, hasi, mazaak, thodi khushi, thoda gham, kuch nazuk pal ' in sum, a film that packs all this and more for audience to have a rocking time at theatres this festive season. Bollywood has conventionally accepted such films with both arms and the film has to be simply BAD not to progress further on word of mouth.

Don and Jaaneman comparison guide for dummies - II

Film Don - The Chase Begins Again Jaan-e-mann Weakness Film's strength is its weakness. Big B's 'Don' has been one of the most watched flick on satellite channels and home video and comparisons would be inevitable. Also, one hopes that Farhan doesn't go overboard with the gadgetry stuff with the film loosing its soul. There are some who have absolutely hated the two remix tracks from the original 'Don'. What if the film turns out to be one of those routine 'pyaar mohabbat' drama with just a twist here or there? Uncertainty factor around first time director Shirish results in one being slightly apprehensive about the film and makes one wait to hear more through word of mouth. Publicity Simply tremendous in the last couple of months. The day theatrical trailer was out; there has been massive craze about the film. Song and talkie promos have been mixed well and the makers have left no stone unturned to make the world aware about the film's release. There was quite a bit of surprise when even after the beginning of promos of 'Don', there was no sign of 'Jaan-e-Mann'. Eventually when it began, the songs didn't catch up in the very first week and took some time to show a gradual progress. Meanwhile in last 2 weeks, the film has managed to catch up with 'Don', courtesy an aggressive and great mix of different songs and scene promos that has resulted in one eagerly looking forward to checking it out. Buzz Buzz about the film is strongest after KANK and that makes it two in a row for SRK. The world is waiting to see how 'Don' performs ' and they are ready with bouquets and brickbats Strong again, though as mentioned above it has taken time to be pick up. Normally for films belonging to such genre, expectations are fairly reasonable without going overboard and hence decent buzz can take the movie through. Opening With dozen odd shows running in each of the major multiplexes across country, the film is all set to embark on a record start. It may not really break the record created by KANK a few weeks back but should still net in the excess of 25 crores. 'Jaan-e-mann' also looks set to open very well but may just end up falling a little short of 'Don', at least on the opening day. From Saturday onwards, it would be the eventual word of mouth that should decide the course of action for both the films, though our film crazy country looks all set to check out both the films and then decide about the better of the two. Verdict At least a hit in the making, the economics of film making has taken such a trend today that it is impossible for a biggie to flop, at least technically. A tremendous opening week followed by dozens of rights for the film on auction means that the producer never looses money. Same as 'Don'

Pt Birju Maharaj guides Nargis in Tandav dance

Legendary Kathak exponent Pandit Birju Maharaj, who had obliged to guide and advice creatively in the Tandav dance, based on the never-ending journey of a Devdasi, picturised a song on the leading lady Nargis, on Monday, 21st January, at the historic Madh Fort near Mumbai for Harward Entertainments' "Pranali ' The Tradition". Earlier a disciple of panditji was specially flew down to Mumbai to train the leading lady Nargis, followed by Panditji himself, who personally taught the nuances of Kathak to Nargis. "Pranali ' The Tradition" is the story of a girl born in a small village on the border of Karnataka & Maharashtra, a girl whose childhood is yet untouched and full of pure innocence but she still falls prey to one of the unconventional and downtrodden systems of our society; a stigma of being a "Devdasi".

Salman gave Athiya Shetty guidelines to succeed

Superstar Salman Khan, who is launching Athiya Shetty in his home production "Hero", prepared her for the challenge by giving her three important rules to succeed in the film industry. "Salman sir has always told me three things: Be humble. Hard work is extremely important. That's what takes you forward in life. People want to work with you because you're hardworking. And never forget the people who brought you to the top, because that's the most important," Athiya said in an interview. Considering Athiya's young age of 22 years, one would also expect father Sunil Shetty to give her lectures on how to do well in life. "Papa is not the preachy type who would tell me how to act or how not to act. Salman sir is also not that type of person. They've always told me about life and about the industry, how to conduct myself and how to interact with people," she said. Sunil, who himself has seen his share of ups and downs, has told Athiya about the inconsistencies in the industry. "Papa is always the reminder in my life. He has told me, with success there is failure. No matter what, there are both ups and downs in life. And you have to handle yourself with respect, humility and an equal amount of grace." Athiya is paired opposite Sooraj Pancholi in the film directed by Nikhil Advani which releases on September 11.

In spite of his busy schedule Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is managing time to pen the script for 'Uliyin Osai'. He wants that the movie to be presented in such a way to remind the times of Chola Kings.
