Remakes help me reach out to more people: Asin

After making it big in Bollywood with the Hindi version of her Tamil film “Ghajini”, Asin Thottumkal is now on a remake spree. The young actress says such offers only help her reach out to a wider audience in different parts of the country. “If it’s an entertaining film and a great story then I think it should be made for a larger audience and not particularly restricted to a group…Remakes help in doing that – to get a wider audience and to get the film across to a larger number of people,” Asin said over telephone from Mumbai. A superstar down south, Asin made her Bollywood debut opposite Aamir Khan in the hit psychological action thriller Ghajini” (2008) – a remake of its 2005 Tamil namesake. She played the same role in both outings. The 24-year-old is now working on “Ready” with Salman Khan, and a Tamil movie “Kaavalan”, which are the remakes of a Telugu namesake and Malayalam movie “Bodyguard” respectively. Apparently Salman will also star in a Hindi remake of “Kaavalan” after “Ready”. Will she star in the Hindi remake too? “I have not discussed that yet with anyone and I don’t think the casting has been decided,” said Asin. Aren’t there any problems of repeating yourself in a remake? “The director is there to help you in that and you know your character well. For you it’s a new script and a fresh project. You are not in any way repeating yourself. So you approach it in that way,” she said. Having worked in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films, Asin is open to working in other languages as well. “Language is not a criterion. It depends on the project. If a project excites me… I’d readily take that up. I’m basically looking at projects that are not language-bound or from different boundaries,” she said. Did she miss the big screen since she’s been absent after her second Hindi movie “London Dreams” (2009)? “Not really, because I have been busy with other stuff and the two films that I am doing have a really hectic schedule. And I’ll be coming back pretty soon on the big screen.” So how is she balancing her work in Bollywood and down south? “It’s not a strategy or plan that I have made. It depends upon the kind of scripts that are coming my way at that particular point of time. So there’s no strategy that I’ll do one Hindi and one Tamil movie,” said the actress, who is also a prolific painter and actively involved in charity work. Asin has been roped in as the face of Lux soap’s new variant Lux Sandal & Cream. Any plans to take up work on TV like other stars? “I am doing my share of TV time with endorsements,” said Asin, who features in commercials for Mirinda, Big Bazaar, Sure – Anti perspirant, Tata Sky, Clinic All Clear and Fairever fairness cream. The actress was also embroiled in a row recently when Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) activists held a black flag protest against her at Mettupalayam reportedly for shooting “Ready” in Sri Lanka as they felt it was an ‘anti-Tamil’ stand. “I’d much rather not talk about that. It’s something that has been in the past…It was blown out of proportion. In fact, I wasn’t even there when it happened…These were sensationalised,” she said.

Bollywood helping its little brother

Marathi Cinema, the tiny neighbour of Bollywood is slowly making itself heard with films that stand true to its identity and flavour. The show man of Bollywood Subhash Ghai made a bold decision and gave a chance to film maker Umesh Kulkarni to make a film titled 'Valu'. The film went on to become a big hit and was appreciated critically for a sincere and emotionally touching film. Umesh gets his chance to make his second feature film from none other than Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Big B through his now revived A B Corporation is set to produce a Marathi film to be directed by Umesh. The shooting of the film will start during the August 'September period and the majority portion of the film will be canned in Pune. The lead character of the film is a 12 year old boy and the story revolves around the spiritual way of looking at our life. It is a great thing that the powerful and cash rich Hindi Tinsel Town has started to stand as support pillar to a small Marathi film Industry. The Marathi Cinema by not imitating and blindly trying to follow Hindi Cinema and sticking on to its roots is creating a fine balance between various genres of films to grow and gain popularity in its own terms.

Rajinikant helps Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan got shocked when he heard that Superstar Rajnikant's Tamil film 'Kuselan' has been wrapped up and will be releasing in August. Rajnikant's previous film 'Sivaji' although was a Tamil film managed to get unexpected attention of people from all over India. So the producers of 'Kuselan' had planned to release the Hindi dubbed version at the same time when the movie hits the cinema halls in south. 'Kuselan' is the remake of the Malyalam hit film 'Katha Parayumbol' so is King Khan's forthcoming film 'Billoo Barber'. Sharukh wanted to finish off the work of his film fast and get it released as a Diwali movie. And he was also confident of getting his film first to the theaters. Upon hearing that the Hindi version of 'Kuselan' will be reaching the theaters much before his film will get exposed, SRK panicked as if this happens the box office prospect of 'Billoo Barber' will get severely damaged due to having the same theme and story. Adding more intensity to his tension was that in both the films, the lead actors appear in 20 different looks in a single song. SRK had no other option than to make a call to the South Superstar and request him to change the north Indian release date of 'Kuselan'. Rajnikant considered Sharukh's request and assured him that his film will get to the halls only after Diwali.

Vishal helps Vidya overcome her fear

Vishal Bharadwaj is very strict about his character portrayals in the films produced by him. The director-producer sees to it that the actor actually learns the skills in reality and not fake it on screen. If Vishal made Saif learn the UP dialect including the expletives in Omkara, the director has made Vidya take driving lessons for Ishqiya. "Vidya was a complete phobic when it came to driving. She has acute road phobia. She was petrified at the thought of driving. The very thought of driving a car would send shivers down her spine. But not anymore! And it is all thanks to Vishal Bharadwaj. Driving a car was something that is completely alien to her. But Vishal saw to it that she mastered the art and now is pretty comfortable maneuvering her car on the road", says a source close to Vidya. Ever since then, Vidya hasn't stopped thanking Vishal for making her overcome her fears.
