Highway is Alia's 'Arth': Mahesh Bhatt

Not one to be blinded by parental affection, he is yet to give an acting break to his son Rahul, but filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt is clean-bowled by his youngest daughter Alia Bhatt's performance in Imtiaz Ali's "Highway". He said: "I saw Alia in 'Highway'. Alia overwhelms you with her heartbreaking sincerity. Her journey has begun. This is Alia's 'Arth'. Highway is a film that will sparkle in Alia's filmography." Alia's mother and actress-filmmaker Soni Razdan is set to direct the youngster in a film based on the notorious Nanavati murder case that shook Mumbai's beau monde way back in 1959. Pooja Bhatt will produce it. The original plan was to cast Alia with Randeep Hooda, but they were already doing "Highway" together, therefore, a hunt is on for another leading man to be paired with the actress. Interestingly, while conversing with Karan Johar on the latter's talk show Bhatt had described Imtiaz's “Rockstar” as the most overrated film. But he seems to have liked the director's “Highway” a lot more. He said: "It is an outstanding film. Imtiaz Ali staggers you with his simplicity. It is bare, harsh and truthful."

Highway takes lead at the box office

Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda-starrer "Highway" may not be a big grosser at the box office, but it is shinning brighter than Jimmy Sheirgill's “Darr@The Mall”, say trade pundits The Imtiaz Ali directorial has collected around Rs.15 crore in India, leaving “Darr@The Mall” far behind despite both films reportedly hitting around same number of screens i.e approximately 800 in the country Feb 21. “‘Darr@The Mall’ has earned around Rs.3.5 crore in four days. 'Highway' has collected between Rs.15 crore and Rs.15.5 crore,” Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said. Puneet Sahay of Spice Cinemas says “Highway”, co-produced by Imtiaz and Sajid Nadiadwala, picked up well on weekend. “The occupancy on the opening day was only 42 percent. It picked up on Saturday with 78 percent occupancy. ‘Highway’ did better on Sunday with 83 percent occupancy. The audience appreciated Alia’s acting and also the picturisation,” said Sahay and added: "On Monday, the occupancy dropped to 35 percent." "‘Darr@The Mall' is not doing well. It was around 20 percent in first three days and on Monday only 15 percent," he said. It’s not just the audiences, who were stunned by Alia’s screen presence, megastar Amitabh Bachchan also praised the 20-year-old in his tweet. “‘HtohP'(‘Hasee Toh Phasee') and 'Highway' ... two films back to back and did not want to come away from them. Parineeti and Alia ... gems,” Amitabh tweeted Sunday. Actress Raima Sen was spellbound too by Alia’s acting prowess in the film that also stars Randeep Hooda. “Saw ‘Highway'. Alia totally rocked! New star is born,” Raima tweeted Monday.

Imtiaz finds mixed response to 'Highway' positive

Director Imtiaz Ali is not affected by the mixed response that his latest film "Highway" is fetching in theatres. In fact, he believes it just shows that his film is making people think. "I had to make this film and I made it, and put in my best. Mixed reactions mean that people are thinking," the 42-year-old said here Saturday at a PVR Cinemas hall. Sounding nonchalant, the director said: "I have no problem with it. It's good that there are mixed reactions. At least there are opinions. It is actually dangerous when people just say, 'It's good'," he added. Imtiaz has co-produced "Highway" with Sajid Nadiadwala. The road movie stars Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda in lead roles.
