More news →Researchers outfit honey bees with RFID 'backpacks' in global health study
Honey bees are critical to pollinating a third of the world's food supply, but their population is on the decline due to unknown factors that are threatening their health. A research team lead by Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, is working with the Global Initiative for Honey Bee Health (GIHH) in a new study designed to identify factors that may be harming the global bee population. This decline in the bee population began in the late 1990s when beekeepers worldwide noticed a sudden and precipitous decrease in the number of bees and honey bee colonies. Research suggests pesticides, pathogens and climate change may contribute to this decline, but no single cause has been identified. This latest study will use small RFID micro-sensors that are attached to individual bees using tweezers and super glue. Each sensor is like a license plate, containing a unique code to identify individual bees in a larger population. The sensors do not interfere with the bee and will remain affixed for the duration of the bee's life. To collect behavioral data, the researchers will use solar-powered Intel Edison boards inside the hive and receivers placed in the vicinity of the hive to record the movements of the bees. The data collected from this sensor system will help scientists identify stresses that influence the movement and behavioral patterns of the hives that are being studied. "The tiny technology allows researchers to analyze the effects of stress factors including disease, pesticides, air pollution, water contamination, diet and extreme weather on the movements of bees and their ability to pollinate," Professor Paulo de Souza, CSIRO Science Leader, said. "We're also investigating what key factors, or combination of factors, lead to bee deaths on mass." Initially, thousands of bees in Australia will be outfitted with these RFID backpacks in a multi-year initiative. Scientists hope to expand this program globally to 1000 hives worldwide with more than 2.5 million bees equipped with this tracking technology.
Honey Singh offers bonanza for Akshay's 'Shaukeen'

Akshay, who has repeatedly collaborated with Honey Singh in the past, requested the rapper-performer for one special number in the Abhishek Sharma-directed remake of Basu Chatterjee's "Shaukeen". In the new movie, Akshay is paired with Lisa Haydon. The rapper insisted on doing three songs instead of one. "Anything for a friend. And there are two stars in Bollywood for whom I'd do anything. Akshay and Shah Rukh bhai (Shah Rukh Khan) are like my brothers. When Akshay requested me to do one song, I told him, 'Ek kyun, teen le lo (Why one, take three)'. I feel my tuning with Akshay is such that he is able to put a face to what I sing as effectively as I do," he said. Honey Singh also flew down specially to be with his other favourite Shah Rukh Khan in Abu Dhabi last week for the IPL match and the after-party. "I was in Dubai when Shah Rukh bhai invited me for the match and the after-party. It was fun unlimited," he said.

Versatile actor Akshay Kumar apparently refused choreographer- turned-director Ganesh Acharya, when he approached him for an item number in his film- 'Money Hai Toh Honey Hai'. While Akshay was busy finishing the shooting schedules for two of his films Singh is Kinng and 8X10, Ganesh Acharya visited one of his sets and asked him to do an item number in 'Money Hai Toh Honey Hai'. Akshay the money-maker who wanted his price, asked the director to fix him a meeting with producer Kumar Mangat if they wanted to sign him in their film. The actor quoted a price ranging between 1-1.5 crores for this number. Known for his versatile style this actor surely wanted what he deserved. Well' what now remains is whether the makers of this film will be ready to go ahead with the actor and his price.
Allu Arjun and Trivikram Movie is Honey
Allu Arjun and Trivikram Srinivas movie titled Honey?Rumor-mongers has it saying going that stylish star Allu Arjun's new movie directed by Trivikram is titled 'Honey'. Reports say that producer DVV Danayya has registered this title ‘Honey’ under his Universal Media Banner recently at Film Chamber and this has lead to a speculation that this could be the title for Allu Arjun and Trivikram's movie However, none of the unit members have confirmed anything on this. Devi Sri Prasad is scoring the music for this movie in which Allu Arjun will be playing a uber cool lad with a happy go lucky attitude. On the female lead, the makers are yet to announce officially although it is being rumored that either Ileana or Samantha would be play heroine besides Allu Arjun. Moreover, the makers of this on the brink of announcing the final cast and crew before hitting the shooting floors in September.
