Traffic Signal in January

After making you visit the board rooms in 'Corporate' early this years, Madhur Bhandarkar has different plans next year. Come January and he has plans to make you visit a 'TRAFFIC SIGNAL' and look at the lives of people living their life there. Earlier there were indications that his Kunal Khemu - Neetu Chandra starrer 'Traffic Signal' would be coming before the year ends but the latest confirmation has come just from the horse's mouth. Madhur says, "There was nothing fixed as such regarding December being confirmed. And now it has been decided that the film will be coming in the first week of January. The promotion of the film would begin in November end". 'Traffic Signal' also stars Konkana Sen, Upendra Limaye, Ranveery Shourey and Sudhir Misra in principal roles.

Munnabhais bail extended till January 18th

Destiny's child Sanjay Dutt has got a brief reprieve from a Terrorism and Disruptive Activities Acts Court today as it extended his bail till January 18th, 2007. As is well known Sanjay had been found guilty under Arms Act for possession of an AK 56 rifle and a 9 mm pistol in the 1993 Bomb blast case. He had been granted bail to surrender till December 19th. He had made an application on December 18th asking for time to surrender till the case ends or the final verdict is announced. He had cited several reasons why he should be showed leniency. Top most being the arrival of his daughter Trishala on December 23rd. Dutt's lawyers are making all efforts to ensure that the actor gets little or no punishment when the final verdict is announced. Sanjay on his part has been making all the right moves. Getting clicked with underprivileged children or performing hawan at Siddhivinayak Temple, he seems to be determined to put the ghost of 1993 bomb blast case firmly behind him. For now, he must be looking forward to a relaxed new year.

Box Office Analysis-January 04 , 2007

First weekend performance of latest release 'I See You' was the sole release of the week but as expected it didn't arrive with any kind of bang! In fact let alone the bang, there wasn't even a slight noise of any kind as it opened to a cold response all over. In fact the film's reception was so poor that 'I See You' hardly seemed like an A project with Arjun Rampal in the lead and foreign locales as its strong point. There were always apprehensions about the film taking anything more than a 50% opening but what came as an absolute shocker was near empty houses that welcomed the film. The film has hardly generated any kind of positive response [except for Arjun's performance] from any section of media while audience has hardly watched it to pass their judgment. A poor end to a very good year for Bollywood! Last week's movies It was first mentioned in this section that 'Bhagam Bhag' would comfortably out-gross Priyadarshan's biggest success 'Garam Masala'. With an excellent 21 crore + first week, it should be able to do so in 2 or at maximum 3 weeks as the film has proved to be a runaway success for Priyan, Akshay, Govinda and Paresh. Mumbai was tremendous with a 4 crore + total while Delhi that had been thirsting for a true blue masala entertainer for long due to an uneven release of 'Dhoom 2', lapped it up to contribute more than 2 crores. Delhi NCR came third with 1.5 crores in total while Ahmedabad was quite good too with 1 crore +. The film has registered good first week numbers across A, B and C centers, something which is a hall mark of a universal success. With 'I See You' hardly proving to be a competition and no worthwhile release before January 12th [when 'Guru', 'Risk' and 'Anwar' arrive], 'Bhagam Bhag' should prove to be a 'bhag'-away hit. Akshay Kumar has another success under his belt now while Govinda makes a successful comeback, with or without all of his scenes! From the past It was quite obvious that 'Kabul Express' won't necessarily take a fall similar to a regular commercial film. A bigger fall in collections was expected and hence after a 7 crore first week, the film slid down to 2.5 crores in collections. Still, no shame here for this extremely well directed film by Kabir Khan who has impressed one and all with his very first feature film and is now much sought after in 2007. The film is now a shade below 10 crores but should manage to drag along due to few more open weeks ahead. The film held on best in Mumbai where it registered 85 lakhs after a 2 crore opening week but is a near washout in Delhi where it garnered just about 3 lakhs. Expect the original DVDs and VCDs of the film to be out in a 3-4 weeks time. In it's second week, 'Aryan - The Unbreakable' has been completely broken and registered a measly 15 lakhs. At just about 1 crore, it is a disaster for Sohail Khan on the same lines as 'I - Proud To Be Indian'. Sneha Ullal, who started off with a hit in the form of 'Lucky - No Time For Love' now has a miss in 'Aryan - The Unbreakable'. 'Babul' crashed completely in its 3rd week and zero interest shown by anyone from the cast or crew to help in further promoting the film and keeping the audience's interest alive in watching it at theatres further proved that everyone had resigned to fate. With just 1 crore coming from the entire country, a 16.5 crore current total of 'Babul' is just not impressive. The beginning and end of year was just not happy for Amitabh Bachchan as he saw both 'Family - Ties Of Blood' and 'Baabul' performing poorly at the box office. With no new releases other than 'Bhagam Bhag' working universally at the box office, it was a great opportunity for 'Dhoom 2' to consolidate on its now-biggest-grosser status. Apart from a 21 crore week for 'Bhagam Bhag', 'D2' was the only film to register good numbers as it collected 4 crores in its 5th week. The film did quite well in both Mumbai [65 lakhs] and Delhi [57 lakhs]. Standing firm at 80 crores and still counting, it has set a huge benchmark for newer films to follow. Million dollar question is - will the record be broken in 2007? 'Vivah' is now not just 'a journey from engagement to marriage' but 'a dream journey' for everyone who has been associated with the film. With a nominal 20% fall and the 7th week registering more than 1.5 crore, 'Vivah' is now just a shade below 25 crores. The biggest surprise success of the year gone by. In the future 'Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana' is the sole release of the coming week but it is not even getting a decent chain of theatres for itself. This Rekha-Mahima-Kim-Vasundhara starrer chic-flick is not coming at majority of multiplexes which tells the tale. No fireworks whatsoever are expected from the film.

Box Office Analysis-January 11 , 2007

First weekend performance of latest release There was absolutely no surprise when 'Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana' came on Friday and opened to miserable houses. A stuck project with minimal publicity and practically zero awareness, the film marks a disastrous beginning to 2007. The film doesn't stand a run beyond one week at the theaters. There was another small time film called 'Game' [starring Sameer Dharmadhikari, Sherlyn Chopra] that released at select theatres but met with a similar fate at the box office on its opening weekend. Last week's movies 'I See You' came as a dampener at the very end of a highly successful 2006. If the opening was miserable, the following days too didn't see any footfalls to cheer about. Releasing at select theatres across the country, the film couldn't even cross 1 crore mark as it wrapped up its first week at a shade above 75 lakhs. In an age when a solitary B center with decent credentials can generate as much revenue in an opening week, it was highly disappointing to see Arjun Rampal's debut production sinking without a trace. Both Mumbai and Pune came up with approximate 11.5 lakhs while Delhi couldn't even cross 10 lakhs. One feels sorry for the leading actress Vipasha who was off the press before the film's release and now is hardly talked about due to massive blow taken by the film at the box office. From the past 'Bhagam Bhag' is the sole movie that is running across India with decent collections to show. After a 21 crore first week, the film took a little less than 50% fall to end at 12 crores. This has proved that the film has held itself well due to sheer appreciation from the paying public. Never mind the critics backlash it got on it's release; just like 'Malamaal Weekly', 'Bhagam Bhag's is yet another audience hit for director Priyadarshan. Standing at 33 crores, the film is now hit at the box office and marks a positive comeback for Govinda. Meanwhile Akshay Kumar has only consolidated his superstar position with the film doing very good business in A centers like Mumbai [around 2.5 crores] & Delhi [1.25 crores] and even other B and C centers. Suniel Shetty now has reasons to smile since he has first hit to his credit as a producer after the downfall of 'Khel' and 'Rakht'. With zero competition from the new releases, 'Kabul Express' held on well in the 3rd week by dropping less than 50% from the second week. The film collected around 1.5 crores and has now crossed 11 crores to be categorized as an average success. The film's biggest success zone is Mumbai from where it generated more than 50 lakhs. On the other hand Delhi surprised as it moved up from 3 lakhs to around 7 lakhs. One wonders if the collections revealed from the city last week were accurate and came from all the theatres. Another surprise that is baffling many is that while Arshad Warsi was clearly the film's lead with John in a supporting role, it is being assumed/termed otherwise in numerous sections of media. Not fair! With even Salman Khan coming and accepting 'Baabul' to be an all India flop, there is absolutely no debate left about the film's performance at the Indian box office. The film continued to sink to lower depths as it collected just about 65 lakhs in it's 4th week. After barely crossing 17 crores, the film should be only dealing in a few lakhs or so to end below 17.5 crores. A rare failure for a film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee together in principal roles. The film may just about manage to do well on the satellite medium once it is premiered on the small screen. Meanwhile 'Dhoom 2' continued to add to its tally with more than 2.5 crores being added to its 80 crore total of last week. At 82 crores, the film should manage to touch 85 crore mark in its final run. In fact the film was most consistent at Mumbai [50 lakhs] and Delhi [45 lakhs] where it slid down just marginally from 65 lakhs and 57 lakhs respectively. It is 50 days for Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao as their 'Vivah' showed a jump from its 6th week total of 1.5 crore to 1.8 crores. A rare happening in the world of Hindi cinema, especially in today's market. At 25 crores, the film is a Superhit all over the country. Now would that prompt Sooraj Barjatya to continue making family films for his banner or would he be diversifying into different genres? As a film lover, one would want him to opt for the latter and surprise the audience! In the future First big release for 2007 comes in the form of 'Guru' and all eyes are set on the film to see if it turns out to be a worthy follow-up to many a superhit films that 2006 has given to audience. Mani Ratnam may not have tasted success at Hindi movies box office but while 'Dil Se' is now almost considered as a classic with re-runs on satellite medium and 'Yuva' being a case study for cinema students, the tables have turned around for the director! This proves that his films were probably way ahead of their times but boasted of high quality nevertheless. If one looks from sheer commercial point of view, 'Guru' seems to be a much more comfortable box office bet than the two aforementioned films. The delay has only helped in film's publicity picking up in a big way and the star power and hit music should ensure that film takes a good 70-80% opening. Other release of the week is 'Anwar' and though its postponement from December to January has helped in creating awareness about it, it still is not the kind of film that many would love to flock on the day of its release. The film looks promising with good performances and story telling but a dark/disturbing theme coupled with lack of star factor would go against a safe opening.

Box office analysis-January 04 , 2008

First weekend performance of latest release Animation films are not working in India. Well, just about. After a flash in the form of HANUMAN which made some waves two years back, there has been a splurge of animation films in the form of KRISHNA, BAL GANESHA, MY FRIEND GANESHA etc. but none of them have worked at the box office. In fact if one leaves aside BAL GANESHA, none of the other films have much to cheer about when it comes to quality of animation. Latest release RETURN OF HANUMAN turned out to be no different and an uninspiring buzz just paved the way for a no-show at the box office. The film hasn't even got an opening, let aside some word of mouth to help it sustain at all, and in the process has turned out to be the last flop of 2007. SHOWBIZ was even poorer and has now turned out to be yet another big box office disaster for the Bhatts after DHOKHA in the year gone by. There was complete disinterest shown even by the makers who seemed to have lost confidence in the project even as it was being readied to reach the finishing line. Newcomer Tushar Jalota was average too and the film being plain bad even as it had a wonderful subject (expose of media) in hand. Result? A maximum one week runner which won't find any takers even on DVD circuits. Last week's movies It's confirmed. WELCOME v/s TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has indeed turned out to be GADAR v/s LAGAAN situation revisited in it's true format. Both the films have brought cheers at the box office with the winters heating up the theater screens in a big way. Let's talk about WELCOME first. The film is now Akshay Kumar's biggest ever box office opener and is next only to OM SHANTI OM when it comes to all time best opening for a Bollywood film. At an astonishing first week billing which has crossed 35 crores, WELCOME has done close to 90% business of Anees Bazmee's last superhit NO ENTRY in one week flat. Coming to the week gone by, WELCOME was exceptional across all centers whether it was Mumbai (~6 crores), Delhi (~3 crores), Delhi NCR (~2.5 crores), Kolkota (~1.25 crores), Ahmedabad (~2 crores), Pune (~2 crores), Bangalore (~ 1 crore) or Hyderabad (~1 crore). With 50 crores total to be surpassed in 2 weeks itself and no notable release till 25th January (when SUNDAY arrives), 70 crores is the minimum that WELCOME would be aiming for from this point on. Also, credit definitely must go to Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor who were the true heroes of the film when it came to getting some of the best lines and scenes to enact. Meanwhile TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has only grown from strength to strength the moment opening Friday came to a close. Getting critical acclaim, love from audience and appreciation across all quarters, this directorial venture of Aamir Khan is all set to be a 'lambi race ka ghoda' and is expected to show minimal fall in weeks to follow. The film has been tremendous in Mumbai from where it earned over 4 crores. Meanwhile Delhi too has held fort with more 2.5 crores coming in. Bangalore has pleasantly surprised though with 1 crore + as the first week billing. Releasing mainly at multiplexes and coming at only 40% of the screens in comparison to WELCOME, the film has earned over 16 crores, hence proving to be yet another success for Aamir Khan. From the past STRANGERS has turned out to be a box office disaster and in the process brings an end to a year which Jimmy Sheirgill would want to forget. With a series of box office failures behind him (DELHII HEIGHTS, VICTORIA NO. 203, CHODDON NAA YAAR, STRANGERS), the only silver lining for Jimmy is the critical acclaim he has received even for worst of his films. With a no-show in the second week, STRANGERS has ended it's run at mere 44 lakhs. In a week which was dominated by WELCOME and TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, DUS KAHANIYAAN has shown a huge fall too (~95%) and is now staring at a DVD release. In fact that is one market where the film is expected to do quite well though at box office, the film has folded up at 10 crores by adding only a little over 10 lakhs in the week gone by. Comparatively AAJA NACHLE, a film was released before DUS KAHANIYAAN, has still managed to stay on in the Top-5 even after falling by 80%. With 30 lakhs more coming in, the film has touched 16 crores but won't have an extended run form this point on. GOAL earned only 10 lakhs more and is ending it's run marginally below 17 crores. Meanwhile in the week which led to OM SHANTI OM completing 50 days at the box office, the film finally crossed the all time high total of DHOOM 2 and is now only a little below 86 crores. With 50 lakhs in it's kitty after taking a mighty 70% fall due to WELCOME/TZP euphoria, the film is now looking at a DVD release. Ironically, when all the movies from the past fell by 70% or more, the only film to see a little less than 70% decline was JAB WE MET. With the film continuing to make an impression both at the DVD stands and theaters, the film added another 30 lakhs to it's total of 30 crores. In the future With January first week jinx scaring away makers from releasing any of their films, there are no new notable releases this weekend.

Box office analysis-January 10 , 2008

First weekend performance of latest release With January first week jinx scaring away makers from releasing any of their films, there were no new notable releases this weekend. Last week's movies The flop record for movies releasing on last Friday of the year remained intact even in 2007 with both RETURN OF HANUMAN and SHOWBIZ turning out to be box office disasters. Neither of the two even took a decent opening; let aside showing any sustainable business as the first week came to close. Yet again, Anurag Kashyap went ahead and made statements about him being unhappy about his own film. Surprisingly, this came within the first weekend of RETURN OF HANUMAN being released. Not that his saying otherwise would have made much of a difference since the audience had already given the film a thumbs down. Opening at only a little above 1.25 crores, the film had it's maximum moolah coming from Mumbai (~50 lakhs) whereas Delhi got home only around 13 lakhs. On the very first day of it's release, SHOWBIZ would have been forgotten even by the Bhatts, let alone making any mark with the audience. Seemingly an excess baggage which Bhatts wanted to dispose off in the year gone by, SHOWBIZ now officially qualifies as their biggest ever box office disaster. With miserly collections of 25 lakhs that saw an embarrassing 6 lakhs coming from Mumbai (the film registered it's highest collections here when compared to rest of the country), SHOWBIZ turned out to be hardly the kind of business which newcomer Tushar Jalota would have wanted to be a part of! Even though there were no notable releases last week, chances of RETURN OF HANUMAN or SHOWBIZ to show some signs of survival are absolutely nil. From the past What a week for Bollywood when it comes to two films belonging to entirely different genres raking moolah in a big way at the box office! Both WELCOME and TAARE ZAMEEN PAR stayed on to be terrific in their week two, hence ensuring that business wise Bollywood got it's best ever fortnight. While in week one, both the films had collectively earned more than 51 crores at the box office, week two was excellent too with 35 crores coming between the two films. This makes it more than 85 crores in a single fortnight for Bollywood, the best ever in history of India cinema! Coming to WELCOME, the film held on very well and though cynics may term ~40% as a fall, the fact remains that the film still earned close to 22 crores in the second week. When hardly 10 films in a year cross the 20 crores mark in their first week, WELCOME has achieved this feat in it's second week after a bumper 35 crores first week, hence touching 57 crores in two weeks flat. Collections were strong all ever again with Mumbai (~3.75 crores), Delhi (~ 2 crores), Delhi NCR (! 1 crore) and Ahmedabad (~1 crore) continuing to be super strong along with rest of the country. The film is now the biggest ever earner for Akshay Kumar and though he would (rightly) share the credit for the film's success with Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar, the fact remains that WELCOME has achieved a blockbuster status for itself. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is not far behind either and if one looks at the kind of budget spent on the film, a two week total of close to 30 crores (with 13 crores + coming in the week gone by) means that the film is a clear super hit and not too far away from the blockbuster status. The film hardly took a fall in the week gone by and stayed on relatively consistent with less than 20% drop. In Mumbai and Delhi, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is now neck to neck with WELCOME and crossed 3.25 crores and 2 crores respectively. The film should continue to register consistent collections even for weeks to come with no noticeable drop. In it's 5th week, AAJA NACHLE showed signs of making a sad exit from theaters across the country. With barely 10 lakhs coming that didn't do much to it's 16 crores total, the film is seeing a DVD release this week. Same holds good for GOAL too which has exited a shade below 17 crores and is now available on home entertainment. At 86 crores, OM SHANTI OM completed 50 days at the box office while gaining another 25 lakhs mainly on the basis of weekend audience strength. The film has set new benchmarks for Shahrukh Khan and his next big release would certainly be targeting the 100 crore mark. On the other hand Shahid Kapoor, who has given two back to 30 crores super hits (VIVAH and JAB WE MET), would be having a 50 crore milestone in mind. Would his KISMET KONNECTION turn out to be that film? In the future Ideally a film starring Ajay Devgan in a Raj Kumar Santoshi venture would have arrived amidst immense hype and created quite some buzz. Unfortunately this cannot be said about HALLA BOL which in spite of looking like a quality product isn't making much of a pre-release fizz! The film looks extreme at the moment - either too good or below the mark. There aren't much hopes about the opening here and chances aren't too high about the film making much of a mark at the box office. Same holds good for MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES too which in spite of being promoted reasonably well appears to be a dated film. Also, there isn't much clarity around whether the genre of the film is comedy, gang war, action or drama! Yet again, there isn't much expectation from either an opening or sustenance stand point.
