Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez will be seen having special powers in her next Bollywood venture “Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai”. No, she doesn’t play superwoman…she plays a woman from planet Venus! Writer-director Milap Zaveri says his film is not a sci-fi action movie but a romantic comedy about Tara, a girl from Venus who comes to Earth in search of love. And that’s why he didn’t want his heroine to do daredevil stunts but she does have some super abilities – the Venus woman has the power to freeze time. “‘Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai’ is a love story rather than a superwoman story. So there was no point indulging in anything that would have made Jackie (as Jacqueline is fondly called) appear to be overtly larger than life. Yes, she is different in a lot of senses and hence there had to be something special attached to her. However, we didn’t want anything too gimmicky about her behaviour or persona,” Zaveri said. Jumping from rooftops, dodging bullets, hopping across skyscrapers, taking on 200 baddies at a time and indulging in gravity-defying stunts were a complete no-no for the makers of the film. As they started exploring various options, the one that struck the right chord was the concept of ‘time freeze’. “We thought that this would be a nice touch to the character, especially so because it would work with kids as well as adults alike. “Also, we could use this character trait in different moods and situations in the film, whether a funny sequence, a romantic moment or an emotional encounter. Once we decided to go ahead with ‘time freeze’, it was a matter of improvising on the script while incorporating this trait,” said Zaveri, who has written either the script or dialogues of films like “Masti”, “Kaante”, “Jhankaar Beats” and “Heyy Babyy”. “Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai” sees Jacqueline paired opposite Riteish Deshmukh, who had acted with the former Miss Sri Lanka in her debut film “Aladin” as well. So what are the sequences where Jacqueline ends up freezing time? While Zaveri tells us to wait and watch, a source attached to the film said: “There are some humorous as well as beautiful moments in the film when Jackie freezes time. One of the hilarious sequences is where she saves Riteish in an accident. Then there is also a point where the two eventually realize their love for each other…”. Also starring Ruslaan Mumtaz, Sonal Sehgal and Vishal Malhotra in principal roles, ‘Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai’ boasts of a number of guest appearances – Farah Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sajid Khan, Amrita Rao, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Vidya Balan. With music by Sajid-Wajid, the film is set to release April 9.
PNC to promote Guerilla Flicks
Pritish Nandy has launched a production to promote unconventional films, i.e. which don't looks to appeal or commercially viable. It is named as guerilla flicks not as gorilla flicks to summarize the objective behind the action. What it means to audience of cinema? Nandy is disappointed with big money and its subsequent influence on cinema. He would like give a boost up to scripts that contain big cinema with small budgets. Nandy already associated with Sujoy Ghosh in "Jhankaar Beats", Saket Chaudhary in "Pyaar Ke Side Effects" and Sudhir Mishra in "Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi", will now gives opportunity to much audacious directors. They have already selected 10 scripts and Arindam Mitra doing the first one currently. The finalized scripts contain names of frontline advertisements creators apart from many others. However, there is a risk element about introducing new creators involved, Nandy predicts that so far PNC bite twice alone, hence it is not afraid of fall.
Orion Pictures to produce 6 films in 2008
Mukesh Talreja and Nikhil Advani, Directors of Orion Pictures Private Limited today announced a slate of 6 films to be produced by them in the next 12 months. The company is all geared up on the production of these six films, two out of which are already under production. Orion Pictures was formed in 2005 with Mukesh Talreja and Nikhil Advani at the helm of all company activities. 'Salaam E Ishq' was the first film under the banner while others include the Akshay Kumar starrer 'Chandni Chowk to China', 'Ab Dilli Door Nahin' and the line up of the four new films which are going on floors in the near future. While the prestigious 'Chandni Chowk to China' presented by Warner Brothers and their big animation project 'Ab Dilli Door Nahi' are already on the floors, Orion Pictures has now commissioned four more projects that are slated to go on floors in the next few months. The third film from the Orion bouquet of films to hit the floors in April/May 2008 would be Milap Milan Zaveri's 'Jaane Kahan se Aayi hai!' This film would mark Milap Milan Zaveri's debut as a director after a number of successful films as a writer, such as 'Heyy Babyy', 'Masti', 'Jhankaar Beats' and 'Kaante'. Milap Zaveri says on the venture, 'There are a lot of love stories between the rich and poor, caste and creed but nothing that is out of the world. So I came up with a twist to the popular concept of 'Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus'. I kept the man from Earth and the Woman from Venus'. Ritesh Deshmukh plays the guy from planet Earth while Ayesha Takia is the girl from Venus. Weaved around the concept of an alien searching for love from an earthling, the story is written with a lot of good humor and emotions that the young generation of today can connect with. The film also stars a promising new comer, Ruslaan Mumtaz. Said Mukesh Talreja, 'At Orion we are looking at working with a host of fresh talent including new directors. There is a huge untapped talent in the country. And we believe that a successful writer like Milap will prove to be a very talented film maker with a bright future'. The other three films form an interesting package which we intend to make public soon and shall go on floors in the next few months. This would include a film to be directed by Nikhil Advani, Vikramiditya Motwane, and Shivam Nair. The details of which will be announced at a later date. Nikhil Advani emphasizes, 'Entertainment is what we intend to focus at Orion. We intend to make quality films with new talent as well as the existing talent. Our emphasis will be on making films of all genres which will satiate the palette of all kinds of audiences.
Box Office Analysis - II
From the past 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects' took a 50% industry standard fall and cashed in another 2 crore to its last week's 4 crore total. At 6 crores, its now an above average runner for PNC and brings Saket Chaudhary to the same league as Sujoy Ghosh was years back when he had a success in the form of 'Jhankaar Beats', again with PNC. The side effect of the film is quite big in fact - Mallika has now been acknowledged as an actor! One just wonders if the movie would have been a much bigger success if only it was released as per its original release plans i.e. around 6 weeks back! 'Shiva' took a 90% fall and would end at a total less than that of 'James'. Biggest flop of RGV as a director since one can remember, the film is now around 2.75 crore but would certainly not cross the 3 crore mark. For RGV and Mohit Ahlawat, it is now of paramount importance that they get it right together with 'Sholay'. 'Bas Ek Pal' is a disaster with the 2 week total standing at just above 60 lakhs. 'Naksha' fell further by 60% but even a 3 week total of 10 crore is quite less for this expensive film to be called coverage at the least. Though in a couple of territories it has managed to break even or even earn profits, at an all India level it is a flop. If only Sunny and Vivek were saleable today with a better promotion as a booster, the fate of 'Naksh' would have been exceptionally better. 'Dil Diya Hai' is a disaster as it ends it run at a sub 2.5 crore total. Weekly collections of 'Lagey Raho Munabhai' from big cities still run in crores, that too in its 4th week! With a mere 35% fall, the movie bagged in another 7.5 crores and now has touched 55 crores! Tremendous. Mumbai continues to be astonishing with 1.5 crore whereas Delhi too had 1 crore to contribute. With collections of the week gone by looking promising and 2 more open weeks before Diwali/Eid release arrive, the film is all set to fight it out with 'Krrish' at the box office which is still year's biggest money spinner at 65 crores! KANK has completed 50 days at the box office and should exit with a 47 crore total in the long run. In the future There is no calm before the storm with at least 6 films and a documentary vying for screen space this Friday. There is a mad rush before October 20th arrives though it is quite obvious that 99% of them would hardly find a screen to play with both 'Don' and 'Jaan-e-man' coming with record prints. Nevertheless, 'Zindaggi Rocks' s the best bet of the week mainly due to Sushmita Sen and Shiney Ahuja's presence. Still, the buzz is hardly rocking to give this film a heartening start. 'Jaana - Let's Fall In Love' and 'Iqrar - By Chance' have some factors in common - they both have newcomers in the leads and boast of good music. Out of the two, the former is at least better promoted and may have an edge. 'Mera Dil Leke Dekkho' comes without informing at all and there are hardly any enthusiasts to 'take' the 'dil'! 'Bhoot Unkle' seems like a non-starter all the way. 'Seven Islands And A Metro' is a documentary film that would find a selective release and even selective audience. 'Gafla' is a film based on stock markets and it would be easy to count people on fingers who have even heard of this film.
What is Ahista Ahista about?
After an avalanche of biggies [Fanaa, Phir Hera Pheri, Krrish], it would be time for some smaller movies to make their presence felt in the Bollywood circuit. 'Ahista Ahista' is surely going to be one of them. The movie stars Abhay Deol, Soha Ali Khan and Shayan Munshi [his first major role after 'Jhankaar Beats'] in the lead. It is a romantic flick about two very unlikely people who develop feelings for each other in a gradual manner. Wanna know more about these two characters? Abhay Deol - A young simple guy who works as, guess what, a witness in a marriage registration office! Soha Ali Khan - A small town girl who elopes with her boyfriend [Shayan Munshi], only to be ditched by him in the city! And now it's about time that the two to start come closer. No wonder, slowly-slowly [ahista-ahista], their hearts start beating for each other!
PNC and Rahul Bose come together for the 4th time
PNC has always prided itself on coming up with diverse subjects for each of their films. 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects' is one such film that is getting readied to hit the marquee! A romantic comedy, it is notable for its lead pair of Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat. Another interesting aspect about the film is that it is for the fourth time that PNC and Rahul Bose are joining hands. The association has been seen earlier in Mumbai Matinee [sex comedy], Jhankaar Beats [friendship comedy] and Chameli [love story of a corporate guy and a street prostitute]. Directed by Saket Chaudhary, PKSE is one more comedy about pre-marital and marital relationships that should be the talk of the town soon!
