Kalki Koechlin: National Award makes me feel more 'desi'

Atress Kalki Koechlin, who has been conferred with a Special Jury Award at the 63rd National Film Awards for her performance in 'Margarita, With A Straw', says this will make people stop questioning her "desiness". "It's a really big deal for me... I think this is the most prestigious award you can get as an actor in this country. It makes me feel more 'desi'. I feel like people will stop questioning my 'desiness'," Kalki, who received the award, told IANS to a query on how important the award was for her." Talking about the film in which she plays the role of a girl with cerebral palsy, she shared that the film was important for her as she got to learn a lot as an actor and a human being. "It ('Margarita, With A Straw') was an important film for me. I learnt a lot as an actor and a human being. The amount of practice I had to do for that film was incredible. It just shows that how much more work we can put into every film," said Kalki, who was dressed in an off-white sari with green border." Kalki will next be seen sharing screen space with veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in 'Waiting'. She has called the 66-year-old actor a "fantastic person".

Kalki Koechlin's Pak connection

After tackling cerebral palsy in her last film, 'Margarita, With a Straw', Kalki Koechlin is now Pakistan-bound. The 32-year-old actress features in filmmaker Sabiha Sumar's (of Khamosh Pani fame) next, 'Azmaish - Trials of Life', that sees the duo travel through India and its neighbour, exploring the two countries through their lifestyles, religious dynamics, and violence stemming from extremism. "This project had been in the works for three years. When I met Kalki as a jury member at MAMI (Mumbai Film Festival) last year, she struck me as someone who empathises with the world and is concerned about its issues. When I told her about the idea for my film she immediately came on board as the Indian partner. She visited Pakistan for the first time earlier this year and we travelled across deserts and mountains. The idea was to capture how two women feel the pulse of the two countries," Sabiha informed Mirror, adding that while she picked out the Pakistani locations to shoot the film, Kalki took care of spots across the border. "Kalki picked out the Indian locations along with our research team. We shot in a Mumbai local, in a truck in Sindh and played Holi with the fishermen community in Mumbai. A part of the film is yet to be shot. We have now resorted to crowd-funding through which people contributing more than $250 will get access to stills from the shoot which are shot by a top photographer," the filmmaker signs off.

Abhay is a natural actor: Kalki Koechlin

Dev D” fame actress Kalki Koechlin, who is sharing screen space with Abhay Deol again in “Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara”, feels her co-star is quite natural in front of the camera. “It was nice working with Abhay again. We are used to working with each other so now we know what each other does best so we help each other out. He is a very natural actor and that’s the best thing about him,” Kalki said. The 27-year-old Indian actress of French descent starred opposite Abhay in director Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed 2009 Hindi film “Dev D”, a modern take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Bengali novel “Devdas”. While Kalki played Chandramukhi, Abhay featured as Devdas. In director Zoya Akhtar’s “Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara”, Kalki worked with a female director for the first time and says it turned out to be great fun. “It was superb working with Zoya Akhtar. It’s so much fun because she is so down to earth and also listens to girls,” quipped the actress, who was here with beau Kashyap for the launch of the talent portal Tumbhi. When asked what role is she playing in Tumbhi, Kalki said: “Absolutely nothing. I’m just a loyal girlfriend. I showed up because Anurag asked me to. It’s a good concept. “At the end of the day everything in this industry happens through connections so talented people who are new to the city have to find someone who has some connection with the film industry.” She feels the portal will work as a bridge between wannabes and the film industry. “It’s so hard for someone new to survive in this industry. When I was new here, it was so hard. I was clueless. I didn’t know what was going on. I used to sit at Prithvi Theatre every day finding out things and there was no set way of doing it. “This portal just makes it easier. For any artist it is useful. It is economical, you can just upload stuff from your home. It is very practical,” said Kalki.
