Girish Karnad honored by UNESCO

One of the Icons of Indian Arts and Culture Girish Karnad has been honored with ambassadorship of UNESCO's International Theatre Institute. The Paris based organization in a unique way has absolutely honored about a dozen other personalities including British theatre and film director Peter Brook, Italian playwright Dario Fo, French theatrical legend Ariane Mnouchkine and German choreographer Pina Bausch. Karnad, who is 70, has a credit of Pan Indian theater personality since his plays have been translated and produced in several languages over the span of forty years. He has been honored with Sangeet Natak Akademy in 1972, Padma Sri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Jnanpith Award in 1998. He also associated with parallel films and acted along with Nasrudeen Shah, Om Puri and others and had vast appearance in regional language films including Tamil.

"Kuruvi" in Karnataka

Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay and Dream Girl of south India Trisha starrer "Kuruvi", is the hottest property of the industry at present. Last week we reported that the movie was sold to a whooping amount of Rs 1.50 crore in Kerala. Now the movie has fetched Rs 1.20 crore towards Karnataka rights. 'Mandya' Srikanth, a Tamil film distributor in Karnataka, who owns Nanda and Yuvasri theatres in Mandya, has purchased the distribution rights of "Kuruvi". It is officially announced that "Kuruvi", produced by Udayanidhi Stalin under the banner of Red Giant Movies and directed by Dharani, would hit the halls somewhere between April and May (during Tamil month Chithirai). The makers of "Kuruvi" have made it official through print ads that appeared on Sunday in the leading newspapers.

'Kuselan' in Karnataka

With all decks cleared for the release of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth's film 'Kuselan' on Thursday evening after the actor expressed regret about the statements he had made in a protest meeting in Chennai, the movie released amidst fanfare in Bangalore and elsewhere in Karnataka. The Karnataka region Tamil rights for the film has been bought by Mr. Niranjan with a price range of Rs.1.5 to 2 crores. On Friday morning Mr Niranjan arranged a special screening of 'Kuselan' at the Arjun Arts Studio near 18th cross Malleswaram. As expected the crowd for the 4.30 pm show of 'Kuselan' was not all that good because of the eclipse. The movie is expected to do very well in Karnataka as well.

Ajith gets a place in Karnataka Shiva Temple

Thala Ajith has dismantled his official fan clubs back in 2011 but that has not stopped the voluntary functioning of fan clubs and fans organising various welfare activities and celebrations in the name of Ajith. Now ten Thala fan clubs in the neighbouring state of Karnataka have united to do something unique, unusual and also auspiciou to show their love and respect for Thala. They have erected a Shivalinga for Ajith in Sri Kotilingeshwara temple located at Kolar, Karnataka. The fans performed abhishekam and poojas for the lord Shiva in the form of Lingaa after erecting it. They claim that they have done this to stress the good ideals propounded by Ajith which should be followed by his fans. There are around 92 lakh Lingaas erected in the temple and the temple administration is aiming for one crore Lingaas. Earlier Shivalingaas have been erected by fan clubs of Superstar Rajinikanth and Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan under the names of their respective matinee idols. It is said that some over enthusiastic fans erected the idols of their stars a few years back and due to public resistance for that, the Temple authorities had banned fans of cine stars to errect Shivalingaas in the temple. Ajith fans acquired the permission after a long struggle.

Karnataka Naxal leader Vasant Goudlu killed in police encounter

Karkala (Karnataka), March 1 (ANI): The Anti Naxal Force (ANF) gunned down a wanted Naxal leader Vasant Goudlu in an encounter near Muniyal in Karnataka’s Udupi district on Monday evening. The ANF also believes that another wanted Naxal leader Vikram Goudlu and Vasant’s sister Sundari managed to flee from the sight. On a tip-off police surrounded three Naxals in Maroli Jaddu forest area in Karkala taluk of the district. An ANF personnel was also injured in the encounter. Police recovered one self-loading rifle (SLR), three magazines and a handbag from the sight. The ANF and Udupi Police have launched a joint search operation in the forest area to capture the absconding Naxals. Vasant, a Malekudiya tribal hailed from Kutlur village in the Kuduremukh National Park area. The 30-year-old, who was an active member of the Karnataka Vimochana Ranga in 1990s, later went underground and became active in the Naxal movement. He was a staunch follower of the Maoist ideologue Saket Rajan and a member of the Maoist’s Karavali Area Committee. Vasant’s name figured in the 2003 Idu encounter and also in the bomb attack on police party in Karkala Taluk in 2005. Earlier in May 2009, the Karnataka Police had declared an award of Rs five lakh for any information on Vasant. (ANI)
