Lalit Modi row: No need for husband's signature for operation in Portugal, claims Congress

New Delhi: The Congress party on Monday continued to agitate for External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's resignation in light of the Lalit Modi controversy, claiming that the 'excuse' given by the BJP for her actions is invalid. "The External Affairs Ministry is a sensitive division and to work with such a lack of responsibility... She has gone out of her way to provide Lalit Modi with help. She talks to a British MP and the British High Commissioner and Lalit Modi gets the requisite travel papers in 24 hours," Congress leader PL Punia told the media. "Sushma Swaraj acted on humanitarian grounds to facilitate Lalit Modi, who has been accused of laundering several hundred crores. They say it is so that Modi could visit his ailing wife in Portugal and sign papers before the operation is conducted. However, as per Portuguese law, it is not a requirement to obtain the signature of the husband for any surgical operations," he added. Swaraj on Sunday had said that she had taken a humanitarian view of Lalit Modi's case since his wife was suffering from cancer. She further said that British MP Keith Vaz had spoken to her on the same, adding she believes that giving an Indian citizen 'emergency travel documents' cannot spoil relations between India and the UK. Vaz, who is facing an inquiry in the UK over the role he played in Modi receiving his travel papers, said that he had checked with the Indian Government before taking any action and added that he had received a 'no objection' from New Delhi.

Did not help Lalit Modi to get travel documents: Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday said she never helped former IPL chief Lalit Modi in getting travel documents from the British authorities. The minister told the Rajya Sabha the she has been waiting since last two weeks to make her stand clear. "This issue about me is being raised since the last two weeks. I had informed the through the leader of the house that I am ready for discussion. Since last seven days, I am sitting here every day just so that discussion may start," she said amid ruckus in the house. "But they don't start the discussion, they just create ruckus. The facts, this notice is based on, are baseless and untrue... I never requested the British government to give travel documents to Lalit Modi," said Sushma Swaraj. With Congress members creating a ruckus, the house was adjourned till 12 noon.

Fanaa - Last major musical score of Jatin Lalit

Fanaa, upcoming flick from the house of YRF, is special not just because of great production values and the Aamir Khan-Kajol combo. It is also special as it has some of the last songs composed by the composer duo of Jatin Lalit who have now split. Jatin Lalit, who gave some great music for YRF in films like DDLJ, Mohabbatein and Hum Tum, would be taking a bow as a duo once their album 'Fanaa' hits the stand. They do have a couple of small pending releases that may happen later but for all their die hard fans, 'Fanaa' in all probability would be their last and final call. Truly an end of a great era that witnessed dozens of melodious 'n' priceless gems. Here is looking forward to 'Fanaa'!

'Maharathi' is the title for Lalitha Kalanjali's film

'Maharathi' is the title confirmed for the film directed by P Vasu of 'Chandramukhi'-fame and produced by Vakada Appa Rao on the banner of Sri Lalitha Kalanjali Productions with Balakrishna, Sneha and Meera Jasmine in the lead. Jayaprada is playing a special role in this film. A press briefing was arranged to announce the title, in which story and dialogue writer Thotapalli Madhu and producer Vakada Appa Rao present. Thotapalli Madhu says, 'We have decided to announce the title on October 15 (Sunday). The hero of the film acts as a leader and fights for the solution to the problems faced by them. In that fight, one could find the goodness, comedy, steadfastness and glamour. As the hero leads the family in getting out of the problems, we decided to give it a title as 'Maharathi'. Almost everyone gave a positive response to the title. In fact, Balakrishna is the brain behind the subject. About a year ago, he asked me to prepare a good story. We both sit together and zeroed in on a storyline. And I expanded it. Balakrishna himself selected Vakada Appa Rao as the producer and P Vasu as director. The film is a clean family entertainer and works on a wonderful screenplay. Each and every character in the film is equally important. Especially the character being played by Jayaprada is excellent and she also performed well. I too played a role in this film. Pradeep Rawat did villainy. We started the film on April 29 and completed it by October 12. The characters played by Balakrishna in this film are quite good. It is a different character and done never before by Balakrishna. We are sure that it would be a big hit.' Producer Vakada Appa Rao says, 'I and Kodi Ramakrishna together started this 'Sri Lalitha Kalanjali' banner some 22 years ago. After some gap, Balakrishna gave me a good chance to produce a film. Vasu had an experience of directing over 52 films. He knows how to extract the kind of performance from every artiste. Shekhar V Joseph's cinematography would be a highlight. Gurukiran gave the music for the film and we will release the audio of the film very soon. We are planning to release the film in the second week of November.'

Srinivasan effected $633 million loss to BCCI: Lalit Modi

New Delhi: Disgraced former IPL chairperson Lalit Modi has leveled fresh allegations against current BCCI President-in-exile N Srinivasan, accusing him of indulging in financial impropriety during the 2009 edition of cash-rich league, in effect causing a monumental loss of $633 million to BCCI. Modi, the exiled cricket administrator who is said to have orchestrated the IPL spectacle, has tweeted (with unsubstantiated documentary ‘evidence’ in tow) that Srinivasan, the BCCI Secretary in 2009, “contravened” BCCI’s Working Committee decision and brazenly flouted RBI norms to ask Cricket South Africa (CSA) open a bank account in its name, instead of opening an account in BCCI’s name. The account, Modi claims, was run “camouflaged” for BCCI by CSA, and the former used to replenish it periodically, the authority of disbursement of funds resting solely with Srinivasan. “One of the conditions under the agreement (between Srinivasan and CSA) dated 30th March, 2009 was that CSA would open and operate a dedicated bank account for conducting the tournament., as if it was a BCCI account but camoflouged as CSA account,” a document attached by Modi on his Twitter profile reads. “Further on 25th March, 2009 N.Srinivasan circulated instructions to all including IPL Chairman who was not party or attended any meeting with CSA and Secretary’s team in reference to above agreement and contravention of BCCI resolution that CSA would operate a separate bank account and makes payments on behalf of BCCI and BCCI will replenish the amount as and when required and after the tournament CSA can send final statement for settlement. The letter made it clear that the account would be monitored by BCCI and any disbursal would be made after final approval of N. Srinivasan,” the document further reads. In addition to these, Modi alleges that Srinivasan, in order to extricate personal gains, amended the mandatory bank guarantee to be furnished by the franchisees from full bid amount to just 10 percent of the amount, and blamed the India Cements owner of maligning him of favouring big players. The erstwhile cricket administrator then went on to blame Srinivasan’s “obstinate conduct” for causing the ouster of Kochi and Sahara franchisees, resulting in a cumulative loss of 633mn USD. Board’s President-in-exile has also been blamed for shady media rights’ deals for the IPL as well. While personal propriety of Srinivasan is doubtful without doubt, the fact remains that Modi’s claims, for sheer want of authenticity, remain mere allegations, something that will be grossly insufficient to trouble the defiant BCCI top boss.
