Little known facts about RD Burman

Pancham introduced the twin track effect in 'Baharon Ke Sapne', which he later used to create the mesmerizing 'Qatra Qatra Miltee Hai' [Ijaazat] and a few more songs. He also pioneered the use of electronic organ in Indian Films with the song 'O Mere Sona Re' [Teesri Manzil] RD was, as Gulzar says, as good a craftsman as a musician. In 'Chura Liya' he used the sound of a spoon hitting a glass For the 'Kitaab' song, 'Master Ji Ki Aa Gayee Chitthhi', he brought some desks from a classroom in the studio while recording and used them as a percussion In 'Abdullah' he used the sound of a bamboo whistle with a balloon tied to it for a song Once to get the sound of raindrops, he spent the whole rainy night in his house's balcony recording the sound he wanted In the song 'O Manjhi Re' from the movie 'Khushboo', RD Burman used bottles with water filled at different levels and created a hollow sound by blowing into them and this sound effect was used with the orchestra During the recording of 'Hum Dono Do Premi' [Ajnabee] the musicians were on strike. So he improvised the song with emptied-out musical interludes and just listen the song Out of his 331 released movies 292 were in Hindi, 31 in Bangla, 3 in Telugu, 2 each in Tamil & Oriya and 1 in Marathi. RD also composed for 5 TV serials in Hindi and Marathi. He also scored a large number of non-film songs in Bangla [also known as Pooja songs or modern songs], which are available in different albums. He did a song for a small documentary film called 'Maa Ki Pukar' too, in 1975. Starting independent music company in 1961 with 'Chote Nawab', he did 331 films and 4 non-film albums. Before coming onto his own, he assisted his father S.D. Burman for long. Dada Burman used Pancham's tune 'Ae meri topee palat ke aa' in 'Fantoosh'. Pancham was only 9 when he composed the tune. For Pyaasa, SD used his son's 'Sar Jo Tera Chakraye', which became a huge hit Amit Kumar, Abhijeet and Shabbir Kumar were given their first breaks by Pancham R.D. Burman made his acting debut in Mehmood's 'Bhoot Bangla'. Later in 'Pyaar Ka Mausam' toohe gave a hilarious performance as Mr. Popat Lal. R.D played the mouth organ for his friends Laxmikant Pyarelal in a song in 'Dosti' and also in a movie for Kalyanji Anandji. The mouth organ played in the song 'Hai Apna Dil To Awara' sung by Hemant Kumar in the film 'Solva Saal' is played by RD Burman himself Both Lata and Bhupinder won a National Award for the song 'Beeti Na Bitaaye Raina' from 'Parichay', and this song was composed in a hotel room in no time R.D. Burman won the Filmfare award only 3 times [Sanam Teri Kasam, Masoom, 1942-A Love Story] while being nominated 16 times for the award

Little progress in Cuba on human rights: HRW

Cuba remains the sole Latin American nation which "represses virtually all forms of political dissent," Human Rights Watch said in a report Sunday, while citing concerns over developments in Venezuela and Mexico. "Cubans who criticize the government are subject to criminal charges," the watchdog group said in its annual survey released in Cairo. "They are exempt from due process guarantees," and courts "are 'subordinated' to the executive and legislative branches, denying meaningful judicial protection." The report said the government's media monopoly ensures that "there is virtually no freedom of expression." "Limited Internet access means only a tiny fraction of Cubans can read independently published articles and blogs," HRW said. Despite the release of the remaining 12 members of the "group of 75" dissidents in 2011, the regime of President Raul Castro "continued to enforce political conformity using short-term detentions, beatings, public acts of repudiation, forced exile, and travel restrictions," the report said. The 676-page report reviews human rights practices around the globe, with summaries of conditions in more than 90 countries and territories based on probes carried out by HRW staff from 2011. While Cuba was singled out in Latin America, HRW expressed concern over others in the region, citing a deterioration of human rights in Venezuela and Mexico's crackdown on drug violence and organized crime. It cited a "weakening of Venezuela's democratic system of checks and balances under President Hugo Chavez" and said the government "has systematically undermined the right to free expression, workers' freedom of association, and the ability of human rights groups to protect rights." In Mexico, "efforts by the administration of President Felipe Calderon to combat organized crime have resulted in a significant increase in killings, torture, and other abuses by security forces, which only make the climate of lawlessness and fear worse in many parts of the country." Colombia's internal conflict "continued to result in serious abuses by irregular armed groups in 2011, including guerrillas and successor groups to paramilitaries," the report noted. It said laws passed in 2010 and 2011 in Bolivia "posed risks to the media's ability to freely criticize the government," but President Evo Morales "took some steps to address objections from media groups by amending some disputed laws." In Brazil, HRW said, some police units "engage in abusive practices with impunity, instead of pursuing sound policing practices.

Three shades are autographed by Katrina and other L’Oréal Paris ambassadors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. "My favourite is my own personal lipstick which is called L'Oréal Paris La Vie En Rose - Katrina's Extraordinaire Mat Delicate Pink. I’m always more comfortable with something a little subtle, not too loud, not too overpowering. So for me, this was just the perfect shade, and when I saw it, I fell in love with it,” said Katrina, who finds the colour pink as "classic and timeless". For the new launch, Katrina has also featured in a campaign which also has Aishwarya, Sonam and international stars Julianne Moore and Eva Longoria in the same frame. She said she was "star struck" while working with them in a video, that was even showcased at the event here. “You see so many amazing, talented and beautiful actresses who I had the privilege of shooting with. Each and every woman is so unique and that’s something which L’Oreal Paris really celebrates. "One thing I have always believed is maintaining your own personality and individuality... L’Oreal Paris really respected the individuality of all of their brand ambassadors,” said the actress, whose forthcoming film is "Fitoor". These lipsticks are infused with micro fragments of mother-of-pearl combined with velvety pigments that result in a velvet-matte textured lipstick. Raagjeet Garg, general manager, L'Oréal Paris India, added: "Pink as a colour is not only feminine and classy but also exudes confidence and has an energizing effect. With the launch of La Vie En Rose collection, we want to pay a tribute to the style and elegance that is portrayed by the modern Indian woman."
